My story starts out positively and ends in humiliation and misery.
It's a big step for me to get a manicure. As a guy, I have never done that. But I had a bad habit of biting my nails and as I was approaching my tenth wedding anniversary I thought I would surprise my wife and, finally, try to beat this habit. I had emailed the salon and they responded back very quickly and wonderfully and put me in touch with their nail technician, Robyn, who was wonderful. Over the course of several months, I went to her several times and she worked magic with my nails. I was able to break my bad habit (mostly) and my nails looked better than ever. We celebrated our actual anniversary and my wife was very surprised - and pleased.
Time elapsed.
Several months passed and it was getting closer to a trip that I was taking my wife on for our anniversary celebrated a few months prior. With the new job I have, I can't call during the day (company policy forbids it and, besides, I am in a virtually no-cell-signal area). So, I sent some emails explaining that and asking if I could set up an appointment via email with Robin and I listed a bunch of times. No one responded. I tried to email again several days later. No one responded. I think I even tried a third time later and no one responded.
So, I thought I would call. I don't get off of work until midnight. I called thinking I could at least leave a message explaining my situation in a voicemail and maybe they would then be able to check/respond to the email. I was surprised that at 12:38am in the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, March 14 that someone actually answered the phone. I was taken aback but OK. I think there was a party going on because there was a lot of noise and loud voices in the background. A gentleman - a guy - answered the phone. I tried to explain my situation just to ask how I can make an appointment given I can't talk during the day. Would I do it now in these extreme off-hours or could someone check their email as I had sent several. After I explained all that, he just laughed and I could hear him making fun of me to the rest of the group and passed the phone off to someone else. A girl this time came to the phone and I tried to explain again my situation and again she put the phone down, but didn't hang up, and started making fun of me again to others like can you believe this guy calling this late to make an appointment. I was mortified and embarrassed. It is a big step for me to get a manicure in the first place let alone to be made fun of, let alone to be made fun of in a group.
If they were closed, why did they answer the phone? If they were partying, why would they answer the phone? If they did answer the phone, why would they be so emasculating and mean? All I wanted to do was to DISCRETELY set up a manicure appointment before my anniversary trip but as I couldn't call during the day, I needed to find some other way of doing it - so I thought I would email initially (was ignored after 2-3 emails over the course of several, several days) and then call even in off-hours to at least leave a voicemail (and then had the phone answered, was passed around to several others, and made fun of.).
I just couldn't believe it - what started out as a real good experience deteriorated into mortification, being ignored, and mocked. I still just can't believe it. read more
