The salmon tasted off. We could smell the fishy-ness before it arrived at the table. He took one bite and confirmed the unpleasantness of the sandwich. My chicken was so overcooked it was rubbery and impossible to chew. We spoke to the manager and she took our plates to the chef. He said the fish was fresh so it was his word against my husband's. We ended up having to actually pay for that salmon but they didn't make us pay for mine. We will not be back. We've been coming here for 25 years. Such a shame.

This is one of my all time favourite places for coffee in East Lothian. The tea room is housed in the old boiler room of Smeaton House (now sadly long gone). It is not smart but it is very relaxed and cosy, the staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the baking never disappoints. I also really like the fact that the nursery is just that wonderful plants, none of the usual 'garden centre' ephemera. The nursery staff are also extremely welcoming. I recommend Smeaton unreservedly except that I don't want it to become too popular as I love its peaceful atmosphere!

The cabin is kept warm in winter with a feature stove fireplace and the owner is equally as welcoming. We fancied a snack, so opted for homemade soup with crusty bread. One of the party had a cheese & spring onion toastie - good uncomplicated fare. For afters, Mum had the Meringue with a pot of Earl Grey. Being more of a savoury fella overall, I don't often go in for cakes etc, but I decided to try the Apple & Cinnamon Scone with Butter & Jam. It was delicious, I have to say. They are expanding at the moment to allow more visitors to the cafe. Given the quality of the food, I think this will prove popular with ramblers and those looking for somewhere to relax that's a little bit different from the norm.

It also has a nice wee cafe where they serve Ben & Nanani Coffees and a good choice of snacks, sanwiches and cakes. I choose the bacon roll because it as a horrid wet cold day and it was the first thing i smelt as i walked through the doors. I also ordered a cappuccino. The cappucino was good as was the bacon roll, but did have to ask for brown sauce as wasn't asked at the counter when I placed my order. There was no problem as the server brought a decent portion in a wee dish out to the table. The bacon roll was tasty. The tearoom did feel a tad bit cold and only has one wood burner in a corner. I did think it was a wee bit expensive - 2 coffees, bacon roll and a scone with butter and jam came to £9.65. But the coffee and the bacon roll did warm me up. i think my mum enjoyed her scone and coffee too.
