On a recent visit, some of the plants were looking a little rough, including the salvias I bought, but with the recent heatwave, it's no wonder some plants aren't looking their best. The guys are helpful if you need hay or bags of garden soil loaded and someone always asks if you need help, when they see you browsing the plant aisles. They have a good variety of healthy plants. although the bougainvillea selection was way down, which is why I stopped by on this visit. Prices are mostly reasonable and plants I've bought at this garden center have done well. The store has a covered area and sun area, so you can see plant requirements at a glance. Gardening in zone 10 can be a challenge, but Golden Gate Nursery has you covered. read more

I love, love, love this place! George and his whole staff are just as friendly and helpful as can be. Very knowledgeable of all things plant, tree, flower, herb, and especially horse related. This has been my go-to spot for almost 30 years! Very competitive pricing, maybe a touch higher on some things, BUT... Giant Milkweed sprayed with pesticides!!! I purchased 2 giant milkweed plants and was told by 2 people that the supplier does not spray them however when I brought them home and placed caterpillars on the plant, several emitted slimy green discharge then died. This is an indication that the plants were sprayed with pesticides. When I called to explain what happened I was told we don't spray. I said perhaps you don't but these new plants you just received have been sprayed and several caterpillars died after being on the plants for 1 day. They never offered to refund my money so guess what? I'll never purchase plants from this nursery again. Know your supplier and don't lie to people and if the plant is found to have pesticides refund the customer. read more

Disappointed. I should have paid attention to previous reviews calling out the owner of this place! The nursery was worthwhile, but the guy who owns the nursery needs to work on his people skills. Treating customers who purchased thousands of dollars of plants like garbage, I can only imagine how he treats his employees. A few of the shrubs we had delivered looked as though they were the runts of the group they had on their property. When we called to check and see if we could bring the runts back to exchange them for healthy plants, we were basically told to go climb a tree and that we should have picked out the specific plants we wanted while we were on the property. The only problem is..., when we were at the nursery, we were told that we couldn't pick the exact individual plants we wanted and that they'd make sure to select the "best" of what they had. You'd think that calling back for a simple exchange the very same day of delivery wouldn't lead to a blowup on the owner's behalf. Not like we tried to swindle him out of healthy plants weeks down the road. Oh well, dude must need a hug or something. read more

The other day I drove past this nursery and decided to check it out in the hopes that they would have some bonsai. While they did have a beautiful desert rose there weren't too many other options. The rest of the nursery was great though. I walked up and down the rows checking out their wide variety of floral options. The rows were interspersed with interesting pots and unique sculptures. The staff was friendly and offered advice on how to best take care of my current ailing plants. I definitely plan on stopping in before I start my next yard project. read more

This nursery also has a good selection of ornamentals, ground covers, shrubs, palm, etc., everything you need to have a beautiful garden in zones 9 & 10/11. I really wanted to give this nursery five stars. It's the closest to us and the customer service is great. I think the prices are a little bit high but the plants are unique and healthy. I went ahead and purchased over $300 worth of landscaping there. Unfortunately five of my tall grasses have died in a few short weeks and they are still in the original pots; watered more than occasionally besides the rain. When I found this morning they said that they do not have an exchange policy for plants that have died. I am highly disappointed and surprised. Every other nursery I've ever purchased from including the big box will happily replace. This is honestly the first time I've ever had to replace plants. And now I have to pay for them again. My green thumb loves this place and so does my pup, Champ Bailey. They are very helpful, know much about plants and have a huge selection of healthy plants. I have recently been on a bromeliad kick and have been able to find a few here. Healthier than HD or Lowes and good sizes. Unfortunately, not a lot of them at the time I visited the nursery. Their annuals are gorgeous, blooming beautifully and bountiful. Every time I have visited Golden Gate Nursery, everyone on staff has been more than ready to help me with my gardening needs. I am compelled to vent about Golden Gate Nursery, about something that should be minor but it didn't turn out that way. I went in today to buy some Blue dog food and impulsively bought this large Piggy(pig) bank that you must break when filled. It was really a great gift. The minor problem that turned into a major issue ??????? A stupid price sticker we all find on store items except I worked on this sticker for 30 minutes while using everything I could find in the house, including Goo Gone. When I finally removed it all, it left a permanent square sticker mark along with some small spots of the first layer of the pig that wore off trying to remove this sticker. Yes, silly right?
