Had a few takeaways from here and although expensive compared to other Chinese takeaways, the food has always been good.

Wings: a seriously up lifting eagle of Cantonese/Peeking food!…read more Considering the amount of favourable reviews on other sites that this place has, I'm very surprised to see that this is to be the first yelp review. We were first attracted to Wings due to the duck and pork hanging in the window. A properly marinated and hung peeking duck is a marvelous treat for any carnivorous human. Yet one that is not that easy to find. The window hinted at great promise of that treat. So when furious fat Friday arrived, (you know, fat Friday *after* a paycheck, as opposed to other fat Fridays), hubs and I dutifully headed to Wings for a take out meal. We ordered a huge amount of food! Well it was our first Chinese take out food since our arrival in the area. I have to say, this place did live up to its reviews, (elsewhere on the web, natch!). Our prawn toasts were generously smoothered in minced prawns, and the portion was equally sizeable. The barbeque spare ribs were the only part that were just above average. Sadly, some of the meat was dry and stringy and even the lashings of syrup could not hide this. However, they were flavorful and, again, a well sized portion. The roast duck in soy sauce was perfect. The duck pink, juicer than your naughty aunt, and with beautifully rendered fat. All served traditionally cold with soy on the side. The duck in plum sauce needed a good stir to ensure the fat mixed back into the sauce, but it still retained the right amount of sticky-sweet to compliment the meat. A personal preference is for my duck to be coated in flour before a flash in a fryer. If that had happened, this good dish would have been made great. Our crispy chilli beef was sweet n spicy, our chow mien thankfully dry and without sauce. Goodness, I hate a soggy chow mien. I'd have liked a bit more roast pork though. Wink wink! Finally our Hong Kong style sweet and sour was epic. Well balanced on the s&s, generous, and with veggies that were neither soggy or raw. There is an overabundance of raw veggies in s&s, so this was really pleasant. We finshed nearly all of this. Please take into account that we had a portion of noodles each. I got full, but just wanted to keep on eating, it was sooo tasty. I can't wait to try try the fish dishes, and I'm stupidly excited about the soft-shell crab. There is a reason why Wings doesn't need a website, a presence on just est, or run a delivery service - good old word of the web/mouth is all that this tasty little place needs!

On occasion I have used other Chinese restaurants and in comparison I have found most of them wanting - even the more expensive ones! Wings' roast duck is magnificent, as are their prawns, but really all of their other dishes are excellent. Try their fried squid with chili and garlic, you'll be glad you did! The service is friendly and efficient; the portion sizes are good. The only downside is that at weekends they get so busy you may have to queue up. Still, well worth the wait!!

A family run business that has been there for over 40 years located on the Gant's Hill roundabout…read moreright above Gant's Hill Tube Station. We always stop there for lunch, travelling through from the east of UK, but this time we made a trip there as some friends who were locals wanted to meet up for a dim sum lunch for their annual get together. For a local Peking, Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine, its food is fresh, and the quality and taste is on par with its counterpart in Chinatown in the West End. You can get the usual fare and more. Be adventurous and you will not be disappointed. The space is comfortable and feels homely. The friendly staff, especially the lady owner loves to chat and gossip with the numerous regulars. Recently it has been renovated and modernised, but it has not lost it's local Chinese restaurant charm. Well worth making a trip or stopping when passing through Gant's Hill. If driving, they have car parking at the back, which you need to display a permit, obtained from the restaurant.

With a decor that transports you to another corner of the world - with lush greenery and tiny antiques everywhere, the oriental feel is most definitely delivered to it's best! As it was New Years, they had a host of singers doing covers of classic party tracks to get everyone in the mood although there wasn't an ounce of the rowdiness there usually is in restaurants on NY. If you wanted to avoid all the buzz (as we did; boring, old hags - I know! It was an off year!) there was alternative seating, just as beautiful but a little hidden away from the centre. The food was lovely - with some of my favourite chinese dishes on the menu including manchurian chicken and seasame prawn toast. The service was surprisingly quick for New Years Eve - with staff who were polite, patient and efficient. A great selection of non-alcoholic cocktails were also available from the bar...which were a delight for us; the ONLY three sober girls there! Lovely.

We hadn't had a take-away for months due to the pandemic and closure of restaurants and take-away…read moreoutlets. At last, some were delivering except out favourite Chinese outlet. We found another one, online, and decided to give it a try. We ordered our usual dishes and wondered if The China Village would come up to our usual expectations. Delivery was good as it arrived within 5 minutes of our requested time. The delivery driver followed guidelines by leaving the bag on the doorstep, rang the bell and stepped back. Re-assuring for us in the vulnerable category. OK, down to the food. As I said we ordered the same as usual so a comparison with our usual 4 star service would be reasonable. Chicken satay, very watery sauce with very little peanut flavour but chicken tasty. Rice and noodles don't vary from place to place. Chicken balls were a real PLUS. Not balls but strips in a very light batter. Delicious. Sweet and sour sauce, once again, the same anywhere. Chicken chop suey, great with wonderful well cooked, white chicken pieces. Deep fried chilli beef, once again delicious. Szechuan chilli beef, a little disappointing. Sauce very liquid and certainly not very chilli. However, the whole meal was enjoyable. Food price was similar to our other outlet but this was increased by the delivery charge. Even though the restaurant is closer they charge whereas our other outlet does not charge for deliveries within 3 miles and over £15 order. So a slight down on that one. Free prawn crackers, a plus. Also, two fortune cookies, a nice touch. Taking everything into account I would say The China Village is about half a star lower than our usual restaurant but......I'll stick with 4 stars.
