We love this place. We had the crab cakes with the watercress salad, Edaname, and tempura Calamari. Everything was excellent and they're good portions for my family I had the Tempura Shrimp & vegetable dinner and fried rice tonight. It came with Miso soup. It was excellent. It was a lot of shrimp and plenty of big chunks of vegetables. It was a large portion of food. My family had a variety of sushi rolls. They have a large variety of appetizers that are delicious. They have all kinds of entrees Sushi rolls. Everything is always fresh and displayed beautifully. The staff is friendly and attentive. Come on in and have some fantastic sushi. Sat down for some sushi on a Sunday night and it was pretty quiet. The music was classy jazz and the servers dress to match that vibe with collared shirts and ties. They have seating at the sushi counter or tables. We ordered wayyy too much food. Forgot how decadent golden sauce is and how rich it can be. Came here on my friend's recommendation of this being their favorite sushi place. The waitress was very nice and welcoming, even though we came near their closing time. Golden Shrimp $9 - Oh yeah, any place that has great golden shrimp gets an automatic 5-star review. It was artery clogging mouthwatering delicious! The shrimp with the golden sauce is served on a perfectly portion bed of rice. Spider Roll $7.50 - Yum. Salmon Deluxe $16 - Not really my kind of roll, but it was good. Excellent! Each item we ordered was delicious. We were a bit leery because menu didn't have any descriptions really and we were the only people in the restaurant but it was St Paddy's Day and most people were probably out celebrating. We tried two Rolls the Crab Rangoon Roll and the Diablo Roll both were phenomenal and I believe there was 8 rolls on each order. Also tried half order of Chicken Cutlet, (2 cutlets, salad and white rice) and half order of Beef Rolls (6 total asparagus with rolled steak) both much larger than we expected and very good. This place has gone downhill since moving out of the mini golf location years back. I never cared for the new location...I thought the inside was unappealing and the service wasnt the greatest. After moving out of the area, and coming back after a couple years...I decided to order some sushi to go recently. When I pulled into the parking lot...my initial thought was that the whole place was closed down. It was so run down looking, I couldn't believe it hasn't been taken care of all these years. What a mess. The place is always empty when I go there. So depressing and lifeless inside. The old location was so classy, warm, and pleasant...with competent servers. And BYOB. Ugh..miss those days. I feel like Golden Rolls needs to open up a to go sushi place on the square or something...and get rid of this ugly, clunky place. read more

Golden Rolls just reopened in a larger location. It's staff was very nice upon arrival, we were greeted and sat immediately. We were planning to move our meal quickly so the first time our server visited the table we placed our orders. We ordered both sushi and hot food, both were presented to the table at once. Our order: Woodstock Roll: named after the town, this fried fish roll was an sort of an experiment. It was tasty but nothing special. Dragon Roll: Classic dragon roll, it was prepared well with fresh eel and shrimp tempura. Entrée of Pork Cutlets: fair quality pork prepared really well with asian cabbage salad and white rice. The service fit our shortened time schedule and the food was ultimately pretty good. It's not by any means the best sushi I've had, but it's definitely good for McHenry County. [3.8/5] read more

I ordered a salad, two soups and an order of spring rolls. The only reason I'm giving this review 1 star is they have the best ginger dressing for their salads. Other than that, the spring roll was 90% cucumber with one sliver of shrimp on top and one leaf of cilantro. I thought they were known for their sushi rolls, very disappointed. Also, contacted the restaurant and left my name and number for the manager to call me back, still haven't received a call back. So if you want awful customer service and an $8 roll full of cucumber, this is your place. Update!! 4/18 Still have not received a call from a manager after leaving a message. I'm not sure if Golden Rolls is under new management or what but my husband and I were very disappointed with the quality of the sushi. I have no problem spending close to $100 on a meal with tip, but the sushi/service was definitely not on par with that price. We got crab cakes and edamame as an appetizer. Crab cakes were pretty good but the edamame wasn't cooked long enough. The beans were hard. I feel like it's kind of difficult to mess up edamame - but maybe I'm wrong... For our meal we shared a Philly roll, Godzilla roll, and Crab Rangoon roll. **do not order from the front part of the menu if you don't want to spend AT LEAST $20/roll* I'm sorry but if I'm going to spend $22 on ONE roll I would at least expect it to have fish through the whole roll. Not the case. The Godzilla roll was stuffed with some sort of vegetable and minimal fish - like barely there. My husband ate the Philly roll which he said was ok. It was wrapped in seaweed which most places don't do with the Philly roll. The Crab Rangoon roll was ok - nothing to write home about. As soon as we were leaving I had an awful stomach ache. I wasn't over stuffed because we didn't finish our meal. Stomach ache lashed pretty much the entire evening too. Overall, we just weren't impressed. There are much better sushi places in Mchenry County, and we unfortunately won't be going back to Golden Rolls. read more

