This stylish Japanese BBQ seems incongruous to its suburban surroundings. The decor, menu and…read moreservice all seem to belong to an uppity city restaurant. Not that I'm complaining because where it's situated is convenient for me to get to plus there's easy parking. Shinbashi has a $35 all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ which is always a popular option. I fyou go this route, make sure to try their fantastic wagyu and marble beef. However, my husband and I always splurge on their $99 Signature Selection for two. It includes these tasty additional extras like Bacon asparagus and Bacon rice cakes. There's also this buttery cheese, sweet potato dish which takes about twenty minutes to cook up on the BBQ but is worth the wait. The service here is great. They always remember to refill my green tea and there's this delicious complimentary soup which comes in a teapot that you can easily fill up on and ruin your dinner if you're not careful. If you live further afield, Shinbashi Yakiniku is definitely worth the drive out to Underwood.

Hidden away in Underwood near the Big Gun butcher, lives this Japanese BBQ place; Shinbashi. All…read moreyou can eat or a la carte (I recommend the latter), you won't leave empty stomached. Being a Japanese BBQ place you basically cook the meat on the hot plate in front of you and dip in delicious sauces before noming down. Staff are genuinely helpful. There's Japanese rice beer to match, though I didn't see how that was going to be consumed amongst the plethora of meats in front of me. Also good to know - the meat is delicious, because it is marbled with delicious fat. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Defs popular amongst the locals.. Or those who know its there. So man up, make the drive, and give this place a go :)

The restaurant was hopping (we made a reservation) with more people coming in at 12.30pm. There were 5 of us and 4 of us opted for the chirashi set, while my dad ordered the sashimi set. We also ordered tempura, chicken karaage, grilled squid and nasu miso (miso eggplant). Everything was good, especially the salted grilled squid (there is also teriyaki) and eggplant. The fish was very fresh and portions generous. Definitely a good spot for a lovely casual Japanese meal.

But we weren't the first people to arrive - the place filled up as soon as the doors opened! A large group had pre-ordered large Sashimi boats and the chef was busily preparing these when we sat down. They were stunning - a true piece of art! I ordered a Plum Wine which was delicious and sweet to start with. The menu is quite extensive, but is well organised and I think well priced for Japanese food. The Egg Omlette was the first to come out. It was quite a big serving and the egg was delicious and sweet. The Beef Tataki, which is seared beef that is still quite rare on the inside and cut into thin slices and served with a vinegar/soy dipping sauce - was absolutely to die for! The beef was so tender. The Spicy Tuna sushi rolls were very good - Tuna sashimi with a sauce. It wasn't as spicy as I had assumed, but still very nice. 6 pieces of sushi on the plate, with ginger and wasabi. We had ordered a dish that was Japanese Beef rolls with Vegetables. I can't remember the Japanese name of it, but dear lord, this was totally amazing. It was marinated beef slices that were in a thick sweet marinade/sauce. This is a must try dish! I had read a recommendation for the Nasu Dengaku - grilled eggplant with miso - and this was one of the highlights of the meal. The eggplant was cooked to perfection - the flesh so soft and creamy - and the miso on top was super tasty. You can eat the flesh and skin of the eggplant, it was so well cooked. Other people at my table ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and Chicken Katsu as their meals. Just remember to order a bowl of rice, as they don't come with rice automatically. The service was great at Hosokawa and the food was prepared and served very quickly. I can highly recommend this place for dinner, but you definitely need to book at weekends as it gets very busy!
