Manoir de Mathan - Plentiful roses in the lovely garden.

The…read moresetting and location are wonderful and the rooms are gorgeously appointed to give one the full French country atmosphere. We were there is early June and the gardens were in full bloom...just stunning. The location makes this a great location to use as a base of operations for the Normandy area. Besides Bayeux, you are ten minutes from the coast and less than 30 from Caen. We stayed there four nights and covered the area...including a two hour (each way) excursion to Mont St. Michel. The Manoir has a restaurant which we tried one night and found very 'hit or miss'. Several of the dishes (the steak and the duck) were quite nice. Several were average and a couple (a salmon appetizer and an impressive LOOKING puff-pastry) were total strike-outs. They deal with a large number of guests and may be trying to maintain too large a menu. So after the first night, we sought out other options in the area...of which there is no lack. They also offer a very nice full breakfast option, which we passed, preferring to drive five minutes to nearby Crepon for fresh Croissants and cappuccinos. The staff of the Manoir was impeccably friendly and concerned. When one of our party fell ill, they were very concerned. However, the were not always helpful. In their efforts to promote their own restaurant, they were determinedly silent when asked for other dining recommendations. Also, when I got a parking ticket, they gave incorrect information how I could go about paying the fine. None of this prevented us from enjoying our stay there immensely. A truly lovely and memorable experience.

If you're looking for the "french" experience, warts and all then this hotel is for you. It looks…read morelike it hasn't been reviewed in three years, so here I go. Its location is good for touring all the normandy sites and museums. You have to have a car as there's nothing you can walk to. Its very charming and the grounds are beautiful. They have adequate parking, a tennis court and a playground. I definitely would not bring children here as the rooms are small and there are lots of uneven stone stairs. They speak limited english at reception and none in the bar and restaurant. We arrived a few hours before checkin and thought we could have lunch at the restaurant as other people were there. But no they said they were not serving lunch but we could purchase a charcuterie plate. That charcuterie was the best thing about our stay! Fresh bread, meat and cheese with dried fruits and butter. I asked about dinner reservations for that night and they said no, they were full. The restaurant basically caters to the locals and they don't accommodate their hotel guests at all. I felt like I was in Paris with how curt they were with us. We ended up only eating on the property for breakfast which was very good. The room was very small and theres no air conditioning or fan so I would not stay here in the summer. Its a very old stone building with thick walls so we were ok. There was one small window you could open but no screen. The bed was comfortable. Theres a safe but no frig. The bathroom was also very small but the tub was huge. Very clean rooms. I ordered room service one night and it was laughable. I ordered fried chicken with potatoes and vegetables (thats exactly how it was worded on the menu) what I got was a small bowl of soup. So don't bother with room service unless you order a charcuterie board. We bought a bottle of wine to drink and I had to ask at the bar for an opener, the bartender told me I had to drink it in my room! Ok just another instance on how off putting the staff is here. So in review, 1.not a great place for children or elderly people who may have mobility issues, 2. don't expect to get any food here unless you're French. And don't order room service 3. Look at the square footage of the room before you book it. 4. Bring your own shampoo, conditioner etc. 5.ask for extra towels as they skimp on them in the room. 6. Dont stay here in the summer heat. Picture of my "fried chicken" room service in pics.

You will definitely need a car to get to the property as well as for any touring you plan to do. It's about a 20 minute drive to Bayeux where most of the Normandy tours pick up/drop off. The restaurant is quite good as well - I thought the appetizer selection was especially outstanding!

They got to know us in just a couple days and made every restaurant reservation for us. Just off the lobby is a small bar that is well stocked and managed by the front desk. Seating there is comfortable. The breakfast is plentiful and excellent. As for the rooms ... we could not believe how spacious, comfortable, quiet and pleasant in terms of temperature they were. The beds were also excellent and the bathrooms spacious. We were totally blown away by the quality. To top it all off, the location is perfect. Just a few blocks from the city center, and as a result many restaurants. We never had to walk more than 10 minutes any evening for our dinner reservations. And, even the Bayeux Tapestry is just a few minute walk. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about his hotel in any way. If you are visiting Bayeux, stay here.

We paid 100 Euros for the dinner, but just beware that the drinks were not included. So, 2 red wines and 2 lemonade a ran out bill up another 30 Euros. The appetizers were good, but the main entree was only so-so for the price. The location is the main draw. The town is historic and visually appealing. The rooms in this establishment were very plain. It would not have mattered if we did not feel so unwelcome. Also, be aware that there is a climb to the rooms. Our room was 2 flights up, which may be a concern to those with "faulty" knees. Also, the free wifi was too weak to be useful! I recommend the museum in town. The tour guides are fantastic!

Touring the DDay Beaches? Wondering Where to Stay in Arromanches?…read moreWe did a lot of research before deciding where to launch our family's tour of the DDay Beaches. There were other options right on the water, which has its appeal, but hands down this proved to be what we'd hoped for in terms of local welcome and warmth. The hotel is immaculately kept with pride by a wonderful family committed to every detail. The rooms are simple, extremely clean and newly redone. Lovely starched linens and new, comfortable beds. Very accommodating of families/children. As for the meals, we were demi-pension, thus had both dinner and breakfast. Sophie, who co-runs the hotel with her husband, takes pride in every detail -- from the table settings to each of the generous courses. Her offerings are creative, delicious and purchased fresh based on the market daily. Enjoy the warm reception area and dining, where the proprietors will dote on you! This was the perfect point of departure for our tour (quick walk to the local DDay museum and impressive Arromanches coast, where an unbelievable artificial harbor was created by allied forces following their June 6th invasion ...). Enjoy!

We loved another day spent exploring the wonderful historical town of Bayeaux and its beautiful Cathedrel Notre Dame. We stayed in a spacious, modern, and comfortable room in the building that was once most likely a carriage house. A stream was right outside our door, and lovely flowers and trees dotted the property. We had an outdoor seating area in the back overlooking the tennis courts, and there was seating in spots around the property. Dinner was served in the main cheateu and was one of the best meals we ate in all of France. The desserts were like works of art and tasted absolutely amazing. Meals are charged to the room and paid for at check out which is so convenient. Service was fantastic and accomodating, and staff cheerfully arranged a taxi service for us a few times. Off the beaten path but within walking distance to train station. I would highly recommend if you are looking for peace, quiet, and the beauty of nature.

The Chateau location is great, center to everything. We had great time in their spacious duplex. This is relaxing experience.

Much of Bayeux was walkable from here, and driving to the American and British beaches was very manageable. You can see the entrance to the museum with the Bayeux Tapestry from their front door. Restaurants we planned to taxi to were walkable. The facility is a several century old mansion, totally renovated by the architect owner who has done everything first class. Our room was huge, everything was new, and everything worked. The staff was outstanding in their efforts to accommodate a couple Americans. Breakfast equaled the facility - in a formal dining room setting and with an extensive selection. I would recommend Hotel Tardif Noble Guesthouse to anyone, whether they're five star hotel people or campers.
