Scrumdilliumptious! What a pleasant surprise! I have to admit I was hesitant to grab dinner from a food truck but I was assured it was amazing and I was sooo hungry I decided to go for it. Normally I don't do well with greasy, spicy or fatty foods but I decided to try the Avomelt 86 bacon add tomato since I'm a vegetarian. However, to my surprise it wasn't greasy at all and was so mouthwateringly flavorful that after the 1st half I was full but I just couldn't stop taking one more bite until next thing I knew I devoured the entire sandwich. TBH I have been thinking and craving another sandwich since. Finally today 2 days later I decided to just go for it and give into this intense craving but the restaurant was closed. I tried to hunt down the food truck but unfortunately it wasn't out; so I'll have wait & try the restaurant tomorrow. The truck was super clean, the line moved very quickly and my order was ready w/I a few minutes. Oh and the guy working was crazy friendly and super cool about the modifications I requested. After looking at their menu I can't decide between the Avomelt, Caprese, Spinach artichoke dip or tomato bisque. I guess I'll just have to make a few visits when family comes to try them all. They have a lot of vegetarian options which is great especially considering lots of restaurants have a very limited vegetarian offering. Let it be said this was honestly the best sandwich I've ever had. Looking forward to trying something new tomorrow! You should definitely give this place a try! 5 stars doesn't do The Whey Station justice! read more

Extremely disappointing and unprofessional experience. We contacted The Whey Station Food Truck on June 22, 2026, about catering our Jack & Jill event on September 5, 2026. Josh responded on July 6 confirming that they were available that day and said he would contact the brewery to work out the details. We provided the brewery contact information on July 8. After not hearing anything further, we followed up on July 24 to confirm the details. Josh did not respond until August 3, when he explained that they would only be able to serve our party and that, in order for it to make sense for them, there would need to be a minimum. We immediately asked what minimum he expected. It took another 14 days, until August 17, for Josh to tell us that his normal catering minimum was $850. We explained on August 19 that we were comfortable covering up to $400 and that, with approximately 100 guests, another food truck, and light appetizers, we expected the two trucks to handle the food for the event. At no point did Josh clearly tell us that he was declining the event, that our $400 offer was unacceptable, or that he considered the booking canceled. He also never told us that a deposit was required to confirm the booking or that, without one, he would not show up. Then, on September 5 (the actual day of our event) Josh and The Whey Station food truck simply did not show up. I called Josh when we realized the truck was not present, and he did not return our call. Instead, he eventually sent a message stating that he "never agreed to come," that a deposit had not been paid, and therefore the event was not contracted. Regardless of whether Josh personally considered the booking finalized, this is not an appropriate or professional way to handle a catering commitment. If he had concerns about the arrangement, disagreed with our proposed minimum, required a deposit, or did not intend to attend, he should have communicated that clearly before the event, especially after we had repeatedly followed up trying to finalize the details. The biggest issue isn't that we couldn't come to an agreement on the catering minimum. The issue is that he left us with the impression that the arrangements were still being worked out and then, without clearly telling us that he was not coming, no-called-no-showed on the day of a major event. For an event that had been discussed for more than two months, this was incredibly frustrating and put us in a very difficult position with our guests. We would not recommend The Whey Station based on this experience. Clear communication and timely confirmation are the bare minimum when dealing with someone's scheduled event. 2-3 week response times to emails are unacceptable. read more

I am severely disappointed in myself that I have never reviewed The Whey Station!! Easily one of the best food trucks in CT. They've taken the simple concept of grilled cheese and put it on another level. Other grilled cheese trucks just don't compare! I personally think it's the bread - and the people behind it! One of the main locations they setup shop is the Xfinity Theater in Hartford. It's a concert tradition of ours to get Whey Station before a show. DON'T be intimidated by the line - it moves quick and it's worth it. I can't count the number of sandwiches I've ordered specifically at Xfinity! Just see the photos for proof LOL A fan favorite is definite the "Channing Tater" but I also love to do the "Monger" with jalapeno & bacon. My mouth is watering already! read more

