We wanted to take a scenic drive but it was mostly closed so we took a detour to get to this store. It is such a cute little shop. They sell some michigan made items. I went to the back and they had pies, cookies, and chocolate croissants. The pie slices of the day were rhubarb and strawberry. I usually only like apple but I didnt want to buy an entire pie. I decided to get the chocolate peanut butter cookie with sea salt and it was delicious. I also got a chocolate crossiant and took it back to the hotel to warm up. It was really delicious warmed up. I absolutely loved it. Perfectly flakey and tasty. I also had a small cinnamon donut too. Overall, the shop is super cute and in a secluded area. read more

We loved this store! We each got one of the warm ciabatta sandwiches - The Soprano, The Mama Cass, and The Local - and they were all the perfect midday pick me up before driving through the Tunnel of Trees. We also got a dinner size chicken pot pie and a mini beef pot pie to heat up at the Airbnb and oh my goodness was that an excellent choice. Delicious. Also, do NOT miss out on their fresh cookies. Crazy good. We took a bunch of those to go as well. The souvenirs and other odds and ends are a nice selection, but honestly I would come just for the homemade goods and the super friendly people. When you find yourself aimlessly road tripping through rural areas that you previously did not know existed, places like this general store are exactly the kind of thing that you love to see. It's got snacks and drinks and a variety of souvenirs and locally made goods, and it's got a restroom. All very important things that you really need when you're out in what seems a bit like the middle of nowhere. Additionally I believe that they have some hot food, (which I didn't try), but if you need that then they've got you covered. Overall a great place to stop and take in a bit of the local vibe and get yourself a souvenir or something to snack on as you continue your trip. An old historic building along a picturesque drive with friendly people...if you see it, you pretty much have to stop so go ahead and do that. You'll be glad that you did. read more

A drive through northern Michigan's Tunnel of Trees on M119 is not complete without a stop at Good Hart General Store. Leaf-peepers arrive by the bus loads in the fall, so expect a wait to check out. We always pick up their world famous frozen pot pies to take home, and the chocolate chip peanut butter and sea salt cookies are favorites. The store has a variety of pies, cookies, soups, deli sandwiches and sides. All sorts of Michigan books and souvenirs are available. There is a post office in the store too! While researching things to do outside of the tunnel of trees, this place came up and it peaked my interest. After checking out some of the reviews, I figured I'd add it to my list of places to visit if we had time and it was easy to locate. This general stores almost at the end of the tunnel. It's obvious from the road, and partly due to the amount of people that stop in to hang out, shop or listen to music like we did. After the drive through the tunnel, it was nice to get out, stretch our legs and listen to some soft music and shop to enjoy ourselves. The store itself is small but extremely cute. They sell items such as T-shirts, magnets, candy, and a few other souvenir type items that we checked out while inside. There were also two hound dogs on duty that we fell in love with while visiting. Outside, there were vendors selling small ticket items like honey, jewelry and a fwe other things but we didn't buy anything since we really didn't see anything we liked. I think this place sells food too, but not when we were there. It appeared to have a kitchen in the back of some sort, but we weren't hungry so it didn't phase us. Place is cute, and while it's priced accordingly for being out in the middle of nowhere, stop in and throw some cash at them and enjoy yourself! read more

I don't know if I come to Tunnel of Trees for this store or the other way around but you won't miss this stop because EVERYONE will be stopped here so you'll slow down just to see what's going on, lol! Skip all donuts before here and buy what's under the glass on the counter: like a cinnamon sugar donut/cake/cronut rolled into one. (Do you have a dog in the car? Cookies right next to that! Got your who,e fam covered) We stopped, of course, for the pot pies and took two home. (You can get them frozen from the guys in the back.. we bring a cooler for this purpose) And of course, a piece of berry !!! (Should've gotten more) There's a also a wonderful, cute and tempting store, post office, etc and a bakery case with cookies, brownies and such. (That is NOT self serve and says so but it was hanging wide open so the people in front of me did it anyway... and were chided at the register, lol... ) I also tried the pumpkin soup this time and it was instant LOVE so take a good look around in the back... This is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, which is half of its appeal. The proprietor has clearly been thoughtful in determining what to offer its visitors--from eats that are ready to go (the apple bacon squash soup on this chilly day in October was sublime!) to packaged food/drinks and gifts, many of which are nicely non-souvenirish. Sadly, the original building has been replaced, and I momentarily panicked when told the restrooms were "out back" behind the building. However, even though they were Port-a-Pottys, they are the modern, much more tolerable structures (aka clean). Maggie the dog is a precious surprise co-host in the building. The fall colors were at peak when we visited, and this stop is glorious for photo ops (including the old cabin across the road). Staff is warm and helpful. read more

