I swear everytime I've gone into a fish place recently they've all been out of catfish, but luckily…read morenot today! This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.

This was our first time coming here while in the Chicagoland area. Our friend who lives here…read moresuggested this place. It's in a shopping center with plenty of parking. The ambiance is casual with great service and great attitudes. It is a very clean establishment. We were well taken care of by our server. The place stayed busy but the food was just good and lacked seasonings. Maybe it is just a Texas thing. We each ordered our own bag with a variety of items upon likes. I personally ordered the shrimp, crawfish, sausage, corn and potatoes in a spicy sauce that was not spicy at all and lacked flavor even though I ordered the 3 spice hot sauce. The headless shrimp were good sized and cleaned. The crawfish were mixed sized. Again, it lacked flavor. The potatoes were good and the corn was spicy, burned the lips. Another person in our party ordered a little bit of everything. He enjoyed everything and there was plenty of leftovers from the three bags for him to take home. We also ordered the garlic shrimp noodles which were ok after eating so much boiled seafood. The sweet potato fries were delicious and I recommend them. The sweet tea was great and we were surprised they even had sweet tea. I would try it again but it is a bit high. We spent $250 on a party of three.

This is my go to seafood boil because they have specials during the week and weekend. I usually get the highest level of shove and to me it's not as spicy but I love spice. The place is spacious for groups.

The hostess was insightful and inviting, like eating at someone's house who loves you. Outside of all of that the Mediterranean lamb was phenomenal. As someone who has eaten lamb in the Middle East this was delightful, with the rice and flavorful kale it's a wonderful bite full. Large serving sizes...and that grilled pound cake lawd

Music is pretty loud in this small space. We decided on the 3 entrees for 69.00 with a glass of wine. We chose the pepper steak, smothered chicken, orange chicken, catfish and spaghetti, and the bbq catfish. Overall the food was ok., The bbq fish was a little to fishy and the smothered chicken was heavily salted. The star of our 6 dishes was the fried piece of catfish. The food came out quickly but nothing was piping hot. The server was OK as well, he did exactly what we expect of a server nothing more nothing less. I will say next time I would take the drive to the West side location, to me the food choices are better as well as the service.

this place back in the day was the place to go , but now ,not so much ,i would never eat here again…read more, never order catfish fillets because they are substituting it for tilapia instead , and think that you are crazy and don't know the difference, i order 20 pieces of catfish fillet pay $50.70 and when I got home, everyone was saying it was tilapia. I ate a piece and they were right I called them and they did not want to honor or give me the difference in price refunded , instead they wanted to give us a different smaller order to me that is saying you're guilty. Save your money. Do not waste your money here. They are going the cheaper route to get a profit now.

Walking in the place reaks of rotten fish which is a major red flag, especially on a freaking Tuesday (fresh fish for the week should've been delivered Sunday or Monday like with most restaurants.) They didn't have bass so I got some jack salmon. The salmon reaked of rotten fish as well. The taste was off too and my stomach turned within 10 minutes after eating. Definitely serving spoiled fish to people which is what other reviewers have complained about. No bread either. The breading on the fish is hardly seasoned. No surprise when you look up their health scores they failed inspection in the past for unclean facilities and not even having proper plumbing as latest as November 2024. They've somehow either outright failed or barely passed as long as certain conditions were to be met 13 out of 27 times over the years which is crazy. Stay away!
