This is the only Chinese takeaway within several miles (the one in Wickham Market is very good if you don't mind waiting ridiculously long times- order well ahead during busy times, I digress). Before I continue, I need to point out that I've always found the employees at Mr Chan to be very polite and well-meaning. If you're eating in, the food is average Chinese restaurant fayre but think twice about takeaways! Our first experience was greasy and cold, the second and third were pretty dire even though we tried many different dishes and the latest (should've learnt the first time but, as I say, we're not exactly spoilt for choice around here) was the worst so far. Time to Yelp (I prefer positive yelps but sometimes needs must). This particular experience included luke warm, at best, chicken chow mien, two of, minus any sign whatsoever of actual chicken (or anything else for that matter that wasn't a noodle). Although I did find one bean sprout. The chicken fried rice did appear to have something along the lines of meat in it but didn't seem to actually have been fried. I might as well have microwaved some rice in a pouch and saved a small fortune. Worst however was the (albeit complementary) prawn crackers which were so rubbery they didn't actually crack or crunch and even my son, the dust bin, passed on them. Toast and marmite all round then. I guess there's a lot to be said for competition. Mr Chan doesn't seem to try to offer decent food, but then it knows there are no local alternatives. Two stars- one star for the polite staff and one star for at least being there. I'm being too generous, maybe it should be one star - I'll go for 1 and a half. read more
