3.5 stars for my first time. All these years being a tower rat and never tried Golden Restaurant! This establishment has been around forever and a day. It's kind of dated inside but very clean! They are attentive with keeping everything neat and tidy. I like the lighting- looks a little 80s retro. The menu is pretty vast. I wanted to try the complete dinner and really enjoyed the egg flower soup and crunchy wonton with sweet n sour sauce to start. I ordered mushroom chicken and it was not what I thought. It was fried pieces of chicken soaked in gravy with a few mushroom thrown in - I'm not a fan of that. I had thought it was going to be a stir- fry type of dish. Perhaps I read the menu item wrong or maybe they need to be more detailed. The fried rice is OK. I'm not a fried rice fanatic to begin with. I should have gotten steam rice. The noodles were tasty and I enjoyed the veggies and chicken in it. Service was also OK. Although she was kind, she rarely checked on us, I had wanted to add a Diet Coke to my order but she seldom came around so I just stuck with water. read more

This is an old school Chinese restaurant. I felt like I was stepping back in time, in the best way. We came for lunch. They were very busy. The food was delicious & plentiful. I got the garlic chicken, the hubby got the orange chicken, my mother in law had chicken chow mein. We all left with to go boxes because there is that much food. I really love the area where this restaurant is but I wasn't impressed with the food... One of my favorite dishes to order is chicken wings... so I did and they were really gooey... maybe not cooked enough... they just didn't satisfy me. I am hoping it was just a bad day... I will go back to try them again. I also ordered one of the combination plates... the chow mein noodles were too chewy as well... maybe next time I can ask for pan fried noodles... I liked the vibe inside it was very relaxing and the waitress was kind and kept checking on us... The rice was good and so was the fried shrimp... I have been a customer of Golden for years, and I unfortunately have to say it is nowhere near what it was. The quality of the food is disappointing, and I said the last time I went that I wouldn't go back but being it had been over 6 months and I was in the mood for Chinese I figured I'd give them another shot but I could not have been more disappointed. I did get it to go this time, but I asked for the noodles extra crispy, they were hard to chew and not because they were crispy it was like they rewarmed already cooked noodles - I honestly can't even explain it. The rice tastes totally different and also looks a lot different, really doesn't taste like anything. The orange chicken was a waste; the pieces were big/ fatty and just not even worth eating. I asked for extra hot mustard and soy sauce and was given one of each - not to mention they give hot mustard in packets now and it literally tastes like nothing. Very disappointing for one of the better Chinese restaurants in town to have gone downhill in such a short period of time. read more

This is a favorite when I meet up with old coworkers during the work week. Great food and customer service. The servers are really friendly. They are also quick getting orders and bringing out food. During lunch, it does get busy. So, it best to go when it is not the normal lunch hour. I see a lot of familiar faces that work downtown here when we would visit during the lunch hour. Definitely recommend for Chinese food on this side of town! It doesn't feel or smell dirty every time we visit. But it is hard to stay awake after returning to work after eating here. :) read more

Food seems a bit pricey but you actually get a fair amount for what you're paying. The golden chicken is super yummy in particular.

This restaurant is smack in the middle of the Tower District across from Ragin Records. The taste of the food could improve. It's as bland as WGBecky's potato salad at a cookout. Honey, you got no flava. First & last time here. I didn't even finish & when the waitress asked if I wanted a to-go container she was surprised when I said, 'No'. I got a drink refill & was pleased they served Pepsi products, however I could not take my drink to-go because they don't have drink cups. Well double-boo on you. They do have Apple Pay tho. Won't be back, I know better Chinese restaurants elsewhere. read more

