And not having been in a few years, I can see that it is considerably smaller yet due to the number of closures at the mall. There are easily a half-dozen empty storefronts here, and the buildings themselves are definitely not being kept up, either. I do not think this mall will be around in a couple years unless management steps in and revitalizes it. Knowing all this about it, and knowing that half the mall was demolished a while ago to make way for Woodman's, I paid it a visit for the first time in my life out of boredom and random curiosity in June 2024. I was, bluntly, expecting a quick power walk through a depressing, barely-there interior that would only take a few minutes. Instead, what I got was...fine? Make no mistake about it - it is very much a dead mall, with only like 6 stores remaining, a (quite good) coffee stand, Auntie Anne's, and a Planet Fitness accounting for most of the cars in the parking lot; but it's...well-maintained? I noticed a maintenance worker squeegeeing the windows around the entrance on my way out, there was ample security, and the interior is well-lit and clean. The stores that do exist are similarly cared for, staffed by friendly faces, and honestly feel like individual trips back in time 20-30 years when Regency probably had more life to it. Throw in the fact that Spencer Gifts still has the old neon exterior and you can practically hear Tiffany playing as you walk the mostly-empty halls (or not, because the piped-in Muzak on my visit really, really liked Bon Jovi). I could keep going on about how bizarrely okay my Regency visit was, but I'll end it by saying that I feel strangely optimistic for its future. If Woodman's actually gets built, the apartments and hotel actually follow, and Microsoft actually sticks to their promise of a data center in nearby Mount Pleasant, the remnants of Regency may yet have life ahead of them as an anachronistic, enclosed strip mall surrounded by other big-box retail. The salesman was very convincing and were too young and gullible back then, but we've actually been very happy with it all this years. We've had some minor parts replaced for free. I had a pot cleaned and polished. One of the pot burnt and separated at the seam on the bottom, so I returned it, assuming they replace it, but I was told they don't warranty abuse to the units. I admit that I left the pot on the stove a little too long and burnt what I was cooking, but I can't believe that the bottom seam would just separate like that if it hasn't been weakened due to age and the constant scrubbing. The bottom burnt on one side of the pot, only. The side where the seam separated. Why didn't it burn the whole bottom of the pot, since it was centered on the stovetop, getting heat evenly on the bottom. I do not concur with the evaluation of the damage. This is supposed to be a permanent cookware and now my opinion of the product and this company just fell to the floor.

This massive mall with nearly 2M square feet of space for up to 200 retailers is always an interesting experience. The repertoire of shops here, of course, has changed over the years. Gone are shops like Sears, Borders and Circuit City. Now there's more contemporary replacements like Kohls, Hobby Lobby and Primark. While many traditional indoor malls are dying a slow, painful death, Gurnee Mills seems to be thriving at least to some extent. The food court is still quite active and the storefronts still seem largely occupied. I particularly enjoy places like 2nd & Charles, the aforementioned Primark and Five Below. The food options like Starbucks, Cinnabon and Charley's Steaks are quite good for a drink, a snack or a light meal. There are also places for the kids to play. All of this housed in a pleasant facility continues to make Gurnee Mills an enjoyable place to visit.

The one store that caught our attention was Laderach, which was a Swiss chocolate store. We were able to sample truffles and chocolate bars and it was probably the best tasting chocolate we've ever had. We also stopped in to Coach and I ended up buying my daughter a cute, Coach bag. With stores like Zara, Fabletics, Alo, Louis Vuitton and Nordstrom, you truly get a great, shopping experience at this mall; there's something here for everyone. There's also ample seating as well. Upon entering the store at approximately 4:45 PM on Monday, October 12, 2026, my friend and I noticed two white sales associates, one with blonde hair and the other with dark hair. Neither acknowledged our presence, greeted us, or offered any assistance. Instead, they simply stared at us without saying a word. Approximately a minute later, a white woman entered the store. The dark-haired sales associate walked directly past my friend, said "excuse me," and immediately approached the white woman, greeting her with a friendly "Hi, how can I help you?" before proceeding to assist her. As a Black woman, I found this behavior deeply offensive, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable. My friend and I were not even given the basic courtesy of a greeting, yet a white customer who entered after us was immediately welcomed and offered assistance. The blatant difference in treatment was impossible to ignore. After witnessing this interaction, I was so disgusted that I chose to leave the store. No customer should ever have to question whether the color of their skin determines the level of respect, acknowledgment, or customer service they receive. What I witnessed raised serious concerns about racial bias and discrimination. I sincerely hope store management and corporate leadership take this complaint seriously and address the conduct of these employees. Every customer deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. There is absolutely no excuse for selective customer service that makes customers feel unwelcome or discriminated against because of their race.
