I walked into Good Foods because I was in the South Shore area for the day and google said this was a popular vegan spot nearby. I went in and couldn't decide between the veggie burger or the mushroom philly. The woman recommended the veggie burger since it was my first time eating there, and it was the BEST veggie burger I've ever had. Shh....I've got a secret. Once again, my friends held out on me. My friend keeps talking about these tamales. She won't let her husband come home with out picking up these tamales..... So, I finally make it. The owner is very hands on. If you have dietary restrictions, let her know. They have entrées with sides(somewhat cafeteria style), sandwiches, salads, fresh juices, smoothies and desserts. The tamales are pretty tasty, but I prefer the tamale pie. I have ordered a plate which can consist of a protein(beans, tofu), starch(rice, potatoes) and seasonal vegetables. Overall, the food is nicely seasoned and filling. The entrées rotate, while some foods(like the tamales) are staples. I also enjoyed the lemon and blueberry pies on my last visit. A little on the sweet side but delicious. She had gluten free cake which was also good. During my last visit, I had a kale salad which was made with kale, zucchini, raisins and a nut dressing. It was a little on the spicy side. I also had the enchilada which was filled with veggie meat and rice and covered with a nut cheese. She has some other raw selections like the strawberry, coconut, sweet potato desserts. read more

Vegetarian, vegan or not, if you are looking for one of the hidden jewels in Chicago, this little restaurant off the beaten path is not to be missed. Was looking for a vegetarian restaurant near the Museum of Science and Industry to take my out of town relatives (some of whom are vegetarian). Drove to Majani but was closed for holidays so found this spot on yelp. From the outside, all the other storefronts on the block look closed so it would be hard to find if you weren't looking specifically for this place. It was AMAZING!! The owner and her two daughters were doing all the cooking. They have hot and raw food options. They had a deli-style option of cooked foods where you choose one entree and 3 sides. The entrees have meat alternatives that look and have texture of real meat. Delicious! The veggies were also tremendous. We all remarked how the seasoning on the various vegetable dishes made each taste unique. And the portion sizes were the biggest I've ever seen in a restaurant. And a "johnny cake" (pan fried cornmeal pancake) was included on the side. The Mac and cheese (cheese made from almonds so that it is vegan-friendly) was a dish I had to try out of curiosity -- I like it better than the "real thing" as it is light yet creamy and tasty. There is a menu for ordering food other than the deli options. Two in our group ordered the veggie burgers and they raved about it! Those accolades coming from a vegetarian who had eaten many a veggie burger meant something special. I would not hesitate to bring any meat lover to this place. I'm confident they would be amazed that the "meat" is not real but that the flavoring on the dishes are better than other restaurants! The ambience of this restaurant is so charming. The owners are all about health. The posters and pictures on the walls, the shows on TV playing are all about health and wellness. And the warm and friendly vibe is so welcoming. I don't usually eat sandwiches because I want to avoid wheat. However, Good Foods offered gluten-free bread. I ordered the avocado sandwich with gluten-free bread. Since they were out of GF bread, the owner, Camilla Alfred, offered me sprouted bread instead. I agreed, knowing that sprouting kills the lectins in gluten. (Most places don't offer sprouted bread.) Since I could have sprouts or spinach, I opted for sprouts. That day the sprouts were combined with large sunflower sprouts. While I waited at a table, I conversed with Alfred's mom about vegetarianism on Chicago's South Side. Originally, the store was located farther west, but Alfred moved to the present location 10 years ago. Although people in the neighborhood have known about Good Foods for years, I only recently heard about this "hidden jewel." Alfred followed in the footsteps of naturopathic doctor Alvina Fulton, who used to have a shop on Damen; she practices naturopathy next door at the Sky Alternative. When she brought my sandwich, wow! It was jampacked with onions, zucchini, bell pepper, the greens/sprouts combination, vegan cheese and a sauce to die for. I had to cut it in half to pick it up. When I bit the toasted sandwich, the bottom bread cover dropped away. So I held the greens as cover and chewed heartily. Then I picked up the pieces that broke off, and the sauce dripped on my hand. I love their food and location not to far from where I live. It is more then expected, cooked well, tasty, and have a lot of options to choose from entrees, desserts, cleaning drinks, and products on the shelf. They may take long to make an eggplant vegetable sandwich, but I'm patient and love to get other foods like desserts that are just as sweet and healthier. I would recommend to order out and enjoy the food, I haven't tried some other foods like veggie lasagna or pasta or veggie beans salad, but they all are probably great. Fortunately there was a customer in front of me and that gave me time to look around. I'm glad I did because I ended up staying The Sister at the register was kind, patient, and very welcoming as I was a first timer at the restaurant! While waiting, I tried two of Dr. Camilla's tonics, learned about the other products in store, and had a sample of the African King smoothie. I ended up buying one of the tonics and that smoothie will be the first one I get when I go back because I will certainly be back. After being greeted warmly and walked through the options, I was fixed two giant dinner plates and a slice of peach cobbler to go, all for under $30. The mac and cheese was GOOD, the steak and peppers over mashed potatoes was amazing, greens were good, and my non-vegetarian friend would not believe me that the meatballs in the spaghetti weren't beef. The talk in the cafe indicates they're building a naturopathic dynasty on 73rd, too, with a garden and health clinic. The rolls are good and they did a good job trying to accommodate me for being a vegetarian. However they are a bit pricey and my miso soup was brought to me cold as they had forgotten to turn on the burner. I wish them well, but I was a little disappointed. I may go back and revise the review later though since they are just around the corner from me and I did enjoy the food that was the appropriate temperature. read more
