If you're looking for knowledgable guides who do it right, I booked two tours with Golden Tour Guide in Madrid & Barcelona and have no regrets! Both were exceptional.
Madrid: Royal Palace Skip-the-Line Tour
Beatrice was the star of the show, and like many Spaniards, expect some sass. Beatrice runs a strict schedule and keeps it real. These tours can be large, and since you're on the guide's schedule, be mindful: arrive early, use the restroom beforehand, and respect the group's time.
Beatrice does a great job making the history lessons of the palace and royal family engaging and memorable -- especially when it comes to keeping all the royals straight (3rd, 4th, 5th, etc). She brings guests into the storytelling, which makes it easier to follow. She takes great care of her group and doesn't let anything/anyone ruin the guest experience.
Note: A major pro on booking a guided tour gives you exclusive access to some spaces not open to the public
Barcelona: Park Güell Skip-the-Line Tour
I did the Park Güell skip-the-line tour and highly recommend having a guide. The park is massive, and it's easy to get lost without understanding what you're seeing. A guide cuts through the BS and takes you straight to the highlights while explaining the history and architectural significance.
PROS: All tours include knowledgeable guides, audio headsets so you can hear everything, and the best part: skip-the-line access. If you miss your original time slot, they may let you join a later tour based on availability (and language), which is amazing if you easily lose track of time.
CON: These are the larger tour groups you scoff at. They take up space, and at times, feels like the guide is herding cattle to keep everyone moving.
Pro tip: Look for the guides with a blue umbrella and a Golden Tour Guide sign. Make sure to arrive on time and follow instructions sent because you will get left behind! read more