Food Trucks... this was my first time getting Whey Station grilled cheese. It was good! I ordered the Avo special. It's bacon, avocado and chipotle aioli. I don't care for chipotle, and was suggested that I get the garlic aioli instead. I figured, why not? Wow... the look, the smell... it was good. Lots of avocado, thick bacon, super cheesy and yummy aioli between perfectly grilled bread. I'm impressed...I thought it would be simple grilled cheese. What a nice surprise...5 kinds of cheese melted to perfection. read more

I was able finally to check out Whey Station at today's Coventry Farmer's Market. They had about 10 sandwiches available, and it was tough to choose. I ultimately went with the "AvoMelt" ($8) because you can't go wrong with guacamole. I scored the big time! I was impressed by the portion of the guacamole, and it was good guac. Peppered inside was the bacon - also an awesome portion - and oozing cheese and creamy chipotle. (It wasn't particularly hot chipotle, in case you were worried!) Even though $8 might seem steep for a sandwich, the overall size of the sandwich and richness is definitely enough that you could share. It wasn't super greasy but maintained the classic feel of a grilled cheese sandwich plus some excellently-imagined combinations. I cannot wait to try more. read more

I went to the Whey Station when it was in Bushnell Park after a coworker had mentioned it was "the best grilled cheese" he's ever had. After finally getting the timing right me and and other coworker got grilled cheeses & split fries. I got the AvoMelt; cheddar, bacon, guac and a chipotle sauce which was really good but almost too much for me. The star of the show was the fries which were amazing. We got some sort of special which had Bear's pulled jerk chicken with some sort of aioli and mango salsa. I wish I knew when they would have this again because it was that good, I'd make the walk for it. Since then I've gone an additional time. This time I got the Big Sal grilled cheese; Monger Mix, prosciutto, caramelized onions and truffle aioli, and the cheesy bacon tots; tots, cheese sauce and melted cheese, bacon & scallions. The Big Sal was really good. It was a bit salty but just as expected with prosciutto. I would get it again. The tots were good but it was a lot of food on my own. I probably wouldn't get both again without a second person. I would definitely go again but probably ease up on the quantity of food because it's the type of food that makes you want to take a nap right after consuming. There are lots of different grilled cheeses along with tots or fries. I would recommend the Whey Station if you want a filling, buttery, grilled cheese. read more

Admit it... many of you reading this review grew up with the following (1) a cafeteria style cellophane wrapped sandwich where you could not even tell if the yellow "stuff" in the center was cheese or some other type of mystery substance or (2) a sandwich of the homemade variety with burnt bread that was flattened within an inch of its life to get the cheese to melt. It seems that something as simple as a grilled cheese that seems really easy make is actually easy to mess up. However, I still held out hope that somewhere there must be some place some where I could get a GOOEY and CRISPY (not burnt) grilled cheese. After searching and testing some pretty awful options, thank heavens, I have finally found a place for type of grilled cheese I have been searching for AND its Mobile .......Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been following this mobile food truck on Twitter and Facebook for a while and salivated every time I came across a tweet, saying to myself "Self - stop dreaming and find this truck of cheesy goodness." However, I was skeptical at the same time - how could a food truck get the two components I deem essential for a good grilled cheese right in a such a cramped space. Well I am here to tell you that they get it oh so right and it tastes oh so good! We were lucky enough to "find" them at a local event held recently at Becket Farms. My husband is a cheese head so it did not take much convincing to split a couple of sandwich's because I could not decide on just one. We split their classic Monger - a blend of five cheese which I think was our favorite. I loved that when Mark and I pulled apart the sandwich the cheese was nice and melty but did not fall out of the sandwich in a big clump. I also tried the Bacon Marmalade - which had just the right amount of sweet and salty that paired together nicely with the cheese. Bacon and Cheese - what more can I say! From start to finish our food was in our hands in less than 10 minutes. A great feat considering there were quite a few customers around. Each sandwich was very consistent - grilled bread that was crispy but not greasy and contained the right amount of cheese without being overpowering . The owner's were there with their children (who they call their cheese curds, so cute) and were very pleasant to each customer. Good Grilled Cheese - NO AWESOME GRILLED CHEESE. Yes - it can be done! read more

