A few blocks from the Gloucester Street tube station (we walked it with our luggage, but YMMV) but off the main drag in a quiet residential part of the neighborhood, a little removed from all the big trendy hotels. There's a Waitrose grocery in the tube station, a great continental coffee shop, a used book store, a Pret A Manger, a Burger King, a chemist shop, a handful of pubs, really, everything you need two to four blocks away. Instead of a single building, Astons is a series of townhouses, and your apartment has an address as well as a room number. I love it because I like to feel more like a temporary local than a tourist. Then there's the price. We opted for the studio. Be warned, it is *tiny*. The bed and the table take up almost the entire room. BUT, it has a fantastic built in mini-kitchen closet sort of arrangement, with a fridge, a cooktop, a microwave and an electric kettle. We made meals in our room when we were hungry at weird times or just too whipped to think about where we could go. And all of that for about $100 a night. Hard to beat in London! We're the kind of travelers who want a clean, safe place to lay our head and stash our stuff because we want to be out and about seeing and doing. We're not looking for luxury, and that's not where we want to spend our money. Astons also offers one- and two-bedroom arrangements, but for the two of us, the studio was a perfect fit. Desk staff was friendly, particularly in the evenings when they gave us great pub recommendations. If you're looking for great value in a great location, you can't go wrong with Astons.

This isn't a sit-in-your-room-and-luxuriate hotel. However, I have to stress that we both liked it and would stay there again. They know what they're doing and they do it very well. It was quiet, conveniently located, near great restaurants, well taken care of, some good amenities, and a great price. The basket of packaged fruit, juice, and cookies every morning was perfect for tourists. We were also well taken care-of there. They held our luggage overnight when we went on a day trip to Bath. I left my tablet behind and they contacted me immediately and held it for a week until I was able to return to pick it up. The staff was pleasant, fun, and attentive. And again, great value. I'm looking at my credit card bill and I can't believe how little we spent on a week's worth of quality accommodations in London.

First, the good: The location was excellent for playing tourist. Very accessible by public transit and within walking distance of many sights. The showers had loads of hot water, and the shower head changed colors based on the temperature of the water.. very cool! Next, the meh: The complimentary breakfast. Lots of bread, deli meats and some fresh and canned fruits. Its there, and if it comes with your room, its fine.. but if asked to pay for it, you can find much better fare for less than the £10 they are asking. Oh, and if you want coffee that doesn't suck, you'll be charged £1 for it. Lastly, the bad: So noisy! Paper thin walls, godawful alarms sounding at 0400! Loud creaking and clanging coming from the ducts in the middle of the night! Our room came with two thin pillows and one thin blanket. No flat sheet, no extras of any sort hanging out on a closet shelf. We had to ask for more and were eventually provided with them, but yeah.. I expect more from hotels in this price point. Extra towels or a floor mat would have been nice in the bathroom too; it came stocked with two body towels and that is it. We also had to hunt down shampoo/body wash on our own, as our room was lacking it when we first checked in. Our room had one electric outlet (unless you count the shaver-only outlet in the bathroom - I don't) in the entire room. One. Housekeeping also doesn't knock before they come in.. which is awesome when you are standing there without any clothes on. I've definitely stayed in worse places, but I would not want to stay here again, and I would not recommend it to others unless they really don't care about things noise level, or not having to ask for things that should already be in the room.

The conference facilities were super and the staff very helpful. I found the hotel bedrooms rather small and basic though - so whilst ideal for business, if I was staying here for pleasure I might be a little diaspointed. But for local - this really is a handy and modern hotel with parking right next door!

At no point was any building work mentioned We arrived in due course, to find the walk from the tube station was a bit more than a short one (I had the blisters to prove it!!) and there was lots of building work taking place, the hallways where very dusty, and also the promised restaurant downstairs had changed hands and no longer offered a discount to hotel guests. The one positive thing about the place was the room was lovely, we had a 4 nights stay and I was happy to be in that room, it was nicely decorated, bright and airy, had all the facilities promised, and had a general nice feel about it, except for the shower, which was a liability waiting to happen! The shower was supposed to be a power shower with multiple nozzles etc, well it did have all that, but power was stretching the truth slightly, and none of the knobs had directions on them so you had no idea what worked which part of the shower and you spent most of the time crammed in to the corner trying to avoid either blistering hot water or shockingly cold, it took a lot of practise to suss it all out properly. We quickly found out on the first night that a lot of pigeons were roosting in a hole above our window, and pigeons don't seem to sleep, or at least don't shut up when sleeping, and we had a constant pigeon cooing sound all through the night, which without the use of the ear plugs we had bought, would have made for a very unsettled night as it was very loud and persistent. But earplugs didn't spare us from the noise that greeted us the next morning in the form of very loud drilling and hammering from an adjoining room from 8am every single day we where there, some times pre 8am, talking jack hammer sounds and brick drilling, that basically made our room vibrate. Again we had no warning that this was going to be taking place so was not prepared for it to happen, and the reason why we in London in the first place meant we were arriving back to our rooms very late in to the night and the last thing we needed was the early morning wake up call. On one occasion, we arrived back from being out around town (passing reception on our way up that was staffed) to get ready for our evening out, to find that the water was off, so we had no opportunity to shower or get clean before going out, and as many know, after spending the day in shops and riding on the tube, you need a shower and yet no one thought to inform us as we came in. As we came to leave, we did ask for a refund for at least part of the cost of staying there but was told we had to email our request in, which we duly did upon arriving home, and didn't receive a reply, we rang the place to be told to email a different address and the woman on the phone said she'd personally deal with it, but never did get back to us. Eventually we gave up trying to get any thing out of them. Overall, the room was nice to stay in, they could be a little bit more honest about a few things, and if they did buck up their ideas I'd probably consider staying there again, but only if they made a few major changes.

This is a "guest house" so your experience will be more like a hostel than a hotel. To stay here you have to make a reservation, no walk ins are accepted, but do not worry as the process to get a reservation is very easy and unless there are a couple of groups staying getting a room shouldn't be too much of a problem. There are a few different options as to what kind of room from single rooms with community toilets and showers to en suites to family rooms if you are sharing a room with your family. Personally, I don't mind not having an en suite because there are plenty of bathrooms and toilets for use that it has never been an issue. There are a couple of common areas where are not only a good place to hang out with friends, but if you are on your own it is a great place to meet others. In addition, a fresh and plentiful breakfast is provided in the morning and with assigned seating, if you don't come with a group, this is another chance to meet other travelers. Overall, this is a really nice place that is affordable and with easy access to not only Central London, but a wide variety of different shops, pubs, and restaurants. I have been here a couple times now and one time for over a week and had a great experience.

Technically not a B&B as the second B is not offered so breakfast has to be sourced locally (lots of options at the nearby Chrisp Street market, including the delightful JPs Cafe) but an excellent choice for either workmen looking for 'digs' during the week or for weekend visitors to the capital who are on a budget.
