I ordered a pizza this time and the pepperoni was actually their local sausage which tasted a lot better. I also liked the fact that it had cheese in the crust. I have been here in 2018 and we loved it because they were open later after dinner for an espresso and dessert. When I came back in 2025 I was excited for that. Hours completely changed. They only open 11am-7pm I believe. However the food and drinks were amazing! An extensive menu now that they didn't have back then I think. Can get very busy and tricky to get a table if you have more than 4-5 people for an outside table. We all loved the food and were reasonably priced. Service was good. We had to check in with our waiter but they had many tables they were taking care of and enjoyed the slower Azores style meals. Always recommend to people in the city. read more

It was quiet around town center around 6. Everyone must have been siestaing. Luckily cafe central was open. It had open, outdoor seating adjacent to a beautiful mid century church with chiming bells. This local was a 2.5 at best. The meal was ok, the food was fine for the price and quantity but the flavor was too salty and too much protein. It feels wrong to out 2 sausages, 1 spoonful of beans, and bacon and eggs on the same plate. The coffee was perfect. The service was also poor, but we found this was the case in many restaurants (slow dinning) and you don't get the check unless you ask for it. If sitting at a cafe and people watching is your thing, then, this might just be the best place on the island because of the amount of foot traffic at Praca de Goncalo Velho (where the city gates are located). I had a great presunto sandwich rustica with delicious ham, Sao Jorge cheese, and a tapenade of black olives on a very good roll. And I will say this with great pride, I ate about 2 dozen lapas grehadas cooked in butter and with a squeeze of lemon on top as they were still piping hot! This place was centrally located and right across Portas da Cidade. We had a really good cheese sandwich with honey and walnuts. I definitely look forward to trying to recreate that at home. Kept it simple at Cafe Central by ordering cappuccinos and a Portuguese egg tart pastry called pastel de nata, which were named by The Guardian as the 15th most tasty delicacy in the world. And I got to have my very first one here! Some history for ya: these pastries were created when monks in Lisbon used large quantities of egg-whites for starching clothes, and they started selling pastéis de nata at a nearby sugar refinery to bring in some revenue when they had leftover egg yolks. And here we are 200 years later, enjoying some fluffy, creamy, cinnamony ones while sitting across a church. The service was quick and standard, and the cappuccino was hot and smooth, although already sweetened. It was fine for me, but too sweet for my friend. Went great with the pastry. They, of course, have a lot of other options as well, both for desserts, entrees, and beverages. Great cafe with outdoor seating in the middle of downtown that is great for a break during your sightseeing. Keep an eye out for the waiter with the eyes! read more

The Yelp example text for a review almost fits this place to a T. It doesn't look like much when you walk by despite the ample selection of outdoor tables, and indoors isn't much more impressive. The pastry case and whatnot was actually kinda sad looking. The menu is a two page (one page front and back) affair, not much, but the regional breakfast for EUR 9 (or was it EUR 7.50) is a substantial portion and is quite delicious. Well worth it. And sitting outside on a sunny morning, despite it being tourist central, well, something about the vibe was just right, even if the atmosphere initially seemed a little more modest than expected. Surprises me to say it but would come back, especially if you need a bit of a break from walking around the rest of Ponta Delgada. read more

Stopped here a few times during our week-long visit and was happy and satisfied every time! This place is perfectly located in the middle of "downtown" right next to the Portas da Cidade and the Igreja da Matriz. LOVED the regional breakfast option (got that several mornings!) and was easily sharable. Also got the natura option once and it was really good as well. The service was spotty, but okay for the most part. All in all, an absolute must for any time of day, for a full meal or just a cafe and some great people watching. Please note: Because this is in a very touristy area, there are a lot of panhandlers and gypsies asking for money and/or selling things (aggressively). Definitely tourist central, but then I'm a tourist so no problem if the food is good, the beer cold, the wine pour generous and the service at least ok. So let's check all the boxes here. The weather was between drizzling and rain but we managed to cop a table under the awning. Fish soup was on my "gotta have while in Ponta Delgado" list so my partner and I both ordered it along with some bread, wine and beer. My take is that if Boston fish chowda has a lineage, this is it. A non dairy (my preference), well seasoned broth with rice as the carb and plenty of chunky fish. Plus no Red Sox fans with funky accents to ruin the vibe. The place sits under the clock tower and we had the pleasure of hearing it chime two consecutive hours as we enjoyed people watching and shelter from the storm. read more

We were docked in Ponta Delgada on a cruise ship, and my friends and I had spent a couple hours walking around the island. We were on our way back to the ship, but wanted to grab some lunch first, and we stumbled upon Cafe Central. It ended up being quite the pleasant surprise! The outdoor patio was plenty big and offered views of the historic church next door, as well as the water. There was a menu available in English- another plus! The menu was pretty extensive- a nice selection of breakfast items, as well as sandwiches, and even crepes. Everything was reasonably priced- a sandwich, with fries or chips only set you back about 5 euro. Additionally they had a wide range of beverage options- coffee (including coffees that were practically milkshakes), smoothies, and alcohol. We finished off our lunch with a traditional Portuguese custard tart as well as the local pastry (which I cant remember the name of now). Both were delicious. If you don't have the time to sit down for lunch, just pop inside and order any number of sweet or savory treats from their bakery display case. Very centrally located, as the name suggests, this cafe is in the same square as the gates to the city. There is plenty of seating, most of it outside and it was very busy. My friend had the penne pasta and we learned that bacon was the secret ingredient. I had a yummy brownie with pineapple mint sorbet. We had a "local board" and I had the mushroom bacon pasta, which was phenomenal - the best thing I've eaten on São Miguel, even if the blood sausage was about at the limit of my adventurousness. This was our first stop upon arriving in Ponta Delgada. This cafe has a truly island feel - lots of colorful dishes and smoothies. The food is definitely satisfactory, though not stellar. My spinach quiche arrived cold and my brie/walnut/honey toast was a bit dry. There aren't a lot of options in Ponta Delgada (the hours vary widely and the menu options can be limited), but this cafe does offer numerous options and very good service. This is a great cafe with a wide variety of offerings conveniently located in central Ponta Delgada. When my flight arrived at 7AM, my group and I decided to grab something to eat at this restaurant. We had coffee and the cheese and meat board to share. The cappuccino was good, but was already sweetened upon arriving to the table. The cheese board was delicious and has a variety, including the blood sausage (served at many restaurants on the island. Fresh orange juice was squeezed while we were waiting for our food, although we did not try this during our visit. Overall, this was a convenient, inexpensive, and tasty location to have breakfast. Went in for brunch early Friday afternoon and really wish we had not. We sat down and after some time a server approached and left a menu. They were busy so we understood a bit of wait time, and eventually she did return to take our order. We wanted to order one of the breakfasts and asked to replace the turkey ham on the bagel with salmon and she said no. When we pointed out that they have the exact same bagel with salmon on the menu and if we could just replace it she said sure fine and walked away. Never asked if we wanted anything else or anything to drink. But we were trying to be understand so we stuck around. After ordering we decided to check out the pastries in front, and the girl at the counter was immediately rude. We simply asked what the pastries were since they were not labeled, and she said no you have to get a table (which we already had). So we tried to get the attention of our server to ask, and she literally looked at us and then turned around completely ignoring us with no acknowledgement. At that point we just got up and left.
