Up the stairs to Golden Phoenix

I live quite close to Birkenhead shops, and whilst pregnant with my son, I had ducked into the Golden Phoenix one lunch time, for a quick order of two meals on the takeaway menu- a delicious combination meat stir fry with vegetables and rice and a seafood fried rice, which was also simple but scrumptious. Just a while back again, I had the opportunity to book a dinner for five at the Golden Phoenix and I was thrilled to return again and try more seafood - the number one reason to eat at Golden Phoenix, in my books. Very popular with the local Chinese community, the food on the menu is traditional, and bursting with flavor and goodness. If you dine with a big group, take it upon the table to order a bunch of meals and share as you get so much more out of trying more than one. The Birkenhead restaurant is quite a large space, which shows that they do draw crowds, especially on the weekends, and at dinner time. The Yum Cha here could quite possibly be the best of the Shore.

Cheap, noisy and vibrant, lots of gaudy yellow décor but lots of windows with a view of Auckland from our table. Typical Yum Char fair, one of the better ones in my opinion but with 3 newbies to Yum Char at the table, not a lot of flavour and too slimy and doughy for them. I loved the Duck and mince balls the best and the ice cream balls were interesting. It was only $20 each and I was full on leaving. It's BYO but as we went for lunch we didn't take this up. The regular Chinese menu looked great with the locals doing more of that than Yum Char. We passed on the sinew and chicken feet though. haha

Food: 4.7/5 Service 4.2/5…read moreValue 4.1/5 This restaurant was highly recommended by my Kiwi friend and it didn't disappoint. The four of us got the full roasted duck, fried rice, roasted pork, shiu mai, and shrimp dumplings. I will start by saying that this restaurant was really expensive, even the green beans were almost $50NZ so just be weary that you will spend a lot here. However, the food was amazing! Roasted duck: definitely the highlight of the meal. For $80 NZ, I felt like it was the best value for the price. Super tender meat, great texture on the skin, and wonderful taste overall Fried Rice: Great base for all of the other dishes. Also came with a spicy chili oil that put this dish over the top! Roasted Pork: I personally wish the skin was a bit thicker and crispier but my friends all thought it was good. There were also complaints about the pork being relatively fat heavy, but I thought it was a great balance. Shiu mai and Shrimp dumplings: Pretty basic but still delicious! Recommend if you enjoy. 1/4 of the shrimp dumpling peels fell apart when grabbing it. Overall would definitely recommend coming here for great food but expect to spend a pretty penny! All of this was about $250NZ

The outside is deceptive, they don't look nearly that large, but clearly they get big crowds and are used to it. Got there early so hard to properly evaluate service (which was excellent, even a little overbearing) as they were virtually empty when I walked in. The dim sum itself was from so-so to just okay, the har cheung fun (shrimp rice noodle roll) was a good example: skins too thick, shrimp not memorable at all. Beef tripe (ngau paak yip) is usually a pale white but well seasoned, this one was off in color and perhaps a tad over-steamed as the texture wasn't perfect. It was adequate if you need your dim sum fix.

The sign stood there for several months stating " Yum Cha coming soon "...and we waited ..and waited..and now just last night it opened. At last!! Tucked in the back of the building at 130 Lincoln Rd it has a lot of parking , so no worries in regards to that. Upon entering just now you would notice the walls are pretty bare of any form of decoration, but i would think that they would want to " jazz " it up sometime soon. The welcome was good and we were shown quickly to a table. It was quiet when we arrived but upon leaving it had picked up quite a bit, including in two of the three private rooms they have. Anyway looking at the menu we ordered the Beef with cashew nut, cumin  lamb with pancake ( or bun if you rather call it that ) and as even at 7pm some of the Yum Cha menu was still available we ordered the blue egg porridge, bbq pork bun and custard bun. The porridge was the best i have tasted for a long time...sssoooo delicious!!...but don't forget them buns ... definitely tasty too. As for the other dishes... the beef was okay , but the lamb was far better. Maybe it's because i am partial to the dishes where you eat the meat wrapped inside the bun or pancake. They don't have a liquor licence yet, but you can still BYO. So anyway overall service was great, food was good ( the porridge being outstanding! ), atmosphere inside despite lack of decoration was very good and price reasonable. We will definitely be back again at the proper Yum Cha time!

It was only after reading a recent review by Cheap Eats that I remembered how much I used to love it. I had a re-read of the review I wrote back in 2013, "After driving past Royal City Dumpling many times I finally tried last week and I am very glad I did, it will now be my go to restaurant in Auckland for dumplings as they were truly delicious. Their pork and fennel dumplings were particularly amazing. I look forward to going back to try the noodles which also looked great. The owners are friendly and prices very reasonable." Their menu has changed since then. They now have a yum char menu as well as a full dumpling menu and full sized Chinese menu. I have since been back twice in one week which is always a good sign. The first time was to try their yum char menu for dinner. We were excited by all the options and low prices but knew we couldn't order everything this time. We went with the Steamed Coriander and Shrimp Dumplings ($5.30), Deep Fried Squid ($6.50), Deep Fried Spring Rolls ($6.50) and the Stir-fried Chinese Veges ($11.80). This was more than enough for two people. The squid was extremely large for $6.50 and while it was delicious we really needed another 1 or 2 people to help us finish it. The spring rolls were probably my favourite. They were FULL of shrimp and were crispy and delicious. But everything was good. I then went back to get some takeaway dumplings for dinner. Pork and Fennel pan-fried. As Royal Dumpling is across the road from Pak n Save I thought I would pop over while the dumplings were being made. I may have left them for too long as when I got them home they were a bit chewy, luke warm and not that great. This was entirely my fault, I just want to warn people so they are not tempted to do the same. I was a sad dumpling eater that night.

However, if it's damn tasty Chinese food in massive portions for sweet bugger all money, then you've definitely come to the right place!! Judging by how full this place gets these days, word of mouth has spread - plenty of people are down for cheap and cheerful! Gather your friends or family, bring a bottle down (BYO only, no drinks menu - no corkage!!!), and get a few of the big dishes to share. Everything's great (and nothings more than $10-$15), but I recommend the salt and pepper squid, the beans, the satay beef (comes out sizzling!) and the sweet and sour pork. Awesome awesome place, just make sure you book ahead on a Fri/Sat night and don't expect great service or ambiance.
