Was a great place to have lunch while visiting the town. A place I imagine they get a lot of repeat and local customers. The waitress was friendly and prompt to come and get our drink order and to get it brought to us. Then our order was not long after that. A table of 4 and we received our appetizer quick enough and had time ro enjoy it before our order came. We all made sure to get something different so as to try as much of the menu we could. Burger, fries, cauliflower, chicken fried steak sandwich, pork tenderloin sandwich, onion rings, glue fries, drinks and im sure im missing something. Everyone left feeling very satisfied, and loving our choices and what we ate. The place is smaller and I can see once its a packed house it is probably noisy but its to be expected. After all it is a tavern. I will be recommending the place as much as I can and will visit again when I am in town. read more

My first time visiting Columbus, and I'm so glad I stopped by this historic tavern, it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was full of character and the service was top-notch. Ben (in the hat) and Madison were incredibly welcoming, personable and genuinely made the experience memorable. Their energy and friendliness turned a casual visit into a highlight of my trip. I'll absolutely be back, especially if one of them is behind the bar! We fell in love with this place the moment we stepped across the threshold. It was a warm beacon on a cold, foggy night, and we drive over an hour out of the way to go to it. Hashtag worth it. It's no frills, no fuss decor, and kind of feels like you're in someone's basement. Staff was limited, but there were only a couple other tables, so we feel like we got good service even when she forgot one of our sides. No matter! We were under this historic establishment's spell. Two Nebraskan draft beers, the Rutgers game on TV, a blasting radiator--we were living the Cornhusker dream! The burgers are amazing! The two of us shared a double cheeseburger that was insanely good, and like the place itself, it excelled by keeping it simple and delicious. We loved the crinkle fries, and the Glurs fries were really good once you put the Lawry seasoning salt on the them. We also got a side of their fried cauliflower that was good for getting some veggies in (we say facetiously). Our daughter was content with her cheeseburger, and the bill was so reasonable that we almost felt guilty. Is this place "perfect"? Hardly. But it's such a pleasant little slice of Americana and we were beyond happy we went. Even bought a T-shirt to prove it. 4.5 stars, rounding up because we're feeling patriotically cute. read more

No frills food in friendly, historic confines. Glur's does what it does and does it well. The burgers are some of the best in the state, and everything that comes out of their fryers is better than par. It's a lot cleaner now-a-days, and the staff makes you feel at home. Very cool and historical place. Wanted to try a burger there but the bartender was a tad off so just had a cold beer and left.

My brother and his wife were in Columbus and had never been to Glur's. We went on a Thursday night, sat at the bar and had beers and burgers. Our bartender was great. She helped us land on the right burgers and fried assortment of items. Beer was cold, food was good and for the oldest tavern in Nebraska, it's held up nicely. ONE cook. Soda from a can. No refills. Waited over an hour for our insanely simple, bland burgers and semi-cold fries. Bathrooms tiny and kinda dirty. TV's were on some weird version of Zoom Maury. Billed as the longest serving tavern west of the Mississippi, this is a bar and grill to explore when passing through Columbus, Nebraska. Don't let the rustic interior fool you, the burgers and traditional bar food could compete with those in larger cities. However, the styrofoam plates and tiny paper napkins give clues that you aren't in the city. My husband had the cheeseburger and I decided to try the gizzards. We shared classic onion rings. Our servings were large and very much what we expected--no surprises. Prices were on the low side with both of us eating for under $20 which included drinks and a tip for the overworked waitress who was covering the entire lunch crowd. The grill king brought out orders shouting, "who ordered a cheeseburger?" The one downer was the restrooms. The men's restroom did not lock and the women's had not been cleaned in the last week....overflowing trash, and a dirty sink & stool. Icky! Parking and access was quick and easy. A large lunch crowd was present and patient. We received our meals one piece at a time....first the hamburger, onion rings 5 minutes later and finally the gizzards. For some this would be a problem but we used this as an opportunity to share food and enjoy the friendly crowd. We will be back when visiting Columbus but I will make sure I don't need to use the restroom on my return visit. read more

