Support your local bike shop and give it some TLC here rather than throw your money to Evans or one of the other big chains!

In the two inner rooms they both sell new and used bikes and also make and mend others. Many of the bikes in the shop are their own brand and they are mighty fine bikes - in an old school upright way you'd especially like if you were Dutch and totally unafraid at the thought of having no acceleration power to get away from bendy buses. Because of the craftsmanship many of the bikes are obviously quite expensive but you can easily pick up a second hand one you wouldn't know wasn't new for around 100 quid. They also do a good range of kid's bikes here so check those out too.

Very honest, and much appreciated as a woman who is often bamboozled by unnecessary bike jargon. They even tried to help me with parts for the new bike! I've returned several times, and Mark has offered me on-the-spot advice and quick fixes. I have now bought an expensive road bike and have absolutely no hesitation in taking it to Stratton Cycle. This is the first time I can say that after trying MANY bike shops in the area. The store front is very unassuming, but the service offered is second to none - I'd highly recommend for low to high end bikes!

As well as having a huge range of mountain, racing and all kinds of bikes, they are immensely knowledgeable and good at repair jobs. On the downside, it is often quite difficult to get served you really do have to fight for their attention. Be prepared for a bit of cockney banter and you can even haggle down the price on occasions. This is nothing like shopping at Evans Bike Superstore, but so much more of a personal and interesting experience.