My family and friends all go regularly and get take out regularly. I have dined here and at the old location. More than 30 times I have eaten here. As a Sushi snob, I can tell you this is a good one. No its not fancy like some other over priced Sushi places in McHenry county which I have tried. No they dont make tiny rolls, they make big Rolls and Fresh Sushi! I dont give a shit what anyone says about Golden Rolls, it is the absolute best quality sushi available in and/or around McHenry County. Hands down, without a doubt, there is no competition.. As somewhat of a sushi eating professional, I immediately knew something was up during my first time here. I had ordered 7 or 8 pieces of salmon sashimi and 2 or 3 pieces of tuna sashimi. For those who are unaware, sashimi is raw sliced fish, all by itself - no rice, no rolls, no bullshit - just the fish. I expected typical quality sashimi for this area but I was shocked! Immediately after my first piece of salmon, I called over the waitress and asked her 1.) if she knew for an absolute fact whether this was fresh & never frozen salmon; and 2.) if she knew its origin... She answered with what I assumed - the salmon was from the North Atlantic coastal areas of Europe (she gave me the exact location, which I forget, but I believe was the Netherlands area where the water is deep and ice cold - as I could tell by the amazing flavor of just one bite) and that it was indeed fresh; never has it been frozen. This is a rarity with sushi when you're not in a coastal area. They go to great lengths (and expense) to procure and offer the freshest fish available. It makes a massive difference for us true sushi fans who are there to enjoy the quality and not to simply be trendy and "love sushi". In my whole life, only once have I had better and more fresh sashimi than Golden Rolls and that was Sozo in Ft. Lauderdale. I have probably eaten in over fifty sushi restaurants all over North America and I am speaking solely for the quality of fish. The service wasn't exceptional but it wasn't disappointing either. Prices? On point with fresh, imported fish that hasn't been frozen. Atmosphere? Comfortable. The bar & sushi bar are nice, clean and modern. This is at their new location on RTE 47.. I do not work there, nor was I paid for this review. In all actuality, I'd hope they make some improvements with the staff's ability to be a bit more welcoming and interesting. Also, the staff needs to explain the freshness/quality of their fish - this is crucial as a selling point for both the restaurant and the customer. I have to say that I was impressed with the proper and prompt answer about the origin of the fish. Many places have no clue and/or lie about the origin and whether or not their fish is frozen, which for me is apparent on tasting. For any of you readers who are travelers or truly know your sashimi, GO HERE, you will not be disappointed. I could care less if they served my order on a paper plate and treated me like shit because after all, there is NOWHERE in a 30 mile radius where you can get properly cut, real, fresh fish of this quality. Also, the beer was ice cold and the rice was absolutely perfect (I tried one of my friend's tuna rolls). Please don't give them crappy reviews because your "Cowabunga Roll" comes with more sauce at the other sushi place; other places load rolls with sauce and crispy crusts to mask the shitty flavor of the frozen, low quality fish. Here, they do it correct and they deserve a little respect for that. This place is a gem. It is important to mention that Golden Rolls could probably use a bit of work on the service/business side of things - this place has the potential to be exceptional in all aspects. Anyway, I will be back again and again. I will update my review to reflect any changes if I notice improvements in the service and overall experience. After months of my very favorite place being closed, I went back tonight with friends to our favorite sushi place. First off, I travel all the way from East Lakeview in Chicago as this is the best sushi I ever have had. Me and my two friends had reservations for tonight at 7:00pm. when we arrived the young hostess seemed over whelmed and told us a few minutes, which turned into 20 min. She even took another party that came in after us to a table.. (Have two people in the front of the house. One to host and the other to answer the phone and do take out. Get the take out food off the main