J T.

I know Goodwill mostly through the giving end of things. For years I've dropped off loads of stuff at this marvelous receptacle of things I no longer want or need. I give things not needed; someone gets things needed. Perfect. Long ago I heard about someone who found, at a Goodwill or Salvation Army Store, a bunch of old maps of Paris in the 1800s. They were worth millions. I've always had a fantasy of finding such a treasure in plain sight (aren't they all). Saturday I decided to check out the retail end of the business to you know, see if I could find my maps. No maps on this trip, but I was blown away by the efficiency of the system going on in there. Well lit, well organized and easy to use. And the prices - holy shit! $11 bucks for a suit??? I wasn't shopping for a suit, but someone is - someone who has that big interview where sharkskin could make THE difference. Housewares, clothes, electronics, toys, sundries, etc. It's all there including...old albums, CDs and DVDs - oh yeah and VCRs :-). I poured over the albums: Herb Alpert, Berl Ives (Little Bitty Tear) - Oh dude that brings back the memories, Helen Reddy (Greatest Hit - I Am Woman, 1971) - the more things change the more they stay the same. In the end, I scored several DVDs including John Waters Hairspray for $2.99 baybee - that's right...$2.99. It doesn't matter if you're involved in the giving or getting end of Goodwill. Just get involved. As I left, I thought about those maps. It would be like winning the lottery, except you wouldn't be winning from the State, you'd be winning from an organization that does a lot of good in the world. I'm guessing it would be pretty hard to cash that check. I said it would be difficult...not impossible ;-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3yKMWaaD9o

I showed up today after a very long drive already in a mediocre mood. I went up to the front desk to ask about a Facebook Marketplace agreement I had made for a sofa set and the price, only to find out there had been some miscommunication. At first I honestly thought I might have been scammed, which instantly put me in a terrible mood. I definitely huffed around and complained about how far I had driven while trying to sort it out. Long story short...the Facebook Marketplace dealer was not a scam at all. We had simply misunderstood which pieces we were talking about. Fast forward to the end of the visit: three employees (two gentlemen and a woman / I'm sad I didn't get their names) helped me load everything and went the extra mile in every way. They were incredibly kind to me... even after my less-than-great attitude earlier. I tipped them and apologized for being grumpy, but I have to say I left there genuinely believing in people again. They handled the situation with so much patience and kindness. Very cool experience. I'll absolutely be back (with a better attitude!) and I'll be paying that kindness forward. Thank you to those three employees....even helped load my trailer. Seriously nice. Like....extra! Thank yoU!

Prices felt reasonable and fair; I never felt like I was getting taken. The staff were helpful and friendly when I asked questions. It's one of my favorite spots to spend a couple hours digging through things and discovering something new every visit.

We now check it out on a regular basis and always find some unique items. Prices are excellent, especially when compared to other vintage shops. The true treasure of the sho are the people that run it. They are so delightful and always make you feel welcome. Many times they have helped add to a collection by offering suggestions and remembering us when we came in. Though we don't always buy something we always learn something. Their knowledge and helpfulness is fantastic. I appreciate all the unique serving pieces and kitchen things available. My husband loves the record collection. Give this place a try... Parking can be utilized on either side of the building. You will have to look for it the first time but it is easy if you look for the grey building next to Liter House.
