Chinatown seems to be expanding northwards with quite a few new oriental restaurants and grocery shops spilling onto Shaftesbury Avenue and into Soho. Some of the restaurants look to be trying to draw in the tourists but Golden Gate is authentically for the local population.
Not as big as Gerrard street stalwarts like Loong Fung or Loon Moon, nevertheless, there is a nice selection of goods over 3 floors. I bought some of my favourite Prima Taste curry pastes.
There is a unique feature in this Chinese supermarket - a Chinese sweet pick and mix! These include mainly sweets like White Rabbit brand sweets but also dried mango slices. It's located on the basement level. Good way to try a variety of different sweets before committing to buying a big packet.
The shop acually extends out of the back into the alleyway where you'll find their selection of fresh vegetables and shellfish in aerated tanks. read more
