I'd like to start by saying I love reading bad reviews and then going to these places to see if it's accurate or not. Abdul was absolutely incredible. Very sweet. Very kind. I told him I wasn't trying to spend a whole lot of money right now and that I was looking for something to roll with, and he hooked me up with some new flavors that just came in and then to top it all off I almost left my phone and he caught my attention as I was leaving. Go to the cheese counter and take a look if you don't believe me but the cheese in the fridge the dude used to make sandwiches has a fat mold spot growing on it. I was there Saturday to get a sandwich to go since I found this place online and I'm glad he wasn't making sandwiches yet because this place was disgusting and super unsanitary. Golden Eagle market is great if you're trying to find varieties of booze however for someone like me who was trying to find food options, this place was not ideal. They did offer a couple essential items crackers, cookies, juices etc but not specific brands. I did see beer, liquor, and wines in the coolers. Additionally they had milk, vitamin water, Gatorade, orange juice and other drink options as well. This place is owned by a family which is great if you want to shop local and help out the community. They also have an $8 minimum on credit cards or .75cent fee, so make sure you bring cash if you're not spending that much. read more

I have been cat called multiple times by the man at the register. Asked about my ethnicity and then proceeded to say he liked those type of women. He got very personal. Asking where I worked. I should have left after it was clear that this was an overpriced place, but i figured the convenience of it being on my way was worth it. First price on a 24oz Modelo was $4.49. I hesitated when I thought I saw Corona was cheaper. It was the same. Except I somehow paid $5.53 for it. Also, the counter guy was very arrogant, and made me show him my ID a second time. Sam, great owner/operator of Golden Eagle Market, I wish all of San Francisco could have such a stand-up guy as you for their Corner Store man. Except for The Marina, natch. They can collectively blow me in a PM. Unless you are reading this review from The Marina, in which case, you are the exception to the rule and obviously The Quality. [SF/X; Never Stop (Discotheque Mix), Echo And The Bunnymen] I used to sit for my exes cats*. One time I made my Space Shuttle Nachos (invented by me with help from NASA) because the kittens and I were hunkering down for some quality time. None of that "feed 'em and toss the litter if you can smell it from down the block crap". Some Vernor's that I'd picked up at Golden Eagle, the kitties, a pile of new comics and nachos...I was totally set for a castle siege. And it felt like Sam, the owner of Golden Eagle was like my Honorary Cat-Sitter. He is one of the few Vernor's Ginger Ale stockists in greater SF, and I know of nearly them all. Huge inventory, average prices, don't get the sandwiches, in-store ATM, open late...the customer is pretty much king. GEM is a borderline freak magnet for the hours it keeps and being right on the hub of the Valencia Corridor. Vernor's is also Sam's favorite Ginger Ale, but he drinks the Diet because he's diabetic. How do I know this? The man is clearly open-hearted, just like me. Dear The Marina, I don't even wish diabetes on you, that's how open we're talking here. So gobble that SKOR bar down Marina. I've heard it's like a "classier Heath". Sam's brother Joe owns the corner store up 20th. He's a mensch too. But that's another Corner Store for another day. If it's your corner store, sure, you're gonna be biased. You're gonna see things that Friday nighters don't, as they stop in for Camel Lights, condoms, or maybe a lime. But Sam's Club (as an old roommate called Golden Eagle, owing to the awesomeness of its owner, Sam) goes above and beyond the basic call of the corner store. Sure, spotting me a quarter here, a nickel there, it's standard fare. But Sam actually orders ice cream, just for me. He tells me about new products I might like (much as an online service like Yelp), he gives my dog a treat even when I forget I have her with me (dog owners will know what I mean), and, best of all, he chats you up with meaningful, fun conversation. Our topics over the years have ranged from the political to the personal, from citywide events to local neighborhood business. The store itself stocks a nice beer and wine selection, given its diminutive size. And it's open well into the wee hours (closes at 2 a.m., I think). I've been so lucky to have Sam close by. It's seriously something I think about when I'm bummed on the hood, and I resort to pro/con lists. Thanks, Sam! read more

Sam welcomed me when I moved into the neighborhood. He's the kind of stand-up guy you want: The guy who orders shit if you ask for it. The kind of guy (and wife, and son) who talk about how much they love the 'hood, they welcome you to it, they remember your face, and they order more wine. They tell you about burning tires for religious festivals on the slopes of the mountains in Jordan. They chase f*cktards out who leer at women. And, for god's sake, then have a Ye Olde Pink iMac. Agreed. It's all about Sam. When I first met him with the women who became my wife five years later, I knew I was meeting 'the Man' on the block. Sam not only runs one of the most well inventoried liquor/convenience stores I have ever seen (he stocks all the ingredients for my families secret super fudge recipe), but he also cares sincerely for the people who live in the neighborhood. I live "upstairs" from the Golden Eagle and stop in at least once a day for 1.) ATM 2.) forgotten, last minute ingredients 3.) a coke because I am hungover 4.) gum (they have an excellent selection of Trident, my fave) 5.) dish soap/ paper towels 6.) fair prices. Sam, the owner, loves to make sure he's cheaper than the other corner stores. This place is truly a family affair. You feel like you are walking into a living room at times with the tv going, kids running around, and Sam and Co. sitting in chairs gossiping about other locals, family members, etc. read more

