Uncle Kurt's is a tiny one room cocktail dive bar in a back alley under a multistorey carpark just across from the old Parramatta Mall not far from the old Roxy. They've gone with a New York theme with heavily graffitied walls, hip hop beats & deli style sandwiches, meats & jaffles. The cocktail list is split into 3 sections of classics, modern & creamy all coming in a shade under $20 a pop created by genuine experienced mixologists. If cocktails aren't your go they also have a mixture of craft beers, a variety of wine & of course straight up spirits. Staff are all friendly, knowledgeable & happy to help.

We did not have a reservation, but they fit us in as a walk-in at a small coffee table with 2 ottoman seats. Not the most comfortable set up, but I appreciate the cozy atmosphere, almost like you are sitting in someone's very posh and dimly lit den. All the NOLA classics were featured, like Vieux Carre (no likey), old fashioned (likey), and hurricane. There were some twists on the classics as well. I liked the newer house specialties, and ended up having 3 drinks, more than I intended. We snacked on some popcorn chicken, which was nothing special, but very satisfying when hungry. We were also lucky enough to be there when the live jazz band played a brief set, which really set the mood. I took off a star because not every drink was a homerun, and the service was a bit too impersonal for a speakeasy. We had a different server each time. One of my favorite parts of going to a speakeasy is to watch the bartenders work their magic and ask them for recommendations, and if I'm lucky, maybe get an off menu drink. Not quite set up that way here.

It did not disappoint. It is a lively, beautiful and classy space with amazing service and interesting cocktails. The theme is based on the Rat pack of the 50s and 60s and they do a great job of that concept. The menu is a bit complicated but it's all about the cocktails. I had the James Bond, a gin martini that met all my martini expectations. It's a great experience and one everyone should try when you visit Sydney.

And from now on that's the only place I'd choose. The bar men, dressed in their 20's garb, engaged, dressed up their cocktails and put on a show. Front row seat. I went to check it out, stay for a drink but got caught up and stayed for 6 hours. Laughed the time away with strangers I met seated beside me. Cocktails were delicious and creative. The food menu was select and very tasty. The hosts/staff, made it easy and helped guide me through what I might want. Not a cheap night but I got what I payed for and left more than satisfied. I'll be bringing more guests as I love to show off my city.

Big thick rope hangs from ceilings and walls. There a upraised chairs similar to those found on old ships and wooden beaming running throughout. Moonshine specialises in 16 ciders on tap and over 100 rums. It opened on September 1st and we are there on a Sunday evening and its heaving with the summer keen in platforms, denim cutoffs and mini skirts. The night is reggae and the crowd is enjoying the beats. We grab our Batlow Cider's (look out for these folks they are very good Summer beverage) and settle for a wooden crate to enjoy the music. Its a nice and much needed change from the Shore Club, Sugar Reef, Wharf Bar and the likes even if the same demographics grace Moonshine with their presence. Im not sure if this crowd will appreciate the variety of rums but its location is premium on Manly beachfront and Im sure the masses will be rollicking in this bar for summer 2011/2012.
