Columbia River Fishing Guides - My big Sturgeon catch! The look on the guides face is the best....

Amazing day on the river! Let me start off by saying that this was my families first guided fishing…read moretrip and wasn't sure at all what to expect. The plan was to do Salmon fishing but we were told earlier in the day the reports weren't good and there wasn't much activity in the area we were going. We all discussed our expectations which was that there was no guarantee we would catch anything. Sad but true fishing is not guaranteed or it would be called "catching" instead according to a family member. We were told the following to be prepared: layer clothing as it was cold that day but could warm up, pack snacks/lunch as it's not provided, sunscreen may be needed, and a hat for some of us. Also, goes without saying to have license and fishing licenses. Some of these items should be obvious but others not so much. A friend suggested we bring tip money as well. We had no expectations having never been on a trip such as this. We headed out of the marina with excitement in hopes as all of us probably hope of landing a big fish. Initially the spot we hit up north trolling for Salmon was a bust. But, our guide Christian made a call to get a report on a spot that had hits on Sturgeon instead. He let us know he couldn't guarantee anything but sounds like it might be a good place if we were up for it. Of course, we said let's do it. At this point even without a bite, for someone who works too much it was already a great day on the water, and no motion sickness which was huge. We headed towards Goat Island and he dropped anchor, got the first pole in the water, and as he was getting the second one in there was a hit right away on the line. Having little experience with Sturgeon fishing Christian was a great teacher explaining how, when, and in what order to do things. The first Sturgeon my husband caught was 2-3' but huge smile on his face none the less. Not long after getting all the poles on another bite came on the line, and my daughter got a decent sized sturgeon on the line, and learned how tiring they can be to land. Christian got it on the boat for a photo and we released it back into the water. We all ended up catching several Sturgeons and I ended up catching a large one that was between 6-7' and estimated to weigh 150 lbs. This one we were all nervous to get on the boat but Christian managed it somehow. He advised in a laughing tone any other larger one's would not be on the boat. We ended the evening with all of us having caught multiple sturgeons, smiles on our face, excitement, and looking forward to the next excursion. Even me whose body doesn't do well on the water. I will absolutely suggest him to friends, family, colleagues, and strangers. All around amazing experience and still smiling days later. Coming in from the day I snapped a photo of our guide looking completely as home on the boat and my experience was he was just that. He gave us an amazing afternoon/evening.

Owner is one of the most unpleasant people I have ever spoken to on the phone. I work retail and know for a fact agd I talked to any of my customers like that I would have been fired on the spot! Here, the river splits around a small island that is rumored to be a good spot for salmon fishing in the springtime. The water runs slower on the park side than in many places along the Lewis river, making it a nice place for swimming if you can snag a piece of the pebbly beach. The great news is that the park is rarely busy and we often find an area we can swim and play for the day. Beyond picnic tables, grills, and grassy areas, there is also a public toilet, and garbage cans throughout. Dogs are permitted on leash, but there is no doggy clean up station - you'll need to bring your own bags. If you're a mosquito magnet like me, you'll want to bring your bug spray. They're everywhere and they are thirsty! Logs have been intentionally placed along the riverbank to create areas for fish. We've seen minnows, snails, and caddisfly larva in the shallows. Fish jumping and even river otter can be seen in the deeper channel in the middle of the river. The park is well maintained and off the beaten path. There are two roads you can turn off of Cedar Creek to get to Haapa . They are Etna rd and Roser rd. Turning right onto Etna is an extremely sharp turn. A minivan can't do it without entering oncoming traffic after the turn. Conversely, taking a left onto Roser is extremely sharp. If you're hauling a boat, plan to enter from one direction and leave from the other for smoother traveling.

However, we had the opportunity to catch and keep sturgeon only if it was between 44-50 inches; which occurs twice in a year. From beginning to start, Matt was super helpful with providing gear for me as it was my first time fishing. His boat was top of the line compared to the rest on the river that day. It had a hot water sink and very comfy chairs to sit in. He also had beers, waters on dec and had anti-nausea meds on board which was great for me since I was feeling sick. After 5 minutes, my boyfriend caught his first sturgeon that was 47 inches. And I caught one four hours later that was 45 inches. He allowed us to reel it in (which was a struggle for me, but worth it) and he took great photos after. We were the only 2 people that day to catch and keep our sturgeon. We couldn't have had a better experience and we got so lucky that day thanks to Matt! He ended up filet-ing our sturgeons and took 15 pounds of it home. It was the highlight of our trip to Portland. And we plan to come back in the spring once salmon season starts. If you're thinking about booking a trip with him, DO IT. You won't regret it!