Went here for the Philly cheesesteak and it was actually pretty good. It'll beat any Great Steak phillycheese that you would get in the mall. BUT, there's some things that are wrong about this place. First of, the place reeks of tobacco smoke. They smoke inside of the place which means their masks are definitely off as they work on the food. Second, I think I was targeted for a bit of price gouging. The sandwich was 7-8 inches and he charged a whopping 11 dollars for the sandwich. It's pretty shady cause when you walk in there are no prices written anywhere. I guess I walked in looking like some young, tech dude so I fit the bill for the overpriced hipster price??? I paid for it reluctantly but I should have asked how much it was to begin with. I ordered fries with it which is the same size as a McDonalds kids meal size and it cost 4 dollars for just the fries. It's highway robbery. Not coming back. For a community bodega, it's not really FOR the community. There's a deli down the road that sells their sandwiches for just 4 bucks; how it should be. Just fix your pricing and maybe you can get more customers. read more

This convenience store is all about the owner, Sam. If you buy the same kind of cigarette twice, he knows your face and your brand. Large wine selection for a store whose typical customer is buying a '40'. Not the best selection or the best prices, but personal service and a friendly, sincere interest in you personally go leagues. A very comfy store, a little run down at the edges but full of character and looked over by the benevolent patriarch. If 'Welcome Back, Kotter' was a corner store, this'd be it. read more

As I was paying for an "empowerment mint" flavored Yerba Mate drink (because they'd run out of the "Pure Mind" flavor which I prefer), I suddenly recognized that I spend a significant amount of money at this particular liquor store in the course of a month. I had nothing more exciting to do with my evening, so I did a little math, involving even some (very basic) algebra, and I calculated that I spend even more here on a monthly basis than I do on my mobile phone bill. I've deluded myself into believing that these Yerba Mate drinks are absolutely necessary for my health...if I don't have one, I simply can't get through the day. They cost $2.75 each. I also sometimes come for a small "personal sized" bottle of whiskey, and chug it down on my way to the discotheque "to avoid having to spend excessive amounts at the bar," and whether or not it has the intended consequence is beside the point (it generally doesn't), because when you also consider that I will sometimes buy a snack...a little pint ice cream for instance, or some cashews, or a Popsicle, or a bag of crackers...it all adds up to occupying a significant fraction of my dispensable income. And there's a reason I do it at Golden Eagle Market. The reason is simple: there simply is no better alternative within a two block radius of my home... The selection of snacks and Popsicle flavors at the the other places can't compete. I walk out of my way--a full block out of my way!--to go to Golden Eagle Market, even though there's a store that's a little closer. And the service is wonderful. There's a friendly man behind the counter who even refers to me by name every time I walk in. I never introduced myself to him, but he must have read my name on a card, and he always greets me and asks me how my day is going. He cares for my health as well--recently while I was very conspicuously limping due to a cut on my heel (all better now, thank goodness), he asked me what happened, and of course it made me feel better that people noticed and cared. What a pal! It works to produce a wonderful sense of belonging. And when I have people visiting from out of town and they notice his recognition, it always gives them an idea that I'm more of figure around town than I am, which of course I take advantage of, "Hah! Yes everyone knows me around here...can't avoid it really... Takes me hours to get anywhere in this town--well because I have stop and say hello to ten people at every intersection!" Another important thing to point out is that it stays open later than any other liquor store in the area. It's usually still open when I'm stumbling home from the discotheque, and so the staff here has seen me in all sorts of conditions! The point is: if you're new to the neighborhood and you're trying to make the important choice of which liquor store to become loyal to, there should be no complication. I was surprised to see so many good reviews. I went to this corner market once. The guy behind the counter seemed to be severely lacking customer service skills. I was irritated that there was an $8 minimum purchase to use a card. And I was even more irritated that when he swiped my card he said it didn't go through because "the phone line was open." Are they still in the 90's?? So he made me stand around and wait so he could swipe my card a second time. After I signed for my purchase I was just relieved to leave. But about a week later I checked my credit card bill and discovered I was actually charged TWICE for my purchase! I am definitely never returning to this market. read more