Was in Fresno for the day over the weekend and couldn't decide where to eat, so me and my friend popped in here. Immediately upon walking in, it was very warm inside (uncomfortably warm). We should've left right then & there, but we were both starving & had to pee. Drinks were served quick, but our lunch took forever to arrive. The fried wontons did not look like any fried wonton I've ever had before, it was just a fried wonton wrapper lol. I couldn't even eat the soup, it was so gross (and I am not a picky eater whatsoever). The entrees came out, and again, I couldn't even eat the chow mein either, it was hard and all stuck together like it had been microwaved! The rice & the lemon chicken I ordered was good, but I definitely will never eat here again. Our server never checked up on us, and my friend never got a soda refill. The servers didn't seem very friendly either. The whole experience was awful and I can't believe I spent $40 there, going to Panda Express or any fast-food restaurant would've been better. read more

Super cute little place, very clean inside, bomb portions and yummy food! Not too greasy, not too salty with the perfect amount of fresh vegetables. Used to come here when I was a kid and I'm so glad to see it's still the same. Very reasonable prices for the amount of food you get, I got two full meals out of my $15 lemon chicken dinner! I was recommended to try this place. Thought that maybe this place would surprise me. It didn't. From what I ordered which was a pork chow mein and a brandy chicken, I can only say that this place is average. Though the 3 stars might be a higher mark that it deserves. I had ordered to go. The chow mein shouldn't be stir fried noodles then topped with bean sprouts and pork chashu. You need to stir fry both up and mix it all together. How do you get this wrong? The noodles were very plain too. The brandy chicken was tasty and tasted like they've been marinated for some time before it was cooked. They were made into lollipop liked pieces. Would I recommend this place to people? No. Though I only ordered 2 things, the fact that you mess up a chow mein dish makes me believe you don't know what to do. read more

I wrote a review about a year ago, but adding another just to confirm our continued excellent meals here. Tonight we had wonton soup, served nice and hot with thin skinned wontons (hint of five spice powder) and a nice selection of crisp-tender vegetables. Our server, Lisa (our favorite), mentioned that the green beans and asparagus were particularly nice that night so we took her advice and ordered chicken and green beans. The chef kindly added some bean sprouts, celery and onions at our request. It was very delicious and we appreciated Lisa steering us to what was extra fresh. On a Wednesday night for an early dinner it was nice and quiet, but was getting busy as we left. We always enjoy coming here when we visit family. read more

I have been going to this place since college. It's not fancy Chinese food but it's always been my 'go to' place whenever I wanted Chinese food. Went there for my birthday and I was shocked cause the food was awful. That wonderful soup tasted like it was watered down last of pot. My noodles were cold ( no time to reorder since it took forever to order and get food) Egg FooYung was doughy in center so we ended up packing all our meals up and I took it home to my dogs who love Hines's food. Service here has always been sort of indifferent but this time bordered on flat out rude. Topper was when we each asked for hot mustard and the waitress bought one plopped on the table and said you all can share. I hope they were just having an off night but just cause you have been in business for a long time does not mean you can relax your standards! read more

Just had dinner and wow was it wonderful! It's Friday night and it was steady busy. We were acknowledged and seated quickly, given menus and water. Server came, took our drink orders, returned with our drinks, answered our many menu questions then took our dinner orders. Our food came quickly and was absolutely delicious. We have plenty of leftovers for tomorrow. Servers were very attentive. Loved the food, restaurant, ambiance and view. We will definitely be returning to try more dishes!! read more

Hot tea, two delicious wonTons with perfect sweet and sour sauce, egg flower chicken soup, friend rice , chicken chow mein , and two egg foo youngs for just $9.75+ tip OMG I just had the most delicious and great value meal tonight at the best Chinese restaurant I didn't know about in Tower! This place is charming in and out--they have two huge lion statues outside and the decor is great inside as well. We were seated in a big comfy booth, there are smaller tables as well. The service is great! Our water glasses were always full and our food came out pretty quickly. The menu is classic. Lots of vegetarian options and they do not use any animal fats in their cooking --only vegetable oil. The food was so delicious! I really enjoyed the mushroom sauce on the egg foo young. Perfectly prepared fried rice and vegetable and chicken chow mein. I really enjoyed my meal here and look forward to coming back soon. read more
