downstairs fitness equipment
Zoey Z.

The gym itself is quite clean for a fitness facility, with loads of equipment. This Golds location was converted from an auto body shop, and you can still see the remnants of that in the infrastructure, which honestly I don't mind. It gives the place some personality. For example, in the studio room, the glass windows, show what used to be garage for the former auto body shop. The gym is also quite spacious with two levels. The ground level has three studio rooms, one with turf, all of the cardio equipment, as well as some machines, whereas the underground level has all of the plated machines and squat racks. Overall, a nice gym with every type of workout machine, located just a block from the bustling ballston urban area that has lots of shops/restaurants and the metro.

Like another reviewer said, my biggest complaints here stem from other members - particularly people who don't wipe down equipment after use or who drop weights. Cons: They don't have much in the way of cleaning equipment in the room where most classes are held - they also need more mats there; Cleaning staff work hard but there are not enough of them. Locker rooms can get a little dirty. Also, some of the showers have been leaking water for months. I come here a lot for the classes and wish there were more variation in the schedule. Like, Body Pump morning class is always at 6 am. Given that I bike to the gym, I need to leave at 5:20 a.m. and its just a little too early. Wish they would shake up the schedule. Sauna rules say "shower before use" but clearly people aren't doing that. Either change the rules or enforce them. People who sit in the sauna in their sweaty clothes using their cell phone on speaker should be tossed right out the door. Some of the cardio equipment seems to be broken - particularly the Jacobs Ladder and the bikes. Finally, I see a lot of reviewers complaining about the lot towing. I'd like to see better bike racks. They often get full (esp with scooters) and there is no protection around the rack so if one honking F150 pulls into the spot, all of the walkers and cyclists have to slide by. Frankly, I'd be happier with a lot where you pay a minimal fee and are allowed to leave it afterwards. We are living in a climate-apocalypse. Large surface lots that assume one-destination driving (TO A GYM) do not seem like the way of the future. Pros: Appreciate that they have a lot of classes, a sauna, and a lot of weights and machines, and that the location is close to a lot of other things and public transportation.

Gym Rat! -a noun (def.): Someone who spends too much of their leisure time in a gym working out, obsessive compulsive over not missing a day or hangs out at the gym for hours to no end...for no reason! I remember the first time I ever set foot in a gym. I was 15, a day removed from getting cut from HS football team tryouts. So to get back at all the naysayers....I got a gym membership and had planned on getting "big and strong" for tryouts the next year! The problem was...I didn't know where to start or what I was doing! I haphazardly wandered from machine to machine, doing a set of this, 10 reps of that...and then I tried to do the ONE exercise I thought I knew: The Chest Bench Press! After loading up more weight on the bar than my total weight, my spaghetti arms shakily removed the weight from the safety rack, and it immediately fell directly on my chest. Panicking because I could not lift it back up, I slowly rolled my body to the left, and watched as the weights spiraled off the end of the bar....then the same to the right of me...LOL BOOM! POWW! KLINGA-LING ling linng!! The weights hit the ground and sounded like a round of gunshots. I was so embarrassed. I quickly raised the bar to the safety rack, and hoped no one noticed...until I saw about half of the gym goers -- 30+ pairs of eyes and people staring at me! LOL That was Day 1!.......I will never forget it. Since then...Countless hours have been dedicated to bettering my health and the gym has become a religion....."health-conscious relationship & way of life" for me. Although, I don't personally think I'm a Gym Rat....many who know me say otherwise! LOL. So, I thought this week I would give an opinion on Gold's Gym in Ballston (Arlington), VA......from an "In Denial" Gym Rat's retrospective! For starters.......this place is huge and probably one of the biggest Golds's gym in the entire DC area. I fell in love with this gym as soon as I walked through the doors! It is huge (did I say that already!? lol).....semi-clean, and a fitness fanatics dream. It has every piece of equipment under the sun. In addition, there are free weights and lifting machines for days!! I felt like a kid in a candy store. The gym is split on two-levels and the floor plan is about the size of a football field, in comparison. There are loads of fitness/cardio equipment, a spin cycle studio and yoga/pilates studio to complete just about any fitness interest and goals. Most importantly.....is MY PLAYGROUND/SANDBOX.....the free weights section! There is enough weight equipment to work every muscle known to man and beast alive! A few honorable mentions include bootcamp-style classes, kick-boxing, and Zumba....in which I humbly made the mistake for a "Crumpin' class"...so I politely exited out before being embarrassed. So as you can see there is something for everybody at this Gold's Gym location to keep you motivated and get you moving. To sum it all up: CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great staff. Very friendly and helpful people. You should feel right at home with most of the staff. VIBE: Non-intimidating. Beginners, Novice, Bodybuilders and Advanced Fitness Enthusiast...will all fit into this utopian environment. LOCKERS/SHOWERS: In all honesty, it is so-so. This is where ALL gyms fail!....imho. It can wreak sometimes for sure...of *lets not go there*! But in all, I could not find any fault or anything bad with this gym. It has everything one would need and there's plenty of equipment/classes to motivate and variate (change up) your workouts; if you find your routine getting monotonous. With so many amenities within this gym....What more do you need!? So, if you read this review this far......Get your butt up off the couch and sign up for this place immediately....you won't regret it. You can find yourself in this place for hours....coming from a "In-Denial" Gym Rat!

