My email to Glen haven: Raj, I have moved the cremation of our son to another funeral home. Unfortunately, your services were very unprofessional. After numerous emails attempting to expediate the cremation, with offers to pay any amounts not covered, I was told today cremation could take up to another three weeks. We have immense grief and want some closure. When I first spoke to you an indication of the time frame should have been provided. Also, as the Ministry informed me that some funeral homes commence before approval the response of "unable" is at best inaccurate. I appreciate you are in a business but I feel we were pushed to the end of the line because it was being paid by the Ministry. Having to take care of a loved one's funeral service is probably the last thing one would want to deal with. I had the misfortune to handle my mom's funeral. Alex and his team at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel did a great job from the beginning. Alex explained all the options. Everything from the slideshow to the wreaths was handled perfectly. He was very accommodating when I kept making changes to the list of names presenting the wreaths. When the relatives arrived, they were impressed. Great song selections and speeches. The service we receive from our funeral director Alex and his team was excellent. Alex was professional and guided us throughout the process, adding suggestions of traditional Chinese customs that we were not familiar with. He was very accommodating to our last-minute changes and even our requests days after the service without making us feel bothersome. Alex went above and beyond when he set up special touches to the entry reception desk that was a tribute to our mom - we were touched to see what he had done. Born and raised living in Vancouver B.C all my life, Glenhaven Memorial Chapel has far been the best funeral home I have experienced in my life. I truly admire the Funeral Directors/Embalmers and staffs as they treat their customers with full respect and are professional with their job. I have been here many times as a few members in my family, relative and friend who had passed away, all had their funeral service held here at Glenhaven. My very first experience with Glenhaven was back in 2003 when my great grandmother who had passed away. Glenhaven Memorial Chapel is such a beautiful, warming and welcoming environment, I hope that a majority of you will consider and to hold a funeral service here. If I could give no stars that would be a more accurate score. I will be editing this continually as there were so much mistakes made by Glenhaven and I'm finally able to gather my mind to write this review. My mother passed away in the summer of 2014. It was not expected so the family did the best we could to give her a funeral without making it look rushed. My brother, his family and I dealt with Glenhaven. Comments by family and guests after the funeral were favorable but that was mainly due to my brother, his family and I rushing around fixing Glenhaven's mistake. The biggest, biggest, biggest mistake was the funeral person asking to settle the bill on the viewing night for immediate family before the formal memorial. My brother had offered several times to pay the bill days before this night and, yet, they chose that precious time to ask for payment! The funeral woman who took charge of us had repeatedly said it could be paid later. My brother accepted this in good faith and finally decided to pay after my mom was buried. The conglomeration of finances would take time and he would take advantage of the extra time from finance transfers to other funeral agendas. My brother is my mom's favorite and he, I believe, loved her the most. So this was his moment to say goodbye to my mother in the comfort of a small group before the hectic memorial the next day. Instead, he was rushing about gathering several credit cards from family to pay the hefty $20,000+ bill because his banks were closed. Even though it could have been paid that day with our credit cards he decided to call long distance to the "head" person to angrily assert that he was paying later as agreed. After spending two hours with all this confusion his private viewing day was ruined. To this day he feels that he was robbed of the peace he needed. For two weeks he dealt with all the major funeral arrangements without a moment to reflect upon my mom's passing. They stole this day from him. The package deal we chose was like buying TV channels. To get one thing you have to buy a lot of other things. So the cost was exorbitant for what it was worth. Because my brother already had a lot on his plate I took charge of the section which included gathering pictures, poems, names, bio information, etc. That in itself was laborious. With no direction from Glenhaven, I arranged this info as it should appear on the guest book, memorial book, DVD and stationary. His wife ended up helping me because it was so confusing and we had to go in a couple of times to discuss their mistakes, not to mention the calls made to clarify things. It would be simpler and cheaper to go to Costco or Xerox to do all this but we felt we had to justify the cost by taking their version of albums, DVD and stationary. The time we spent on this small section of the package was ridiculous! On the family viewing day we had to tell them they omitted two family member's name on the guest sign in book. I spent hours chronologically arranging the pictures for Glenhaven and yet it did not fully appear in that order in the DVD and memory book. The memory book pictures were all scanned darker and smaller than the original print. It looked ridiculous. It lies in the box, part of the package, and no one looks at it because it is so bad. Glenhaven is owned by a NYSE company called Service Corporation International based out in Houston Texasl. Check out Wikipedia for more lurid facts. It is a business that buys out smaller funeral homes and cemeteries. Basically they own most of BC, if not Canada's, funeral businesses and cemeteries. What prompted me to start this review is a CBC podcast about the business. Google "CBC corporatizaton funeral industry" Another woman had a similar experience to me. I figure we couldn't be alone and that a lot of other people were duped, unaware or too passive to write a review. Had I had time I would have checked this out as It is in my nature to research. The CBC podcast was aired May 7, 2014, just before my mom passed. I'm surprised I don't see any reviews here so I hope this one serves to help others make a choice they can live with. read more
