Before I continue, I need to point out that I've always found the employees at Mr Chan to be very polite and well-meaning. If you're eating in, the food is average Chinese restaurant fayre but think twice about takeaways! Our first experience was greasy and cold, the second and third were pretty dire even though we tried many different dishes and the latest (should've learnt the first time but, as I say, we're not exactly spoilt for choice around here) was the worst so far. Time to Yelp (I prefer positive yelps but sometimes needs must). This particular experience included luke warm, at best, chicken chow mien, two of, minus any sign whatsoever of actual chicken (or anything else for that matter that wasn't a noodle). Although I did find one bean sprout. The chicken fried rice did appear to have something along the lines of meat in it but didn't seem to actually have been fried. I might as well have microwaved some rice in a pouch and saved a small fortune. Worst however was the (albeit complementary) prawn crackers which were so rubbery they didn't actually crack or crunch and even my son, the dust bin, passed on them. Toast and marmite all round then. I guess there's a lot to be said for competition. Mr Chan doesn't seem to try to offer decent food, but then it knows there are no local alternatives. Two stars- one star for the polite staff and one star for at least being there. I'm being too generous, maybe it should be one star - I'll go for 1 and a half.

We were to meet…read moreour friends at 19:20 for a 19:30 meal, when booking the table my wife had been informed that they were very busy due to Christmas party bookings. As my wife and I live in Thorpe we arrived early before our friends expecting to wait for them in the bar area, however we were ushered directly to our seats as one of the party groups were all ready in the bar, we felt uncomfortable being seated at the table without our friends. This however, was the only downside of the evening, the food was excellent, the service was friendly albeit a liittle slow, the deserts were a little on the small side but when we jokingly pointed this out to the staff a free additional desert appeared. I always find chinese menus difficult, not knowing what to choose so I normally go for a set meal which I did on this ocassion, the set meals start from £18 each with a minimum of two ordering. All in all an excellent meal and I would recommend the Chinese Cottage to anyone, try it, you want be dissapointed.

The food is still quite good but if you like to eat late then you will be unlucky as we have been advised when trying to book a table for say 9pm that the Chef wants to go home by 10.00. The toilets are quite unacceptable, the gents has a very low pressure of water at the basin which results in a trickle of cold (no Hot) water barely enough to wash your hands, and the floor is more like going for a paddle! This I have experienced on more than one occasion. I addressed my concerns to the female manager, she responded with being too busy and not enough staff to clean. I tried to continue my conversation with her and she turned her back on me refusing to discuss the lack of basin water, let alone no hot running water or soap! Clearly there is a lack of proper management /front of house This restaurant is a heath hazard, it needs some investment in a complete makeover inside and outside, I don't even want to think about what the customer doesn't see in the kitchens etc! We will not be eating here again any time soon.

I have to…read moreconfess we didn't plan to come here, but as we walked down the road on a Monday at 5:30, it was the only place open! This is a quaint, traditional Chinese restaurant. None of the fancy frills of Aqua Eight, but, as we sat there, we honestly couldn't think of another chinese restaurant in town that is serving from a menu, rather than "buffet" style, which we're not fans of. We ate from there Peking Set Menu: £17.90pp for four starters, duck pancakes, 3 mains dishes and rice. All the food was exactly as youd expect: Rather boringly we went for old favourites: Lemon Chicken, Crispy Beef and a fried scallop dish which was fabulous. It was quiet ( we were the only ones in there, and service service was adequate but not brilliant. That said, we were off to the theatre so in all honestly we were clock watching a bit, as you can sooooo easily lose time in a restaurant. To sum up, good food, adequate service, lovely decor in the restaurant, and very basic toilets! If you fancy a Chinese without the frills, and like me, abhor buffets, you wont go wrong here.

We also asked for a bit more of a kick in spice and they delivered. Food is also very reasonably priced! Now they have had e refurb, the decor is sleek and cool. The food follows suit and does not disappoint, so we are trying a take away tonight!
