We would climb up the steps of of the big basalt rock to the open grassy area at the top. From up there, the sky seems huge and the sunsets are beautiful. It is so peaceful. I just read that is is built around old volcanic island. I don't really know what that means because I doubt there was any water at the base of it because it is right on the edge of the South Hill near cliff drive, but it really does feel like an island up there.

We went back a couple days later to find the fire was out. I took my friend's 2-mile walk with his dog and a lot of times he takes the dog home and goes back and walks another 4 miles. I found the area to be gorgeous with the Spokane river displaying a beautiful reflection early morning views. I had a fantastic time!! Can't wait to come back and trail walk again!

The river has so many spots and this was just one of them that we had found. Wide open spaces, creekside stream sounds, children laughing, wine coolers in tumblers...all of the above. This trail runs past ancient Native American pictographs before taking a lazy stroll amidst the singing birds of the Little Spokane River. At the west end of the path, you can turn north and explore the Knothead Valley trail which winds up through ponderosa pines and gives stunning views of the Spokane River below. The 6.5 mile loop drops back across the valley before turning south and ending back at the Painted Rocks trailhead for a solid outing. If you are looking for a longer excursion or just want more time along the river, the easterly trail (across the street and south across the bridge) adds another couple of miles of waterfront scenery.

Everything is green thanks to sprinklers which often run during the day and interfere with your picnics. Flowers start in late March and bloom through August. There is the occassional moose, groundhog, and porcupine, so be careful letting pets and children run unsupervised. Dogs are technically not allowed but no one cares.

Fish Lake is a warm water lake on the southwest side of Spokane. It's in an area with few other…read morelakes so a weekend visit in the summer is not advised unless you like crowds. The best way to explore the lake is on watercraft, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, to escape the crowds and appreciate the natural weed growth with pine tree backdrop. I quickly fished the boat launch once, catching a fish about the size of my fishing lure, and was about to fish one of their docks when I noticed that a group of teenagers had decided to use the dock as a diving platform to practice cannonballs. Fishing Fish Lake should probably be restricted to early morning hours, before the local teenagers are up.

This State Park is the former route of the Milwaukee Road Railroad. It runs across most of…read moreWashington State and into Idaho. It has 4 trailheads near Cheney, WA. One paved section runs northward about 4 miles from Cheney to Fish Lake, and is popular with bicyclists and walkers. From down town Cheney go about 1 mile south on the Cheney-Spangle Road. State Park parking is on the left. You do need a WA State Park Discovery Pass to park at any WA State Park. It's $30 per year for 2 vehicles, or you can pay for 1 day parking at the park. The trail also goes the southward from the same parking lot, but its gravel and not as popular. Some people find the old railroad bed trails a little boring because they are wide, and flat or have only gentle grades. Others prefer the easier trail. The pictures are from the gravel part of the Columbia Plateau Trail State Park south of Cheney.

I should've known the bike ride was going to be different when the splattering of bugs on my…read morewindshield got thicker the closer I got to the trail. I'm not sure how much windshield wiper fluid I used but at one point I gave up. When a ladybug smacks your windshield, they leave a red mark that can only be removed with a little elbow grease and a gas station sponge. The Columbia Plateau Trail is a 130 mile rails to trail bike route starting at Fish Lake trailhead. The first few miles are through a ravine cut through the rock and dirt for the old railroad. It was an interesting visual experience to bike through it to see the amount of effort required to lay railroad tracks. Now that it is replaced by a bike trail, nature is slowly taking back its land. Bushes are growing at the trails edge and down the ravine, small streams flow down each side of the trail next to the rocks, small rodents and Gambel's Quail scurry along with the sound of a nearby biker and, of course, at this time of year, lady bugs are out in force. Lady bugs must like the trail because they are protected from the wind. There were clouds of them. As I biked along, they would attach to my shirt in packs then start crawling. I got pretty good at swiping a fluttering my shirt to clean them off. I had to consciously keep my mouth closed so I wouldn't inhale one. I kept my visor low so they would smack off my helmet instead of my face. I only biked on the trail for a few miles because the paved section of the trail only runs for a few miles before turning to rough gravel. The rough gravel would be fine for a gravel bike or my mountain bike but not my road bike with skinny tires. I'm not sure if it transitions back to smooth pavement at any point in the next 127 miles, but I imagine it does closer to city centers. For those who wish to continue biking on pavement, there is a trailhead at the three mile marker, allowing for a quick escape to bike the quiet, paved country roads.