CHEESE GLORIOUS CHEESE AND SOME FANCY FRIES TOO!! Oh how I LOVE the food truck!! Awesome crispy butter grilled bread with cheese in the middle how can you go wrong? I am OBSESSED with this food truck. I literally get so excited when I see it. It's that good. This place is seriously grilled cheese heaven. It's the grilled cheese you wish you could make for yourself after a long day and all you want is something cheesy and carby and delicious. The Monger Mix is great, but why would you go for a regular grilled cheese when there are SO many other amazing and unique options!? (Unless you're a grilled cheese purist, which I can understand). My personal favorite is the Mutt - "monger mix", bacon, truck-made bechamel cheese sauce, and potato stix. I totally thought that the cheese mix and the cheese sauce would be overkill, but that bechamel is seriously amazing. I would eat it with a spoon. And potato stix for crunch?! Doesn't get better than that. Another fave is the Channing Tater - "monger mix", bacon, tater tots, scallions, and sour cream. Can't really say much more other than I'd probably give up my first born for this sandwich. I also enjoy the Ella - brie, prosciutto, and truck-made fig spread - when I'm feeling a bit fancier :) Oh! And I can't forget their tots! My fave are the Cali Tots - tater tots with guacamole, bacon, and creamy chipotle. Just so, so good. And did I mention that they're super fast? read more

Obsessed. That is the word I would use to describe how I feel about Whey Station. The way that they transform grilled cheese and tater tots into delicious works of art is insane. We most recently enjoyed Whey Station at a concert at Xfinity Theatre in Hartford and one thing I can say is DO NOT be intimidated by the long line because they work so hard and efficiently that you honestly will not wait that long at all. Finger lickin' good! Unreal. Unreal. Unreal how good these things are. I've be stalking the Whey Station truck for about a week, patiently waiting for it to pull up its parking brake in Hartford; and thankfully, today, it did! Situated across from the Capitol Building, and 2 other food trucks (Peony and Agave Canteen), Whey Station sits comfortably on the outskirts of Bushnell Park. I was sure to check the website first to see what kind of offerings they had; however they put out a list (from the website list) saying what the are making on that day. (One girl behind me asked if they could make a Jalapeno Sunrise, but I think they were missing a few ingredients) So, with that in mind, you cant come into it with a preconceived notion of what you want to get. I ended up order the Davy Jones (Which is not on the online menu); it had Cheese! Roast Beef! Caramelized Onions! Garlic Aioli! Truck-made Gravy! Honestly, the Aioli and Gravy made this sandwich, so moist, so rich, so good. My friend ended up ordering the 'Mutt' which had potato strings, bacon, cheese, other things! Not sure, but it was GOOD. We ended up splitting so that we could try both, and this one was by far my favorite. The bacon has a sweet flavor to it, and you can really taste the cheese. Overall just a bangin' grilled cheese. Every last bite was devoured and I really don't think you can go wrong here. Also saw that they had a poutine on the specials menu, ahhh if only I had the stomach space! The size is reasonable, and the prices are too. Definitely going to be making a few more stops whenever they are in the area! Thanks Whey Station! read more

