I would give it 0 stars if allowed. I found a roach in one of the chantilly cream pastries (see photos). Service wasn't exactly 5-star worthy, but the line moved efficiently and the guy answered my questions. The total approximate price that I recall was 3,60€ for 4 pastries (a great deal!) paid in cash but I saw other customers before me paying by credit card.
I visited this place after it was highly praised for its pastries (esp the canelas and pico de chocolate) by the local and native tour guide. My friend enjoyed the 2 mentioned above, but I decided to go with the 2 chantilly pastries available.
Locating the bakery was not easy at night as I was in the quiet area alone around 9:45pm and there was no sign advertising the business. The bakery was very dimly lit as if off and windows were textured so it was impossible to see beyond. The only confirmation it was the bakery was the homeless guy across the street noticing my confusion and informing that it opens at 10pm. I came back shortly after since it was recommended and my last night in the island. Proof that the bakery was a local mainstay showed people were serviced right after their 10pm opening ordering several goods and a few already lined up to order. I left the bakery with the bags tied tightly so there was no way the pest got in until I was ready to eat.
As the photos show, the insect seemed intact but it looks dry and not so much freshly smushed. Thank goodness I waited until I was at the hotel in bright lighting to see this instead of eating in the dark night walking back to my hotel. Who knows how much of a wing or leg I ate before noticing the body!! I would go back to complain but it was too late and I was on my way to Terceira. I guess the only comfort is knowing insects are a delicacy in certain parts of the world and no one died from eating it, let alone a speck that might have been eaten by me. It's just so gross and embarrassing knowing I almost finished the pastry before seeing what you see in the picture and I'm not one to have an adventurous palette. read more
