The Sandhills Woman's Exchange began in 1923 when a group of women got together to help those in need. It allowed women to earn an income and sell their handcrafted products, whether it be quilts or jams and jellies or canned goods. They eventually found the log cabin that was built in 1823 that was near a grist mill. It has been operating continuously ever since with the help of volunteers with the goal of helping others help themselves. The Sandhills Woman's Exchange is part of the Federation of Woman's Exchanges. There are currently 15 of them remaining in the United States. There is a parking lot that I missed as the spots in front were filled. It is to the right, soon after you pull in, before the cabin. I ended up in a different lot and walked back up to the log cabin. I will know for my next visit. Besides the gift shop filled with wonderfully crafted, unique items from pottery to crochet to garden items, to wood crafts and so much more, there is a café. The café is cute and rustic. The menu has soups and salads, sandwiches and quiches. I went with the special which was a shrimp pasta salad. I chose a side salad and it came with a flattened roll that had cheese on it. Everything was delicious and remember to save room for dessert. I got a slice of hummingbird cake. This was such a special and unique place to visit. read more
