The cabin is kept warm in winter with a feature stove fireplace and the owner is equally as welcoming. We fancied a snack, so opted for homemade soup with crusty bread. One of the party had a cheese & spring onion toastie - good uncomplicated fare. For afters, Mum had the Meringue with a pot of Earl Grey. Being more of a savoury fella overall, I don't often go in for cakes etc, but I decided to try the Apple & Cinnamon Scone with Butter & Jam. It was delicious, I have to say. They are expanding at the moment to allow more visitors to the cafe. Given the quality of the food, I think this will prove popular with ramblers and those looking for somewhere to relax that's a little bit different from the norm.

Abriachan Garden Nursery is a very special kind of place. It's probably what the tourist brochures…read morewould call a hidden gem. The garden nursery has a wide range of local plants that will grow in this climate and all are very cheap compared with the big garden centres. The secret to this garden nursery is the garden walks (with an honesty box for admission charges). I would never have imagined that this place existed on the banks of the loch. It is a fabulous garden on the side of the hill with lots of surprises around every turn (I won't spoil it by telling all the details). It is very steep however and you have to be reasonably fit to walk around. The climb is however well worth it when you see the views. Don't miss it the next time you are driving past.

As we knew they were both avid gardeners, I searched for "best plant nurseries in Scotland" and Abriachan popped right up to the top of the results list. Hamish there was very helpful and quickly responsive to my email inquiry requesting a gift certificate, and made it very easy to process and ensure that the certificates would be equally easy for our friends to pick up at the store. This is one of my all time favourite places for coffee in East Lothian. I love walking through the…read morenursery to reach the tea room, and I am even happier when I arrive and see the trays of delicious cakes and fabulous scones. The tea room is housed in the old boiler room of Smeaton House (now sadly long gone). It is not smart but it is very relaxed and cosy, the staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the baking never disappoints. I also really like the fact that the nursery is just that wonderful plants, none of the usual 'garden centre' ephemera. The nursery staff are also extremely welcoming. I recommend Smeaton unreservedly except that I don't want it to become too popular as I love its peaceful atmosphere!

Their peonies as you would expect are a fine display an worth every penny. Look for other perennials and it is a different story. the walled garden is full of plants, many of them are pot pound and full of weeds. It looks as if the place is just too big for the number of staff employed. So stick to the peonies if shopping at Binny plants.

This shop is a great place to buy...well.....anything for you house at pretty good prices…read more The shop itself isn't too well organised and it does kind of feel a little bit like a warehouse than a shop and that there are things falling off lorries and ending up in boxes on the shelves. But when you get in and get a good root around, you'd be surprised at just what is on offer. There is pretty much everything that you'd need for a small garden and it's certainly cheaper than big retail park sized shops like B&Q. From bulbs, to spades, to blinds, to table cloths, to lamps and even dog food - this shop has it all. If you see something that you like or think you need then there is no point in putting it off until buying it the following weekend though as the turnaround of the stock is so quick that there's little chance the same item will be there. You have been warned!