6:15 PM on July 2 (Tuesday) parking lot is packed so using apt gym it is. Soo annoying how it's always packed around this time.

Is there free parking when I come here?

Yes, there is street parking and a parking lot for the gym. But, be careful not to park on the side of the parking lot where there is an &pizza and bike shop.....YOU WILL BE TOWED!

Over the holidays I tried a hot pilates class with friends, so I started giving a few studios a try. Initially, when I saw Mind the Mat offered a HAWT Pilates for Beginners, I was ESTATIC. However upon further review of the HAWT Pilates class offering, the description said the class wasn't really for beginners. So sadly I opted not to enroll in any classes BUT THEN(!!) MTM had the awesome idea to offer a beginner version and I enrolled immediately (at least I think it's fairly new)! When I arrived at the studio there were multiple classes going on and the "lobby" area was full of classgoers coming and going into various classes. The beginner instructor, Erika, called for all newbies to head over to the studio where class was offered - which was great because there was no front desk staff. Once in the room you were immediately embraced with the muggy temperature that hot classes are known for. I put my items into a free cubby and started setting up. This class was completely full so we were all comfortably close. Erika came around and checked us in as we started setting up so that class could begin on time. The class itself was AMAZING. Although lots of classes sometimes say they are beginner friendly, it can be hard to learn the fundamentals. What I loved about beginner HAWT pilates is it really walked up through the different movements and taught us how to breathe correctly and what it means to scoop your belly. I can say with certainty I was doing it all wrong before! Although the class wasn't the most challenging it was EXCELLENT for beginners and is the perfect introduction to pilates. Erika was very friendly and was able to offer corrections to everyone and ensure you were truly learning. I can't say enough positive things about the class and studio! My only "negatives" are that 1. There is no water for purchase so should you forget a bottle you're out of luck and 2. I wish the beginner's class was offered on more days and times. Nonetheless I highly recommend the studio and have had a blast at the classes I have attended! Thanks Erika and MTM!

I regularly take their hot power flow yoga and their Pilates boot camp classes and also started appreciating the stretching classes offered here too. I used to go to CorePower regularly but I'm so happy to find a local studio I can go to instead that also offers such a nice variety of classes with such quality instructors. The studio definitely doesn't have the type of amenities CorePower has so if that's really important to you, this studio might not be it but I'm happy to forego those for a more reasonably priced studio!

I took an intermediate class and felt appropriately challenged and went through many new poses which I enjoyed. My instructor was awesome, she gave us different modifications for difficult poses and allowed us time to practice balance postures on our own. Edge Yoga is a small no frills studio with great classes which was exactly what I was looking for in a yoga studio.

