Before I met my match at GMonkey, the thought of vegan-only dining made my stomach turn. "How could eating only non-animal products possibly be filling?" I thought. Well, my friends, I'm here to tell you that GMonkey exceeded my expectations in almost every way possible.
I had the pleasure of eating from this food truck at the Billings Forge Farmers' Market with a vegan friend of mine (fellow Yelper Biota H.!). To be honest, if it wasn't for Biota, I never would have considered eating from GMonkey simply given the price tag of entrees (on average about $10-12 each). I was also nervous about trying GMonkey because (1) I had the preconceived notion that vegan food was the worst of the worst -- both expensive and incredibly skimpy in its appetite-fulfilling power and (2) I was worried that those running the truck would be incredibly snooty towards newbies like me who didn't know what to do when walking up to order.
Thankfully, neither of those worries came to fruition. When I (predictably) got to the front of the line with no idea of what to order, the woman in the truck seemed to completely understand my plight. She in no way rushed my order and introduced me to all the dishes as if I had never heard the phrase "live sprouted wrap". And best of all, she wasn't condescending. It's as if she knew that most people in line were curious about trying foods they hadn't eaten before, and thus she wanted to help them discover some truly delicious food.
And delicious food it was. The sweet potato fries + Gmonkey's homemade ketchup were out of this world. The Run Chicken Run Wrap was some sort of culinary miracle -- filling, fresh, uniquely textured, and bursting with flavor (I swear there was some sort of delicious beet-flavored dressing, even though it's not listed as one of the ingredients on the menu).
But wait, I skipped the coolest part of my story. Biota and I were among the last to order before the truck closed down it's lunchtime business. And for some reason, someone didn't pick up their Farm 2 Street Black Bean and Chipotle Burger. As we were picking up our order, the woman in the truck casually hands us the unclaimed Burger, and says, "Do you want it? It's yours...oh and by the way, we had extra sweet potato fries, so I gave you an extra half serving." Um, THANK YOU!!!
If it wasn't for the high prices (and the blandness of the burger I got for free, which I really shouldn't be complaining about), I wouldn't hesitate to give this food truck 5 stars. But alas, I'm stingy with my 5-star reviews, even though I firmly believe that this is the best food truck in Hartford, bar none. read more
