I have come to events on campus many times over the years, but my most recent visit was eye-catching. Significant resources have been poured into the campus as new buildings and grand refurbishments and renovations continue apace. This should be the norm for all HBCUs around the country. It is a testament to the value the state places on its universities, although the level of investment pales in comparison to College Park. The quad is the envy of other schools, some with higher endowments, tuitions, and budgets. It is big enough that it feels like a university but still small enough to feel like home. My favorite feature/building/concept is the Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community (ELLC). Home to students who want to be entrepreneurs, here they live (brand new dorms), eat, and learn (classrooms and other spaces). There is a business and creative synergy that is self evident all throughout the space. I took a cohort of school age mentees for a tour and lunch at BSU. They were over-the-moon about the Student Center Dining Hall's food and modern decor. The food choices included fresh vegetables and fruits, custom made salads and bowls, hand crafted pizza, grilled to order items, and high quality rotating items from a self-serve bar. The seating area had huge windows where the sunlight shone through. The academic and recreational buildings were top tier. But what struck me most was the energy, passion, and intelligence of the students and faculty. They treated my mentees like little brothers coming to campus to learn from older siblings. The students seemed supportive of each other. D9 organizations got along too., but the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. always raise the bar. Bowie State University should be proud of the work they continue to do and the student needs they continue to meet. Five stars easily earned!

I had wanted to book extra hours behind the wheel before I scheduled my roads test, but Mr. Ish really pushed me to take it sooner because he felt I was ready. Very glad he did.

I just passed my DC driving test, and its all thanks to the wonderful instruction from this school!…read moreI would recommend them highly to anyone, especially folks like me who are learning as adults. Before my lessons with Mr. Ish, the only driving experience I had as a 36 year old was some parking lot practice, and a one hour lesson with a different school (which I didn't think was very helpful so I didn't continue). I took 5 lessons of 2 hours each (10 hours total) with him and found him to be an incredibly patient and supportive instructor. I had a lot of anxiety going into the whole process, and his calm presence always put me at ease and made me more confident. When I would make a mistake like making too wide of a turn into a streeet, he would point it out but also ask me why I did it that way. It felt like he really wanted to get to the root of the issue to help fix it. In the case of turning too wide, we realized that I was misjudging the distance of my car from the parked cars on the street. This thoughtful approach really helped diagnose and correct issues as they came up and it was so satisfying to visibly see myself improve. His approach to teaching parallel parking was super clear, and I was able to confidently parallel park during the test, and have now also done it in relatively tight spots on DC streets! He also recommended doing a last lesson right before the test in the Deanwood neighborhood (where the DMV test takes place). This was great advice, and Mr. Teddy accommodated me for a pre-test lesson on short notice. I used the school's car for the test, which was helpful since I was familiar with it. The day of the test there was a really long wait at the DMV and Mr. Teddy waited with me patiently and was also really supportive. All the communication and reminders from the school about lesson times, locations were timely and clear, Mr. Ish was always on time for picking me up, and it was just a seamless experience end to end.

Months later, while attempting to fix an issue with my car, I ran into some difficulty with fixing the relatively simple issue online. So I go into the MVA and attempt to use the kiosk so that I can scan my registration to no avail. Upon speaking to an attendant at the MVA I learn that the reason for my issue is that my title DOESN'T EXIST due to the fact that the required paperwork was never sent over. At which point, I return to Drive Smart hoping to fix this little mix up only to initially have the staff insist that I must not have used their services so its not their problem. Once they actually deigned to look however, they discovered that this was, in fact, a title that they had issued. They then claimed that it probably wasn't their fault but they would resend the information so I let it slide and went about my life. And then I receive a letter from the MVA concerning the first issue so I go back in (believing my titling issues should be resolved) and attempt to correct the issue, which proves impossible for THE SAME REASON. I call them again, still patient, and they insist they will be sending the information over, calling the mva, whatever is necessary to fix the issue. Fast forward a few months. It's time to renew my registration and to that, the initial issue must be fixed. I go in again. Once again, I am told that the required documentation was never sent through. I STILL don't have a title. I call him back to have him again instead that it's not his fault, it's that of the MVA. Not once have I received an apology for this error nor any proof that he is doing what he says he is. Save yourself some time and a headache and just go to the MVA. It will be annoying but it you'll at least get the service you're paying for.

Safe By Choice Driving, 7700 Old Branch Ave #E206, Clinton, MD 20735…read moreMore than twenty attempts to resolve this matter directly with the company -- all unanswered. My daughter completed the lecture portion of her driver's education course on November 21, 2025. As of today, April 2, 2026, we have been unable to schedule the remaining driving lessons required to complete the program, despite payment being made in full and upfront. Students are required to log on every Friday after 6:00 PM to attempt to book a single lesson at a time. We have only been able to secure two lessons -- both of which required us to continuously refresh the company's webpage for up to an hour before a slot appeared. One of those lessons had to be canceled due to illness, leaving four lessons still outstanding. Since, we have been completely unable to secure any availability whatsoever. This scheduling system -- which restricts students to booking only one lesson per week and makes availability impossible to access -- is grossly inadequate and, at worst, deliberately deceptive. The chronic lack of availability is a strong indicator that this company is knowingly enrolling more students than it has the capacity to serve. This constitutes a failure to deliver contracted services. Compounding this issue, we have been entirely unable to reach anyone at the company by phone. Numerous voicemails have been left with no response. The complete lack of customer communication, combined with the inaccessible scheduling system, reflects a pattern of negligent and potentially fraudulent business practices. My daughter's learner's permit will expire before she is able to complete this course through Safe By Choice Driving, forcing us to enroll in another driving school at additional expense -- despite having already paid this company in full. Found numerous complaints from other customers describing identical experiences. Not an isolated incident but rather a systemic and ongoing practice
