My husband had been seeing Dr. Steven Kaplan for several years for Barrett's Esophagus which is a…read morepre-cancerous condition. While he did the required endoscopies he NEVER prescribed any protonix or placed him on a special GERD diet. Shame on us for not doing our research but we were told that Dr. Kaplan is head of the gastro dept. at Aventura Hospital and has a good reputation so we trusted him. Fast Forward to March 2017 and the biopsies from the endoscopy showed that he now has Esophageal cancer. He referred us to his associate Dr. Kasmin who comes in from NY once a week to do a surgical procedure through an endoscopy tube to "scoop" out the tumor. Now we started researching this procedure and learned that a PET scan and ultrasound should be performed to determine the size of the tumor. When we asked Dr. Kasmin about this, he said it wasn't necessary at this time. We agreed to have the procedure and went to Aventura Hospital outpatient. Within 30 minutes Dr. Kasmin came out and said there was too much inflammation from the biopsies and he couldn't remove the tumor. He said that he couldn't do an ultrasound since Aventura Hospital doesn't have the equipment he needs for it. REALLY? So why was it done there instead of at Boca where he did have what he needed for a better diagnosis. Why is Dr, Kaplan referring us to a doctor that does a We never received a follow up phone call from Dr Kaplan to discuss the next step. He seems that he just moved on to other patients. How, ethically, can a doctor not follow up with his patient who had a life threatening cancer? What is his medical obligation to assure that a patient is taking medical steps for treatment? Apparently he didn't care, We of course at this point had no intentions of using any doctor here. Within 4 days we had an appt. at Johns Hopkins for an evaluation and treatment. After extensive research it appears that once Barrett's is diagnosed there is a protocol for preventive treatment that should have been given by Dr.Kaplan. Steve is now facing an esophagectomy which is a horrific procedure that changes your life forever. Since Dr. Kaplan doesn't carry any personal medical malpractice insurance, attorneys won't take this case. So here we have a situation of a cancer that might have been prevented had my husband been given the proper medical care since 2011. So use this doctor at your own risk.

He may be knowledgeable with his medicine but he is the most uncaring doctor I've seen in my 69 years . I was a patient in this hospital with severe pain in my stomach and after he did a colonoscopy,I was diagnoed with Colitis or Crohns disease. It was not very clear as to which one because he did not communicate with me very well. I only knew what I knew from the reports that I received upon discharge. I was there for about 7 days and he maybe came by 4 times. He never did a physical exam and only passed thru for about 30 seconds and I mean this quite literally.. He was very condescending and never showed interest in my constant telling him that I couldnt eat and how food would hurt my stomach. After about the 4th day he started saying that I needed to go home. I was in so much pain until the nurse heard me say I wanted to die. That's how bad this Colitis is. If anyone ever heard or experienced this diseas would know this is no joke. I ended up on suicide watch and a psychiatric evaluation to determine if I was in fact suicidal. I never saw Dr. Steven Kaplan afer that day he said I need to go home. I told my daughter about the plan to send me home so sick. To make a long story short, she called him to plead the case and to find out why he thought this was appropriate. He told her that's it. A couple days later I went home sick as when I came in. Still couldn't eat and lost about 15 pounds. I was back in the hospital 5 weeks later, sicker. I ended up with his nasty unethical behind. He never examined me again and was anxious to send me home. This time on the 3rd day he started his crap that I dont need to be there. He went on to say that I am one of the reasons the insurance companies are going broke. Can u believe this man. He act as if I caused myself to have this nasty, painful illness. As I write this note I am suffering. Dr. Steven Kaplan in Aventura Fla. and I understand he practices on Alton Rd ,Miami Bch Fl as well is the most condescending, unethical, think he's God doctor I've ever encountered. He cares nothing for the patient. He works for the insurance companies folks. Just know that if you go to see him, he's a phony. He's no good with bedside manners. I dont believe I'm the 1st patient he's mistreated. There's a lot to the story that will make you lose trust in doctors of today. They all work for the insurance companies. They care less how you feel. That's why they don't bother to examine you when you're in the hospital. They just pass thru for 30 seconds or so and chart that you're better each day. Even thou you're sick as a dog. They already know that they will be discharging you in 3 to 4 days usually. Unless of course you're in a critical care unit. They lie and say you are better even if you're bleeding rectally like I was.I know this because when I saw the discharge note it stated that I left the hospital improved and this was not true. I was not eating and the weight lost proves it. They dont want to hear it. Dr Steven Kaplan is one of that type. Be aware of this gastric doctor by the name of Steven Kaplan. He cares nothing for his patients. It appears as thou he is guarding the wealthy insurance company's pockets. I make these statements in truth, not to lie about this doctor. So be careful folks as you will be sent home prematurely and could die prematurely with doctors like I've described.

I got an appointment fairly quickly after my PCP ordered me to see one, which was great. My first visit was with Dr. Angel Veloso, who was so nice. It can be nerve wracking to think something is wrong with you, but he helped keep me calm and explained all the things that could be going on. I was sent to get a procedure done, and that was with Dr. Christian Andrade. I am not great with medical things, so the thought of anesthesia was freaking me out. However, Dr. Andrade was great at assuring me I would be fine, and also great at explaining everything that went on during and after my procedure. If you're in need of a gastroenterologist, I would recommend GastroMed because they are friendly, efficient, and most importantly great when being met by a nervous patient with 10001 questions. It's nice to have a doctor that you feel is invested in your health concerns and takes the time to help you understand. The staff is super friendly too.
