I grew up on this place. I can still remember my nostrils being filled with the smell of freshly baked bread on a Sunday.
I went back recently during the week to find some of the magic has fizzled. All the bread was stuffed into plastic bags.. The selection was limited and the girl behind the counter was more focused on singing what the teens sing as opposed to good customer service.
I went back on a weekend and things were a little more like the old days. The selection was great, the staff was engaged (greeting regulars and such) and the bread was out of the bags and on the shelves, filling the store with that old school scent.
I guess the most important thing is the bread itself. The dark rye is irreplaceable and the french stick makes the best bread pudding. read more