An update to my review last year -- Good Hart General Store no longer is serving fresh sandwiches & ice cream, but they are making up for in other ways with their delicious pastries in the morning or pot pies (chicken or beef) to go! We always look forward to coming up north and staying nearby to the General Store. It has the essentials, but also sells fresh baked pastries & sweets that seem to be popular in the morning. We stopped in right after they opened and were lucky enough to try a chocolate croissant and cinnamon twist, both still warm. The store also sells other local goods like candles, gifts, apparel, drinks, and many other finds. Some days, you'll even find Maggie, their resident dog, hanging around the property looking for food from friendly people! read more

Full disclosure: I pulled into Good Hart full of bad sentiments, my stony heart convulsed with rage thanks to a scenic drive gone to hell. Add one flat tire, a cranky baby, and the skies opening up for a storm to my list of woes when my car cut out. My dream of showing my mother the fabled Tunnel of Trees was at a soggy nadir when we barely rolled into the parking lot of Good Hart General Store this past September. Was I at my best? Hell no. This charming store sits off M-119, beckoning to visitors with a fairly broad parking lot. The site lurches high above Lake MIchigan, a screen of pine trees and stately oaks lending their shade over the view and the picnic site. On any other day, what a glorious place to sit with a sandwich. Hop up to a bench and enjoy nature at its finest in Northern Michigan. Do not, as I did, stamp around crushing acorns under your feet and glaring jealously at all the other functioning vehicles who did not get a flawed engineering design that sucked up water from puddles into the cold air intake. Admire the berth wide enough for a towing flatbed to pull up while people still have room to walk around! There are pleasant trails behind the General Store that are best lightly trod down, not stamped along cursing every word you have for rain. As a Pacific Northwesterner of British descent, I have about 49, and another 22 from other languages. Take the opportunity to swing down to the beach. The owners delight in offering directions along with sympathetic looks! I did not get to claim a Petoskey stone from their lovely pebble beach because I hurled candidates instead into the foaming water. Whoops. The various lovely ornaments inside the store split between little necessities and definite goodies. My husband came out with a box of candied orange slices. You've seen their poor cousins in many a country store or a candy shop, usually stale and hard underneath a thick crystallized layer of sugar. These are the kingly treats that smell heavily of blessed citrus, and are soft and chewy in ways I've never imagined before. Even with my mouth twisted up ready to cry for how badly my holiday turned out, the candies were abominably good. What mischief was this? The sort of thing that kept three stressed, frazzled adults entertained for many miles between Petoskey and Detroit, that's what. Super-friendly staff at the general store made my husband and baby's day much better, since they were sweet enough to provide hot water and a few towelettes after the little one decided to go and add a cold to our list of miseries. Their pastries were top-notch and fairly priced, filling my mom up while we waited on a cab to come from the far side of Pellston to get us back to our hotel. They went the extra mile to do nice turns, and I'm determined to return and give this place the proper review it deserves. read more

Without a doubt, the Good Hart General Store gets a glowing 5 star rating from me. I will admit, this place evokes nostalgia of my childhood, where I spent part of my summers in Northern Michigan, where the simple pleasures in life reign supreme. It is a quaint building and a family run business offering convenience items, baked goods, a deli, and even a post office. Anyone spending time in Northern Michigan simply must come here to get some of their baked goods. The blueberry pies here are worthy of gold medals. I only wish the store still sold "It's Gooder in Good Hart" t-shirts. A stone's throw away is the Good Hart Beach, which offers a beautiful, quiet, nature-filled place to soak up the sun and be soothed by the sound of the surf. One of the great pleasures of living in Northern Michigan is the opportunity to frequent some really outstanding family businesses. One of the best up here is the Good Hart General Store. Originally built in 1934, the little red store serves as a grocery, deli, bakery and post office. The pot pies are a thing of beauty as are all of the baked goods. Located on the famous "tunnel of trees", the store is an ideal place to stop as you cruise M119. In addition to great food they offer made in Michigan products and there's usually a dog to pet. We came through the tunnel of trees this weekend and we made it a point to stop at the good hart general store. They had some nice products to purchase. We really enjoyed the cookies, even though they might be considered a little pricey they are so worth it! The only downfall was it was kind of cramped in space when there are a lot people in the building but you can overlook that when your there. Also, expect to wait in line when it's busy because they only have one register and the guy behind the counter had to go back and forth to get pot pies for customers at times. However, if you build a little extra time in knowing this, you will not be disappointed in finding a unique place to stop and take some goodies home with you. read more

We stopped in for a sandwich with two very hungry children. We were greeted by a very friendly gentleman (one of the owners) who talked to us about Ann Arbor (because of our U of M card). We went outside to eat and sat in a clean, comfortable sitting area with the sweetest dogs hanging about. One is the owners came over and sat with his for a chat. Random stop on a rainy August morning. We left Mackinaw a City in the morning heading for Petoskey via the scenic route. It was 10:30am, so we thought we'd get a snack. I'm a good baker, but appreciate fabulous bakery. A summer and winter favorite nestled in the beautiful "Tunnel of Trees" along Lake Michigan's shoreline.