We drove an hour and a half to this restaurant based on the Google website information that said they were open until midnight. Guess what? They were closed. There were no signs on the doors or windows to indicate their hours. It was 10 pm on a Saturday night and we walked around downtown to find somewhere else to go. I make it a point to go to Glur's when I am in the Columbus area. Local legend has it that Buffalo Bill Cody paid his bill at Glur's Tavern with a $1,000 bill after a funeral in Columbus for Major Frank North in May 1883. North had been the head of the Pawnee Indian Scouts and was a close friend of Cody's. Buffalo Bill brought his group to Columbus for the funeral and rehearsed at the local fairgrounds. The outside is historic, white clapboard, that probably has not changed much since Bill was there. The inside is more modern and sports bar like. The food is basic, bar food, but with a homemade touch. Don't expect fast food. It will take about 20+ minutes for your order to come. I like the wings, the chicken salad (on the days they have it) and the burgers. I have always felt like a regular when I walk in, although I am only here a couple of times a year. How is there not a review of this until now? This review is based on my visit last summer while traveling through Nebraska. Having opened in 1876, this is the oldest continually-operating bar in Nebraska and one of the oldest in the west. It was a favorite spot of Buffalo Bill and more recently of Leon Sphinx. It was still early in the day and we were the only customers. Though it's well maintained and somewhat modernized on the inside, it still retained the feel of a bar over 140 years old. We really, really wanted souvenir glasses from here, but they were in the basement and the bartender had a broken foot and couldn't get them for us. :( read more

I could see myself becoming a regular here. The food is simple but good and the beers on tap were tasty. I had the pork tenderloin; the wings and a couple beers. They were all perhaps "premade" but they were fresh tasting enough. Worth a stop for a beer and a bite if you're rolling through. read more

Glurs is a local treasure. It is the oldest tavern west of the Mississippi river. That said, the building is old and still looks similar to how it originally did. Don't expect a fancy or new atmosphere. DO NOT GO IF YOU ARE IN A RUSH. Glurs has the best hamburger in the area for very low cost. It does take time however to get your food. The great: Great prices, and a nice beer selection. The good: Historic location and interesting story. The fries are also pretty good. Easy parking, not too noisy, and friendly staff. The so-so: The burgers are good, but did not really live up to the hype. The bar interior is surprisingly neutral considering the history of the place (in that it looks like pretty much every other dive bar I've ever been in. Not a bad thing, but not a good thing, either.) The not so good: Slow service, and the fried mushrooms were rather tough. The bad: Nothing. (Well, the men's room smelled pretty strong and the door lock did not seem to work.) Wife and I stopped as part of a day trip from Omaha and had been expecting a 'best burgers ever!' kind of experience from various reviews and articles. Arrived Saturday evening, place is about 1/2 full or so. Order a burger, a cheese burger, large fries and mushrooms to share, and a couple bottled beers. The waiter was new, so the fact that he took the drink order after the food order instead of the other way around was no big deal but it seemed like a rather long wait for the food. I also really prefer it when a glass is offered with bottled beer so you can pour out a nice head, but since he seemed to be having a bit of a rough time I did not press it and it is not a big deal. Burgers were a good size for the price, not the 'plate-filling' kind you get in a lot of places that brag up their burgers but a lot better than fast food. Cooked to medium (we were not asked about that, not sure if it was because it is the default or waiter did not think to ask), lightly dressed with onions and pickles. No fancier toppings are available- but again, great price and a perfectly good burger. The fries were pretty good (and the 'large' was plenty enough to share even for a guy like me that hogs them!) but the mushrooms were not really up to snuff, especially since the dipping sauce is extra. They were not bad, but I've had better at ice cream places with a small grill. All in all- I'd stop again if I was in the area and looking for a burger. read more

Glur's (pronounced 'Glu-ers', not 'glers' - I was corrected by a local) was exactly what I was hoping for. Two people working, one cooking and another waiting on the 20 or so people inside. Building is old (as advertised) but clean, with the exception of the men's room which had a non-functional toilet. (That's why the one-star ding.) Everybody was really nice. The food is Bar Food. Burger, hot Ham & Cheese, Chicken Sandwich. Fried Sides. I had a fried chicken sandwich that was just like the ones served in taverns in the south - chicken, pickle, onion on a white bread bun. Delicious! If you're looking for a salad bar or an overly-perky wait staff Glur's is not for you. If you want a really good burger & a cold beer then it's the place to be! read more