THE. WHEY. STATION. ROCKS. It's cheese on wheels. DELICIOUS cheese on wheels. The variety of grilled cheese sandwiches changes every once in a while, but they have a board in front of the order window so that you know what they have that day. If you are not a grilled cheese connoisseur, they also have regular fries, sweet potato fries, both plain or loaded with cheese and toppings. Sometimes they also offer loaded tater tots and POUTINE!! (Yes, I love poutine). That's just the basics. I have another review of the Whey Station (location: Middletown) with more details if I got your attention with cheese. This one's just the teaser. Full disclosure: I am writing this review as one of those people who could live on cheese alone. I have been waiting to catch up with the Whey Station truck for about a year. I finally got my chance at the Simsbury flea market. I ordered the basic: The Monger. It's your "standard" melted blend of 5 glorious cheeses grilled to perfection. Their bread is to die for. And it's buttery and crunchy and grilled just right. The cheese drips out of this thing and stretches with every bite. It's really good, and really worth $6. The truck seems to have a huge line wherever they go so we got there early. Nothing wrong with grilled cheese at 10am! The cheese grillers who work the truck are awesome and very nice. Let me start by saying that growing up in NJ, I spent the majority of my adolescent and young adult life eating grilled cheeses at diners. They hold a special place in my heart and even more importantly, in my stomach. Now cue the sad music...when I realized that I couldn't eat wheat anymore, my grilled cheese dreams were crushed. I have been to many places where the Whey Station truck was parked and I would just look longingly in their direction. One day my husband had an incredibly thoughtful and brilliant moment and decided to go and ask if they had gluten free bread. The answer was surprisingly yes and it was like I had won the lottery! Since this epiphany, I've had two epic grilled cheeses from this truck. The first was the avo melt, which is cheddar, bacon, guacamole and chipotle. The flavors melded together perfectly and the bread was so good that I was actually worried for a minute that it wasn't gf (it was, just for the record). The second time that I visited I shared one that was incredibly delicious, but I can't remember its name. Either way, I am delighted that I can enjoy grilled cheeses again- especially those as creative and high quality as WS serves. If you're ever strolling around Bushnell park or at an event where the truck is parked, drop what you're doing and get in line. You will never be disappointed! read more

After trying one of their four food trucks a few times in years past--featuring easy to love gourmet grilled cheeses, we had to try this literal brick and mortar location in downtown Middletown. Taking the risk in trying it out in the first week of its premier opening, we were optimistic....and pleasantly surprised. Went there today for lunch and I had the Caprese grilled cheese with a side of Tater Tots...and a beer. It was a good size sandwich with fresh mozzarella, some large tomatoes, and a pesto on a thickly sliced buttery toasted bread. The lunch meal came out in a timely fashion. The place has a really cool vibe, typical of other cool eats downtown here. If forced to criticize, my only negative hits against this place were it was kinda smoking inside, which left me with soot in my nostrils--evident on kleenex. Additionally, on a 15-degree day outside, the restaurants heating seemed to be lacking. Both issues I consider to be minor bugs that they'll surely work out in the coming days. The food, service, and atmosphere were all pretty awesome though, and we'll surely be returning. read more

I have been stalking this place for months. Instagram, twitter, yelp over and over and over. Until today, I had not yet had the pleasure of visiting Whey Station. This is a food truck. And it accepts credit cards. Score!! I had seen pictures of this place on cteatsout on IG and was immediately enamored. I love all things cheese. It's really quite a problem. Today, i had some availability and could stop at the truck at Bushnell Park in Hartford. It looks like the truck is usually there on Wednesdays 11:30a-2pm. My brother was with me for the ride which he declared was a "foodie fat hunt". lol. They have about 10 different melts to choose from. You can also try the tots, loaded tots, or poutine. I ordered the Nola which included monger mix (their cheese mix which is on every melt), andouille sausage, jalapeño, and chipotle sauce. My order was up relatively quickly. I waited until I got to the airport to consume this. To my surprise, the melt was still warm and the cheese pulled apart easily. The bread had a great buttery crisp to it. Maybe it was just me, but I could've done without he sausage. Maybe some chicken or steak would've been a better fit. Don't get me wrong. This. Ish. Is. GOOD! at $8 a pop, the price isn't too bad for what you get (at least in my opinion). Try it out. You won't regret it. I already know what I'm getting next time. The avo melt. Yup! read more

