Bert's - Deadly attic full of vintage chairs worth reconditioning.

We just moved to the area and I was looking for a wood stove and was directed to Berts. No wood…read morestove yet, but I found this amazing antique lamp. It worked and was reasonably priced. This is one of those places where there are so many hidden gems. Every corner has a surprise or some fascinating item. They had a collection of antique Jim Beam bottles in the store on the day I bought my lamp as well as some solid wood bedroom furniture. I have added on their Facebook so I can keep and eye out for my wood stove and any other goodies I can find.

For the most part, they have a lot of school furniture, kids' desks, bookshelves, etc. LOTS of old side chairs. I felt like most everything I saw was priced very reasonably. There is a corner of the store labeled "Pat's Project Pile" where you could find chairs and a few other furniture items for $5. If your thing is refurbishing old pieces, then this is your place! The couple working there was nice and friendly, offered to help us but didn't hover, and invited us back another time. A would-be 4 star review was reduced to 3 due to feeling like I may have narrowly escaped my own death in the upstairs of this old building. Many of the floor boards are cracked, creaking, and shaky. Holes in the floor were covered with a thin sheet of plywood or cardboard in some cases. And to make it all the more challenging... there were no lights! I had to use the flashlight app on my phone to get around. I'm not a prude by any means, and I don't mind getting dirty in the dustiest of flea markets and the like, but this was just unsafe.

NC 211 suggests this place for "emergency assistance"...saying they "Offers emergency financial…read morehelp with rent and utilities. Not able to help with deposits. Payment goes directly to the vendor. Limited funding available." However their website does not list financial assistance as a service they provide. I called but got no answer. I was close by so I stopped in and asked if they could help me. I am single parent that has been living pay check to pay check for years. I lost my job due to disability discrimination and needed help paying rent while I looked for new work. I was given a thick stack of invasive paperwork that me and my landlord had to fill out. I noticed on the paperwork that it said they preferred you had an eviction notice but they would "consider" helping you if you didn't have one. An eviction notice was what I was trying to prevent. I had no extra money and I have no printer. I had to use my sons piggy bank money to pay at the library for the paperwork to be printed that the Salvation Army needed. I brought back the paperwork the next day and asked how long it would take to get help since rent was due soon. The receptionist said I'd hear back in "a few days." I had few more questions and the reception went to get Robin, the woman who supposedly handles this paperwork. It was in this conversation that I learned the Salvation Army, if they chose to help, would only give *up to* $300. My rent was almost $1200. This would not prevent an eviction (and if I was late it wouldn't even cover the late fee) but I had already worked on the paperwork and hoped I could find more help elsewhere, so I went ahead with the paperwork submission. I was told their process was to approve it locally and then send it to Raleigh for them to approve it and I'd hear back. After several business days went by I heard nothing and called. No answer. Left a voicemail. A few more days went by and my voicemail was never returned and I was never called. I went to their office where a different receptionist told me this process took "weeks." This was VERY different from what the other person said. And if I had had an eviction notice I don't see how $300 WEEKS after an eviction noticed...I'd already be evicted. I left a hand written message with the receptionist to give to Robin, who wasn't there, asking her to call me. She never called. It's been over a month since I submitted paperwork. I was never contacted or helped. I have lost my apartment and me and my son are now homeless.
