They close between lunch and dinner (closed from 14:00-18:00), and after multiple attempts I finally made it here when they were open. A variety of familiar dishes are served and everything is made with love and care. I saw a number of Japanese families come here for dinner. We had the tonkotsu ramen and the Kyoto shoyu ramen with gyoza. Both ramens were tasty and flavored well. In the tonkotsu ramen you could see the globs of delicious fat that are signature of true pork bone soup and it was rich in flavor. The Kyoto ramen is a lighter soup with thinner noodles and super tasty. The gyozas were perfectly made and cooked. Sadly, they were vegetable only but so delicious. Overall, solidly good food that I would love to have every day. Food: 5/5 Delicious home-cooked Japanese food. Atmosphere: 4/5 It has an open kitchen so it feels like sitting in someone's dining room. There are bookcases filled with Japanese books all around. Service: 4/5 Servers were polite and friendly. Value: 3/5 Ramen was around ~12 euros, so prices were average.

Perhaps it's well suited to Japanese people but not for the general population who expect something from a Japanese restaurant. No sushi no tepanyaki style cooking! Was very average and utterly disappointing for a sushi lover. Had to comeback without dinner :( Overly priced! Sake is just 16 euros which should be 3.50 realistically. Waitress's don't speak any English nor Dutch so hard to explain what you want or what's their fav dish. Menu is in Japanese with bad English translations. What the heck is "tasted beef"??? Very expensive for a Japanese place. Hmm not again.

This place has good raamen! In fact, it's the only place in Noord-Holland (since it's just outside…read moreof Amstelveen, in Uithoorn) where they have good raamen! The first time I went here the miso broth was on the salty side. Last time it was perfect. The noodles are traditional Japanese raamen noodles, the broth is based on chicken and not pork, they have both shoyu and miso broths and they even offer a lunch menu deal with a slightly smaller sized bowl of raamen with cha shu (roasted pork) and a side of rice, some pork gyoza and a small salad. All that for €12 (check the pictures). This place is NOT operated by Chinese people like nearly all Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam! No, this place is operated by Japanese people who actually know what they're doing. They are open from 12-2 PM for lunch and I've only been here for lunch and not yet for dinner so I cannot say much about that. It's not a huge place but it's always filled with actually Japanese people and the occasional Korean people. This should mean a lot because it indicates that Japanese people approve of this place! I recently decided to not eat pork anymore, so finding the right raamen last time proved a bit lacking in choice. There seemed to be two raamen that didn't have pork but the one I ordered deceived me! I ordered the raamen called "spicy leek" (€11). No mention of pork or any other protein but the fact that all broth is based on chicken. It didn't come with a few slices of roasted pork. Instead it came with small chunks of lean roasted pork sprinkled all over my bowl. Not a problem since I don't refrain from eating pork based on religious reasons so my food was not "tainted" in my eyes. I just removed the pork, gave it to my happy carnivorous friend and everyone was happy again! Just good to know for all ya'll health conscious people who want to eat here. Tell them "no pork", beforehand. If I don't feel like traveling all the way to Dusseldorf for a decent bowl of raamen, I'll just come here again next time! Definitely good raamen and only 15-20 minutes away from Amsterdam by motorbike/car.

I've been in Amsterdam for 6 weeks now and I haven't had any Asian food (I've had KBBQ, Sichuan, pho, Indonesian, "asian", and boba LOL) that's made me say "wow!" This is the first place that I can say is as good as what I'm used to in Los Angeles. I had the tekka-don, which is marinated sashimi tuna over rice -- the fish was fresh and the rice was the correct temperature. There was a light, sweet soy coating the whole thing. 4/5 stars. I also ordered some yakitori -- the chicken leg meat with spring onions was nothing short of relevatory. The pork belly yakitori I ordered was pretty amazing too. The place is difficult to find -- it's tucked into a hidden corner of the mall but it's worth searching for.

There are grills at the tables and you cook your own food. I recommend you visit the other Tanuki, as this one was a disappointment. Food: 2/5 I'm pretty sensitive to salt but even the other people I ate with found the meat to be too salty. Rumor has it that restaurants with not so fresh meat salt their food heavily to preserve it for longer... We had various types of chicken and pork, and most of it was mediocre. The pork neck was very tasty but it was the only one out of 7 meats. Service: 3/5 The waitstaff was very polite and attentive. Atmosphere: 4/5 They did a really good job with the renovation, the restaurant is beautiful. It is a nice mixture of modern and traditional Japanese decor. They even have those adorable booths where you need to take your shoes off. However, you can't eat atmosphere. Value: 2/5 Each 100g of meat was about 5 euros, which adds up... in the end, we decided to finish what we ordered and then finish our meal at McDonalds.