Last summer I moved to NYC. Before that time I spent almost six years in Arlington studying with Mark and his team for 500-1000 total hours. He is a very experienced teacher, and the most studied and wise yoga expert I have met so far on the East Coast, bar none. Be advised that Mark does not teach pranayama (breath work) or meditation in his classroom, but this isn't because he would dismiss their benefits. When you practice with Mark, you're there to work, to build endurance, and become (I can't think of a better way to say it) incredibly super strong. In addition to having some years of active vinyasa practice under your belt, I recommend that you start to build a pranayama and meditation practice before coming to his classes, so that when you do come to explore the physical practice, you can do so with more focus, and someday get into postures you might only be able to dream of today. Mark is an all-around fitness guru; he gives great assists and adjustments in yoga, and is a savant when it comes to observing the body and training its movement. His cues are verbally advanced, but over time you'll realize that they contain all of the practically useful knowledge you need to cultivate a really badass practice. Rebecca is funny, brilliant and absolutely amazing with beginners. You'll love her style and her presence. I know I did. Nikki's classes were always my favorites. She does teach pranayama, and so beautifully. And every single week she brings a new sequence. Just an incredibly bright, creative and supportive teacher, and an expert on transitions and inversions. All of the staff bring something great to Edge. I totally recommend it to travelers in NoVa who have an active practice and are looking for great weekend morning offerings. To any locals who haven't tried it, get there!

Over the holidays I tried a hot pilates class with friends, so I wanted to find one in the NOVA area to give a try. After doing some scrolling I found Sukha offered a hot mat pilates class and eagerly signed up. The day of the class there was a huge storm and it was raining hard but luckily class was not cancelled! I arrived about 10 minutes early and only the instructor and maybe the owner (or front desk staff was there). They didn't say much, but welcomed me and told me I could go put my stuff in the lockers around the corner. Ok - easy enough. A few minutes later when I came back to the lobby there was still no "students" there but they told me I could go in the room and get set up. Ok - easy enough. The studio was BEAUTIFUL and with a huge window overlooking the street it was very calming on a rainy day. Eventually the instructor came in and said we'd start soon. Ok - easy enough. However she mentioned the heat wasn't really working, so although it would be warm it wouldn't be a try hot Pilates environment. Ok - sad. At the start of class there were only 3 of us and a few people virtually attending. I'm not sure if it was because of the rain or other factors, but the class was way smaller than expected. Anyways, it allowed the instructor to give us a very personalized experience and made for a good first class with lots of opportunity for clear instruction. I will say this class was NOT for beginners. Having gone to a few more classes at other studios since then, a lot of the movements I was unable to do just because they were kind of advanced. Not a huge deal just worth noting. Overall I did have a good class but was a little disappointed on the temperature. I also would have appreciated more engagement from the instructor before or after class, since I am so new to Pilates, but meh. I got the workout I came for. I haven't visited Sukha again, just because it wasn't quite what I was looking for regarding class size and content. However as I continue to learn I certainly would visit again in the future because it was a gorgeous studio space! However it's hard to speak to the community or the staff because the day I came it was very low attendance, rainy, and semi-quiet.

(Will totally take suggestions on where to find them!) First class: I was the only one in person in the whole studio, three people joined online. I had let the instructor know I was so happy I found a place finally that isn't heated and she welcomed me in. The studio itself is really nice, I was hoping this would be my new place. The class was set at 85, the room got to 82 degrees throughout the class. What was even more confusing is that I was just basically watching her talk to her laptop. I could have used adjustment (and even appreciate that if I'm not doing something right!) but she didn't break eye contact from the screen, and waited to end the online session when her laptop was closed to acknowledge me again. At the end I tried my best to understand and ask what happened with the heat, and she said it must have been a mistake in the settings, and asked me to please come back to her Thursday Vinyasa and assured me it wouldn't be warm and it was a mistake. Upon arrival Thursday, she was checking in someone in front of me and said "I hope you don't mind heat today!" And I asked about it and they said they changed their mind and I could do another slow-movement class that evening instead. I was already there and ready, so I left and didn't go back. As someone who can't tolerate the heat, I always look for that in the descriptions and don't practice where rooms are hot from previous sessions. I paid $40 for the intro special and wasn't able to have a good class, and something else really weird happened.... One day I had to reschedule, so I was trying to cancel (there's no number to the studio) and sent in an online form. I received an email that had a phone number, so when I called it the person (see photo) Ahmed answered and tried to get me to come to another studio, since he didn't work there any more. I reported that upon my first arrival and no one seemed to care. Such a bummer, major disconnect on what they say and what they do. Just odd interactions the whole time.
