You could easily spend an entire day here and walk several miles without covering the same area twice. They have over 11,000 acres of swamp/marsh, grassland and wooded areas. Bring your camera for some beautiful nature shots. They have a few benches around the park for you to rest/relax. A portion of the nature area used to be a rice plantation. The visitors center adjacent to the parking lot provides a little history for those interested, and has a few items for sale. Bathrooms are available. Pets and bikes are prohibited. Bring bug spray! During our visit we saw several alligators, lizards, squirrels, baby toads, turtles, one small snake, a marsh rat/mouse (who wasn't remotely scared of us), and of course many birds. Be aware you can encounter alligators on the trails and low boardwalks, and there's nothing separating you from them; a very friendly nature center employee said they never have incidents, but the risk is higher in the Spring when males are vying for females. And if you see very young baby gators, remember mom may be nearby.

There is also a marker pointing out the early history of the area and some more recent activities. The marker reads on the front, "Anderson Field. This airfield, the first in Colleton County, was built and dedicated in 1933 on 60 acres leased to the town of Walterboro by the estate of C. C. Anderson, for whom it was named. By 1937 the town purchased the field and its 3 unpaved landing strips. Local, state, and federal sources combined to fund a large hangar and paved runways by 1941. The U.S. Army Air Corps leased the field from the town in early 1942 and purchased an additional 3,712 acres to create a new Walterboro Army Air Field." On the reverse, "Walterboro Army Air Field. The Walterboro Army Air Field, opened in August 1942, was a sub-base of the Columbia Army Air Base and the largest sub-base in the 3rd Air Force. It served as a final training base for pilots prior to overseas duty and housed a military population of as many as 6,000 as well as hundreds of German POWs. When the base closed after the war the field was deeded back to Walterboro and Colleton County. What a fun day playing the new disc golf course just off I-95 in Walterboro, SC - Palmetto Chains!…read moreThis beautiful 18 hole disc golf course is on a historic wooded property that's been in the owner's family for over three generations. This course is well marked and thoughtfully challenging while remaining fun to play. There are remnants of the past such as sawmill ruins, tree forts, an old plant nursery, and an old boat. I saw wildflowers growing and heard many different kinds of birds singing. It makes each hole a new discovery. Homemade benches and signs are conveniently placed. The fully stocked pro shack was built in the 1940s as the home of the family that ran the old sawmill. There is a clean porta potty at the start which I really appreciated! Only $5.00 to play for the day and plenty of options for payment. The Ace Board at the pro shack is a nice touch. I hope to visit again soon!

The bathrooms are fairly old, but always immaculate. The showers are incredible for a campground. The water is always as hot as you want, and it can be run for as long as you like.