I had my first Whey Station experience at the Meadows for Honda Civic Tour this year, since I don't really make it out Middletown way that often, and that's where the Whey Station is based out of, nor do I frequent Hartford all that often, which is also where they're usually found. I had been wanting to try them for AGES though. I had the Mutt, which was absolutely divine, the only complaint I have is that they obviously were forced to limit what they serve when at the Meadows, and jack up prices accordingly. (i.e. website touts Avery Soda...which they didn't have at the Meadows, and they charged the 4whatever the Meadows charges for water.) I'm not going to hold that against them though, because Live Nation sucks monkey balls, and I'm sure that was their greedy idea. I LOVE grilled cheese, so Whey Station was a hit for me. I'm definitely going to have to make it a point to check them out in their "natural habitat" so to speak. read more

I love the Whey Station. This husband-wife duo do a great job at coming up with creative concoctions of cheeses and meats, vegetables, sauces and garnishes. Among their most popular inventions: check out the "Monger", a signature blend of 5 cheeses or my personal favorite, the "AvoMelt" which is a heavenly mix of cheddar, bacon, guacamole and creamy chipotle. You can find them on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Hartford's Bushnell Park and also at Wesleyan University where students line up on campus for late-night eats on Thursdays. Veterans at summer food truck festivals, Whey Station also has a long-term residency at the Xfinity Theatre where I pigged out last time I saw The Black Keys perform live. Um, how have I not reviewed this gooey cheesy heaven on earth (err, wheels) yet? Cheese is my #1 food and this delightful food truck offers a plethora of seriously tasty grilled cheese variations. I've tried their classic five cheese monger, caprese, and my personal favorite, The Ella. Not only is this my darling cat's name, but a flavor packed combo of brie, truck-made fig garlic jam and prosciutto. Sometimes they can go a bit heavy on the prosciutto for salt overload but then I just pick some off...and eat it later. The rest of The Whey Station's menu is pretty creative and hinges on some classic flavor combinations with gourmet twists. Standouts include the French onion sandwich with Swiss blend and french onion confit, along with a sandwich built of Vermont cheddar and bacon-apple chutney. Bread is local (Deep River), the truck itself is adorable, and the husband-wife team behind the truck is just fantastic! Bottom line, grilled cheese makes people happy. read more

I will pre-empt this review by saying that I tried this place as part of a food truck festival. A large part of the lowered stars rating is due to the sheer length of time to get a grilled cheese sandwich. The Whey Station is a legend in CT, so I couldn't really pass it up when I saw its presence at the Buckland Hills Food Truck Festival for July 4th weekend. EVERYONE practically was standing outside of this food truck and I figured, I had to try it. We waited 45 minutes for 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. That, to me, is INSANE. If you are a food truck - forgive me for telling someone how to do a business that I don't know anything about - but prepping the sandwiches so they can just be thrown on the grill (not days in advance, but the morning of) would probably have saved a TON of time. That was the general consensus of those around me, also waiting 45+ minutes for their sandwiches. When I finally got the sandwiches - they were OK. Not mind-blowing-ly great, like I was fully expecting. I love cheese, I love toasty bread, but I could have made it myself, to be honest. Not what I was looking for. Not sure if it's different outside of a festival atmosphere, but I wouldn't drive to Middletown to find out based on my experience. read more

In fact, I've given their sandwiches a name:I call their sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches for "grown folks." I stopped a the Whey Station location that is in the warehouse while I was at a party at Stubborn Beauty Brewing this past Sunday. I was not sure what it was, but when I saw the menu I knew I had to try something! There is a wide assortment of grilled cheeses, with combos I never would have thought of but are amazing! You can also make your own if you would like. The prices are reasonable, and also they are made quickly! We waited about 5 minutes for our two sandwiches, even when people were ahead of us in line! I ordered the Nola, which was spicy andouille sausage, jalapenos and creamy chipotle, as well as the Barlow which was whole roasted garlic cloves and a garlic aioli. Both were delicious and had a lot of flavor, though the Nola was definitely my favorite.