checkout counter!) It wasn't packed, busy, but not packed. As a suggestion, instead of having people wait by the door, offer them a seat by the bar or stand near it. Pre-dinner cocktails bring in more revenue! When we got to our table we ordered a bottle of wine and sushi. The young male server who waited on us was good and brought our food out in good time. he did check back with us but we sat for a long time towards the end for dishes to be picked up and our payment to be taken. we then got up to take the bill to the register to be paid. It wasn't that busy then and I found it to be bad service and unattentive. we were in the second room walking out and three large tables had sat empty, with dirty dishes all over them. Tacky! It looked like a dirty Old Country Buffet. Are there no bus boys? The female server who brought our wine to us told us that they are short of help. Really?? Hire people then! Seems this was an issue a few weeks ago. If the bad service continues people will get fed up and not come anymore. I miss the charm of the old place when it was BYOB. If it was working, then don't mess with it. The atmosphere needs a boost, ie: pictures on the wall and to give it a better atmosphere in the second large room Seems the service has been an issue with other people as well. If I could give ZERO stars I would!!!!!! Oh my goodness. Walked in table for two waited 15 minutes for the waitress to get our drinks smh!! finally order and she wants to give me an attitude and not listen to my order when I'm explaining to her what I'm asking for. a party of 4 walks in 20 minutes after us and there food is being served before ours. When I tell you my blood is boiling!!! I seriously can't believe the unprofessional and rude low life people running this restaurant, my dad went up to ask what was going on and the server had the audacity to say that that party of 4 walked in before us. Oh my god what a joke!!! Here comes the chef trying to argue and the sever wants to pull out the tab saying they walked in when I seen with my own eyes and was sitting there. Being a server myself this is no way to treat a PAYING customer! Ridiculous I really was excited to eat here but never again will I even try. we didn't even get our food yeah exactly when that table of 4 was already eating. My best advice is to only eat here if u have 5 hours to wait on ur sushi and want to deal with a 15 year old moron as your server. oh did I mention the chefs want to start talking crap in Spanish, news flash we speak Spanish so try again. terrible, unprofessional and pathetic management at this restaurant. I hate writing a bad review, but I guess if nobody says anything then nobody will fix it. First, this is a new restaurant in the terms that I just noticed it one day and my wife and I went in to try the food. I eat sushi all the time locally, nationally and internationally. I like to think that I know what tasty Sushi/Asian cuisine taste like. To start I'll mention the atmosphere is what you'd expect from paper tablecloths and paper menus. The type of place that gives you a can of soda with a cup of ice. Nothing fancy and that's fine. I eat for the taste. Staff was polite and attentive. All the tables on the Wed before Christmas were full on the smaller side of the restaurant. Very clean and quiet Here it goes... this is the worse sushi I've ever had. I tried three types of rolls, all were lacking. My wife had some soup which wasn't bad, but the sushi was to the point that I didn't eat the last three pieces because I just couldn't. My wife thought I was exaggerating and went to eat my leftover pieces. She tried one and gave me a look. Couldn't be worse. I read some other reviews first so I might add that it could an off chief. Maybe other types of food are fine. Just not today and not the three rolls I ordered. I'm sure the restaurant will read this at some point. Please take my advice. Go to Kyoto in Crystal Lake for example, order some similar rolls to what you serve. Now look at the visual difference, taste the difference. You really need to be on par with other local sushi restaurants, especially if you're going to charge around the same price and lack the atmosphere. Your product is horrible by comparison and you need to fix it. Even your simple rolls are just lacking taste, freshness and presentation. Good food, great service, pleasant atmosphere = no complaints. Sitting at the bar in front of the prep area, it was interesting watching the sushi chef occasionally frown at her creations and then make little aesthetic adjustments. Pros: --Good food --Great service --Clean Cons: --Sort of a low-budget reno of an old family restaurant, but you can't really knock someone making an effort in a small independent business, and plus, it's clean and new. Sitting at the bar is the best spot. -Pergola looks like it's still being worked on and since it takes up the whole front, it makes the whole building like like it's still under construction. But, like Dante said "I assure you, we're open" It's definitely a great choice when it comes to the geographical area. Would it be 4 stars compared to a downtown fancy sushi store? Of course not, Woodstock is a far flung suburb, but I'm not driving to a downtown fancy sushi store either. I'll happily be going back here, though. read more

