The Sandhills Woman's Exchange began in 1923 when a group of women got together to help those in…read moreneed. It allowed women to earn an income and sell their handcrafted products, whether it be quilts or jams and jellies or canned goods. They eventually found the log cabin that was built in 1823 that was near a grist mill. It has been operating continuously ever since with the help of volunteers with the goal of helping others help themselves. The Sandhills Woman's Exchange is part of the Federation of Woman's Exchanges. There are currently 15 of them remaining in the United States. There is a parking lot that I missed as the spots in front were filled. It is to the right, soon after you pull in, before the cabin. I ended up in a different lot and walked back up to the log cabin. I will know for my next visit. Besides the gift shop filled with wonderfully crafted, unique items from pottery to crochet to garden items, to wood crafts and so much more, there is a café. The café is cute and rustic. The menu has soups and salads, sandwiches and quiches. I went with the special which was a shrimp pasta salad. I chose a side salad and it came with a flattened roll that had cheese on it. Everything was delicious and remember to save room for dessert. I got a slice of hummingbird cake. This was such a special and unique place to visit.

Not my family, a close friend's mom passed away from a sudden illness and the family knows the people at Boles. I was impressed with how professional the receiving room was set up with everyone's flowers around. I didn't know my friend's mom so I opted not to head over to that side of the room for the viewing. Plenty of parking and the room was large enough to accommodate all of us standing around and visiting with the family. A few sofas and chairs were also available along the walls. I know I will eventually need such a service and while I would want to put that off as long as possible, if I were in Pinehurst I would choose Boles. If you're reading this and making a similar choice, I'm sorry that you're here but I think you'll be okay with the way this business operates.

Many of the businesses in Southern Pines welcome dogs; however, it's not often I find a dog friendly bookshop. It was nice to walk through the shop with my dog and he liked all the extra attention. I quickly found the book I was looking for, unfortunately it was quite pricy. I'm usually fine paying more for things if sold by a local bookshop, but this was more than I planned to spend. Overall, a good place to check out while in Southern Pines.
