I've been in Amsterdam for 6 weeks now and I haven't had any Asian food (I've had KBBQ, Sichuan, pho, Indonesian, "asian", and boba LOL) that's made me say "wow!" This is the first place that I can say is as good as what I'm used to in Los Angeles. I had the tekka-don, which is marinated sashimi tuna over rice -- the fish was fresh and the rice was the correct temperature. There was a light, sweet soy coating the whole thing. 4/5 stars. I also ordered some yakitori -- the chicken leg meat with spring onions was nothing short of relevatory. The pork belly yakitori I ordered was pretty amazing too. The place is difficult to find -- it's tucked into a hidden corner of the mall but it's worth searching for.

Tanuki has undergone a major renovation recently - the old Tanuki has moved to Gelderlandplein and…read morethe Tanuki here is more a Asian BBQ restaurant. There are grills at the tables and you cook your own food. I recommend you visit the other Tanuki, as this one was a disappointment. Food: 2/5 I'm pretty sensitive to salt but even the other people I ate with found the meat to be too salty. Rumor has it that restaurants with not so fresh meat salt their food heavily to preserve it for longer... We had various types of chicken and pork, and most of it was mediocre. The pork neck was very tasty but it was the only one out of 7 meats. Service: 3/5 The waitstaff was very polite and attentive. Atmosphere: 4/5 They did a really good job with the renovation, the restaurant is beautiful. It is a nice mixture of modern and traditional Japanese decor. They even have those adorable booths where you need to take your shoes off. However, you can't eat atmosphere. Value: 2/5 Each 100g of meat was about 5 euros, which adds up... in the end, we decided to finish what we ordered and then finish our meal at McDonalds.

Kaiko - Loved how he cut the nigiri in half. Great for sharing.

The interior is very quite small and no-frills but the service and especially the food was to die for. The prices reflect that as you may see but if you want to splurge once in a while or for a nice occasion Kaiko is the place. We were really sure what to order so my girlfriend got the sashimi plate and I ordered the sushi set, the big one whichever that was. We even added a few appetizers because we weren't sure what was going to come out and an extra deal, since it's my favorites and it didn't show up in the sushi set. Just really the freshest sushi either of us have had, with perfectly cut pieces and laid out beautifully. We also ordered a few bottles of sake which just were randomly chosen. When she brought them out in these strange square serving bowls she told us to salt the rim. Nothing we had really done before but it complemented the sake nicely. We had a lot of funny things which came out of our mouths that night while the delicious food was going in... After trying the omelette sushi, "every other egg in the world is bullshit". When seeing that they made to go orders, "it's like putting gold into Styrofoam".

I love sushi. And I've had lots of sushi over the course of my life in different states, cities and…read morecountries. Kaiko is definitely top notch (at least in Amsterdam standard). Their nigiri, sashimi, makis are all great. They are fresh, and comes in in good sized portions. However, Kaiko's problem is its server. The lady who works there is absolutely horrifying. She is always mono-toned and I swear I have never seen her smile. Nope, not even once. Not only that, it is practically impossible to make reservations via phone. Not because Kaiko is always full, it's because the lady can't or doesn't want to do her job. When I called to make a reservation one day, she literally said "sorry, fully booked" and hung up. I called back and asked for next availability and it took a good 20 minutes trying to figure out when I can make the damn reservation - I basically had to ask her day by day. Her english is absolutely horrible, and her Dutch is mediocre - maybe she's okay in Japanese, who knows. OR maybe....she just doesn't care and has absolutely zero regards to Kaiko's customers. Even though Kaiko's sushi is great, her attitude totally ruins the whole dining experience. If she's so unhappy and miserable to be working and serving there (from the looks of it), she should probably look for another occupation.
