The hotel itself is dated but quaint- and initially we were very pleased- but OMG, the midges! It was broiling hot in our room, so we had to crack the window- and in came the midges. When we got back to the room, and found them swarming, we closed the window, turned the light on in the bathroom, to attract them, and slept with that light on and the dark in our room. So many of them died on the floor and the washbowl it looked like we'd gone wild with pepper! But even with the carnage in the bathroom we were bitten all over- we're still itching. Nasty. It's too bad, because the food was quite nice and the area is lovely. There's even a kirk across the way on a country lane, and a lovely war monument and a small river- with a rope swing! (go through the gate of the community garden to reach the river easily). The stone bridge gives you a lovely view of the mountains. But the midges! I'd never return. Note- I had to see a doctor for my midge bites. Am on both oral and topical mediation.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our hike of the West Highland Way, and had the best time here! The staff was wonderful (although it's obvious that they were all horse thieves, pirates and highway men in an earlier life, they were so friendly and helpful, they made us feel very welcome). The food was great (I'm still dreaming about that delicious steak and Guinness pie). The atmosphere made you feel like you'd stepped back in time-- lamp light and muskets and stuffed puffins and a bear in a Drovers t-shirt and kilt. OK, maybe not TOTALLY historically accurate, but history mixed with wit and a sense of fun. They tell me this inn is haunted. It must be by friendly, fun-loving spirits. On our first night there was live music at the bar. We enjoyed the singer/ guitar & harmonica player very much, but it all kicked up a notch when he got the whole room to join in on the singing. Everyone was clapping, stomping and pounding the table, while belting out a rousing rendition of "The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond". I can't remember enjoying a meal more. On our second night there, the power went out (thank you, Hurricane Amy). The staff showed that although they are retired horse thieves and pirates, they take their current jobs in hospitality very seriously. They could not complete cooking of the evening meals, so it was a quick pivot to sandwiches for all. They handled it with professionalism and grace that made the inconvenience part of the adventure (as one staff member quipped, it was all part of the haunted experience). Breakfast, too, was pulled together with what was available and ingenuity, as they made instant coffee and tea with water heated on the wood stove, and we feasted on cold cereal and granola bars. But as the staff met the challenges with good humor and made the best effort to make it a good experience for the guests, we walked away with an abundance of good memories and an enduring fondness for the Drovers Inn (and its resident horse thieves, pirates and highway men).

Great dinner - amazing location…read more We were staying in one of the self-catering apartments of this Hotel. Location is great - just sitting at the lovely and quiet Loch Awe. The first night we were a bit tired from the drive and didn't feel like cooking, so we visited the restaurant. It's nice and bright with great views of the Loch. Service was very friendly. We had the Goat's Cheese Salad (Grilled Goat's cheese served with roasted peppers, salad leaves, soda bread and raspberry balsamic dressing) and the Haggis Bon Bons (Crispy Haggis balls set on roasted tomato and chili chutney served with salad garnish) for a starter. Both equally good, but especially the Bon Bons were a pleasant surprise, good tasting Haggis! For the mains we had the Salmon with veggies and potatoes (daily special) and the Traditional Fish & Chips (haddock served in a beer batter served with chunky chips, peas and Tartar sauce). Both fish tasted very fresh and tender. Hot and crispy chips. With that we had a bottle of White wine, a Sauvignon Blanc Panul from the Lontué Valley, Chile. Fresh, fruity and crisp. Just 18£. We really had a great dinner. Good, fresh food for very fair prices, especially given the fantastic location. If you just come for dinner without staying here, the way back on the one-way street might be a bit dark. Luckily our way home was just a few steps :)

We stayed at this lovely guesthouse at Loch Fyne for the weekend and could not have been happier…read morewith it. It's a really beautiful house in the tiny village of St Catherines. We were in the area for the Loch Fyne Food Fair and it was handy travel wise. We had a very warm welcome from the owners Jenifer and Alastair who are the friendliest people you will meet. The house itself is an elegant Victorian country house with pretty gardens that you can sit outside in, although the weather wouldn't allow it this time. There are splendid views over Loch Fyne to Inverary. Our room was at the front of the house and had a magnificent 4-poster bed and was immaculately decorated. The bathroom was modern and spotless. There is an inviting drawing room that you can use with a fire and glasses for you to have a drink. The breakfast was delicious and we were offered recommendations for restaurants which Jenifer booked for us. The guest house is near to Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Inverary for sightseeing. I would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return again.

I had the pie of the day which was steak and mushroom with mashed potatoes and broccoli. My group all loved their burgers. My pie was very tasty, but there were several large globs of fat in there that weren't as good. My daughter also treated me to a fancy scotch, the BUNNAHABHAIN 40. It was grand. For dessert I had the cheesecake, but my group loved the sticky toffee pudding best. The service is fantastic. Lauren and George were especially good. I will come back!

The restaurant serves a classic Scottish breakfast, and the dinners (menu changes daily: we stayed 3 nights) showcase the local seafood and meat. The food was very good. There is a modernised but not antiseptic bar and a very comfortable residents' lounge. Service throughout was excellent. It is not cheap, but good value for money if you want to push the boat out a bit for a special break away.