Had a great selection of liquor and beer. Owner was behind the bar and was very interesting and entertaining. Prices were good. We just stopped in for a drink as we had already eaten. Interestingly enough, a sales person from Yelp called while we were there. The owner asked how we knew about the place and we told him a "Welcome to Nebraska" magazine and a book "Off the Beaten Path." I mentioned we had gone to Yelp to check out reviews and showed him. My dad found this as soon as we got into Columbus, and if he finds something, you know it's good. This place is just as the name and building suggests- an old tavern that isn't quite like the new bars. It has a nice charm to it with a lot of hunting stuff and, of course, Miller beer signs. You can see the kitchen, which looks like a kitchen you'd have in an appartment except instead of a stove it has a big grill. And a fryer. The food is just good ol' American food- burgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, fries, etc. They have a special fries which is a potato cut into thin circles and then fried. It's really REALLY greasy but it's good!! I ate a ton of them and I usually don't eat potato products. Their sausages are superb, and the chicken sandwiches are average good. They're known for their burgers, which I have no idea why we didn't get them, so it you go there try those ;) The only downside was that they had a tv on full volume playing some way old soap, and soon it got pretty annoying. The server and the cook, who's the owner, were extremely nice and helpful, as everyone who lives in Nebraska seems to be. read more

I have been coming here with my family since I was little, and I will never stop liking this place. Yes, the staff isn't large, it is by no means fancy, and the men's bathroom is disgusting. But you won't find a better burger anywhere nearby! It's a fantastic place to grab a cold one and some bar food with some friends. Service was good - just one guy working his butt off initially, then some additional help came in. Good selection of local beers. Food was good - had a burger and fries. Too bad the inside of the tavern doesn't live up to the reputation of the outside. I'm not sure Bill Cody would eat here now. The inside was more of a 1970's decor. The food was okay, but it took a long time to arrive. There were four of us. Three of us ordered hamburgers and they came all at once. Then, we waited while the fourth meal, a sandwich of a different type was made. Then as we started to eat, I realized that the fries we ordered had not arrived. After a while one order of fries came, then another, and finally a third. Multi-tasking did not seem to be a strong suite. Probably would not visit again. read more

So, legend has it that Buffalo Bill Cody stopped in at Glur's after Major Frank North's funeral in May, 1983....and paid for his dining/drinking tab with a $1,000 bill. My wife and I, prior residents of Columbus were in town for a bereavement visitation service yesterday afternoon and stopped in at Glur's for hamburgers and refreshments. We found Glur's exactly as it was some years ago when we moved away. Proprietor Todd T. behind the bar single handedly minding the grill and the tap....efficiently preparing and serving up some of the best tap beer and other refreshments and THE BEST grilled hamburger/cheeseburgers, French Fries and Onion Rings in town! Besides us, there were a dozen or so patrons being cheerfully and promptly served. Hamburger put on the grill as soon as you ordered, onion's laid out next to the hamburger paddy and eventually top and bottom halves of bun added next to the onion and a slice of cheese added on top the nearly cooked hamburger.......sheer perfection, a work of art! The tab for Our Hamburger, Cheese Burger, Small French Fry and Small Onion Rings totaled $11.00 and change. We visited Glur's tavern for lunch on our way home figuring that we would get to see a historic bar. Former review were good but it was obvious that lots had changed since they were written. The outside of the building should have been a warning. The signage said historic but the faded beer posters plastered on the outside was a hint at what was to come. We sat at the bar even though their were tables available. For a historic place the Formica bar and cheap kitchen cabinets were disappointing to see. A TV above the bar had soap operas playing at full volume. The clutter on the bar surface, including dirty dishes, stacks of 3 day old newspapers and years worth of receipts was our second warning that the food would be disappointing. Service was extremely slow and the food we ordered came out separately. My husband ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich special. It was served on a small styrofoam plate and consisted of a thickly breaded 1/8th inch slab of tough pork on a too small white burger bun. The oil it was fried in covered up any possible taste of pork. I ordered "the best cheese burger in Columbus" and Glur's house fries. Same white bun that was stale. Small overcooked burger with raw onions and a couple of pickle chips. The only choice in cheese was a slice of cold American put on right before serving. The fries were thinly cut slices of unseasoned potatoes that were cooked in the same fryer as the pork tenderloin - they were too greasy to eat and got left on the table. The cook handled money without washing his hand before manning the fryer again. The only interesting thing we saw was a faded picture of Wild Bill Hickok hanging behind the bar. The rest of the walls were covered with beer posters and paraphernalia. My recommendation: save your time and money. Take a photo of the outside of the building (the best part) and eat elsewhere. read more

I grew up 6 blocks from Glur's and have great memories of this place, especially the beer garden out back with the world's best popcorn. It was a place to gather, drink, discuss football and world affairs. My father, Bobby Mills, had a very successful band in Columbus during the late 40s and 50s; his band would gather there on the "off" days, and go to the Rex to shoot pool. Glad to see that Glur's is still doing biz the way they always have...quiet and slow, getting it all done. Ya gotta go there if you're anywhere near Columbus. read more