We're out here visiting from Seattle, a very big sushi city, and I was nervous since it seems to not be popular here but this place is GREAT. The rolls are big and not just filled with rice. The spider, avocado, and Philly rolls are awesome. This has been my go-to eatery while staying here since I don't eat processed diner/fast/fried food. Only cons are the wait time but so far our orders have always been ready faster than the time estimated... and honestly I don't mind waiting for good food. This is my second time dining here. I gave it another chance but I won't be back. It takes an extraordinary amount of time to get the sushi. I was told it would be faster to eat in than to do take out but it ended up being longer. The restaurant is too cold and the avocado was not even ripe. Took the fiancee her for a date night. Waitress was new but still delivered great service. Food was fresh, rolls were well made, and the drinks were strong. Only issue was that the food was delivered out of order and in pieces. We ordered 6 rolls, 3 came out, a few minutes later two more come out, and a few minutes later the final roll was delivered. Not sure if this was done to get the rolls out while they were fresh or if the kitchen just lost track of things but the delay was significant enough between the rolls being delivered that the kitchen would have been better served by delaying assembling some rolls so that everything was ready in roughly the same time span. read more

Golden Rolls has the great sushi in the whole city at such a fair and reasonable price point. Their sushi is phenomenal! The serving is really good, they put more fish, crab, meat, or anything than the rice. All of the toppings and inclusions are great. They also have cool beverages. The sushi is really fresh and the way they serve it is really creative. They also offer some fresh oysters and clams. Their sashimi is also different from other stores that also offer it. Their fresh different kind of fish in sashimi is really great plus it comes with an awesome dip and sauce. Their waiter and waitresses were really nice. All of them are decent, professional, and very accommodating. They all know how to treat their customer so well. The customer service is outstanding. All of the employees are well-trained. This place is huge, clean, and bright. The atmosphere inside is very calming, relaxing, and amazing. Their seating is plenty and wide. Golden Rolls is really worth trying! I'm obsessed with sushi! I'm originally from the Woodstock area and was in town from Denver for the holidays visiting family. When I come home to visit I'm usually prepared not to eat sushi for the week (yeah, I'm a bit of an addict.. before Denver I lived in downtown Chicago and that's where it all began) but to my surprise, I got to enjoy some sushi! My mom and I went to get our nails done across the street and wanted to give Golden Rolls a try, especially with their new location and all! My first instinct is always to check Yelp reviews. They had a solid 3 stars. Not great but not horrible. Decided to give it whirl! I'm so glad we did. Our waiter was very attentive and a genuinely nice guy, which I really appreciate good service! My mom and I both ordered a house salad to start. It was super fresh and great ginger dressing. We also ordered edamame which was also fresh and tasty! My mom ordered the Crazy Roll. I sampled it of course. We both thought it was really good! She especially loved it but for me the roll was a little too big for my liking. I prefer a roll you can eat in one bite. I ordered the Salmon Deluxe roll (I believe that's the name) and it was super fresh and tasty. I also ordered a few pieces of nigiri, and they had my favorite --- super white tuna! And they gave me an extra piece as a bonus! Yay! All the nigiri was also very fresh. We polished everything off with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc which was really really tasty! So tasty we got one more glass lol. We would definitely recommend Golden Rolls if you're looking for a nice sushi experience. I was skeptical because it was in Woodstock (no offense to Woodstock, but you know...not a big city), and was just very pleasantly surprised! First off there golden shrimp is burnt and drenched in soy sauce, it's Severed on lettuce or rice. The egg had no flavor and was not fluffy. It took at least 30 minutes for our appetizer, the sushi we order was delivered incorrect. 3/5 of the rolls we ordered were made wrong, we told the manager that we didn't want them because they were incorrect. He said that we had to pay for the 3 rolls even if he had to throw them away. There was horrible customer service, sushi is very low grade to be priced so high. We do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. We will never return to this restaurant. read more
