I would go so far to say that Going Underground is one of the best record stores in California. The selection is deep(!) with a lot of surprising rarer stuff up on the walls. As I was browsing I kept thinking to myself, "where did they get that", over and over. Also I appreciate all of the framed music posters and flyers hung up around the store. The entire store is like one big music history lesson. The prices are very fair and reasonable for what they have. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. read more

This is an awesome shop - I love the cool time warp in the store's front windows, and the records inside are clean and easy to sort through by artist. Most importantly, the staff is friendly, easy to work with and you know you're getting quality records at a reasonable price. As a lifelong city dweller and radio DJ these last twenty years, you have fantasies about running into a store like Going Underground. This store may be the single best independent shop in California. Sure, stores like Amoeba have a substantially large stock, but when you find a gem, it is priced by the book and then some. Going Underground was expertly put together, with a friendly staff, and a reggae LP selection which rivaled any store that I have been to on the west coast. That said, their jazz selection was not only substantial, but also triumphant in what they had in stock. Rock/punk was even more well represented as were LPs from any of the pioneers of the "Bakersfield Sound." I may seem overly effusive in my praise, but you rarely encounter a record shop that is as well collected, nicer staffed, and well priced. It is worth the two hour trip from Los Angeles to Going Underground. Also, hit the Woolworth's lunch counter down the street. Yep, they got it all. read more

I really like this place, great selection and fair prices. I always walk away wishing I could afford to pick up more ha. Yet, I don't always feel welcome. I know music can sometimes be an insular thing, but I often get monosyllabic answers and sideway glances. I feel like asking is my taste being judged lol. Definitely as good as it gets when it comes to record shops. My love & I discovered this gem of a shop, on our occasional Bakersfield rendezvous . Both being avid record collectors we had to find a shop on our first meet up . And did we get lucky finding this shop. A must visit every time we are in the area now. The selection is great, soul R&b, jazz ,blues, rock, country, reggae, Mex/latin. You name it there's a bit of it here. And also a superb section of 45s .Very easy to get lost in here . I head straight to the regional Mex and Latin section I always find great stuff there . And the pricing here is really good , witch is surprising with the way record prices are nowadays. The gentleman that runs this place is very fair with his prices. And he's always spinning great stuff for your listening pleasure as you dig. The selection of vintage record players & cases is always great, and also very reasonably priced. On our first visit we both walked out with nice stacks and vintage players. I almost feel like I don't want to tell anyone about this honey hole of a record shop lol but its so good you gotta check it out ! On my last visit the owner was giving away a vintage player, I still can't believe I got it for free. I never leave this shop empty handed, great shop to dig at ! Time for another visit ! read more

Was passing through Bakersfield and stopped it to browse. What a GREAT record store with a fantastic selection of Jazz and Blues. Lots of Blue Notes and Prestiges at fair prices and even a Carl Perkins on Dooto. I picked up the Big Walter Horton LP on Arhoolie at a really fair price. This place is a GEM!!! read more

This shop is a gem of a record store. If you are in to used lps there is a killer selection of all genres, and the prices are more than fair for the most part. It could take a solid day to get through everything if you don't fatigue so be prepared to spend at least a half a day. read more
