Even when baking, we learned so many tips about baking these marvelous French Macarons
    Susan L.

This review is for the French Macarons baking class. First bonus point, I was lucky to be able and register for this class on the same day. Their classes get full. It truly was a great informational class and fun. My first thought is it's pricey but after going through the class, we gained so many priceless tips, knowledge and hands on techniques that your first attempt at home, after class, will be successful. The two chefs were great, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive to give everyone help when baking. Also we get to bring some fantastic Macarons home to the family. The class only allows 6 students at a time to allow social distancing. There are hand sanitizers and wet naps at each station. They also sanitize the stations between and after the mixing, piping and filing of the Macarons. I already signed up for my next class and look forward to many more!

Had a great time taking the beginner cake decorating class with Natalie. She was kind, great at teaching technique and gave us good background so we can replicate at home. I would recommend this class to pretty much anyone! No prior skills necessary. They provide everything and you get to take the cake home. Yum! I came alone and it's always nerve wrecking going to places alone but I ended up having a great time!!

Give Me Some Sugar was a fun place to spend a Saturday morning! A friend and I signed up for Basic Cake Decorating, which was scheduled for 10:00am-12:30pm, and then loved it so much we came back for a macaron class a few weeks later! Pro-Tip: Get there early and snag the front row :) Class sizes range from 8-12, and everyone works at a table set for two. BASIC CAKE DECORATING: We started by learning to put a crumb coat, and then we put our cakes in the fridge for a while to set. In the meantime we learned how to fill a piping bag, and practiced many, MANY different techniques. Chef Alekka would teach 2-3 different designs (roses, stars, pearls, etc) and then would send us back to try. At the time, we were just practicing on parchment paper, not wrecking our real cakes yet! For the last 45-minutes we had free range to our cake and 5-6 different buttercream colors to use for piping. MACARONS: We started by practicing the macaron shells, and working with egg whites and piping. It's a very delicate, precise art that takes a lot of patience. Chef Alekka even let us dye them different colors! Then we moved on to the filling, in which we made four different flavors: Nutella, PB&J, lemon curd, and salted caramel. There are tons of other options available as well, including mint, peach preserves, coconut, and many more! We spent time putting them together very carefully, and ended up taking home a huge box of about 16, which values at about $40. Given the price of the class, it's a total steal to go home with so many! Overall, the time FLIES BY when you're at Give Me Some Sugar. Everyone is so engaging and fun that I truly enjoy every second! I would highly suggest snagging a Groupon and getting over to Give Me Some Sugar ASAP! I know I personally have my eye on the Advanced Cake Decorating class next... especially because when you grab a punch card, you get the 5th class free :) Win, win!

We did the basic cake decorating class. The class size is a maximum of 12 people which is an appropriate amount. I thought the timing of the class was perfect, and it moved along nicely. The instructor was the owner, she knows her stuff! It made me appreciate all the effort that goes into cake decorating. There were so many things that I was doing wrong that I never knew! They only provide chocolate cakes for the class. I wish they had dates that did vanilla instead. I would definitely try out another class! The taste of the cake was ok not amazing. You're more here for the actual decorating then a great tasting cake, IMO.

This is my new favorite place! I signed up for a basic cake decorating class with 2 of my friends, and it was so much fun! Natalie demonstrated the techniques for us, and walked around for encouragement to help keep our cakes straight. I can't wait to take my next class here, although it's hard to decide which to take next! Buttercream on my mind...

    Boozy Bakes treats!

I've been to two GMSS classes. One was just a week and a half ago (Boozy Bakes), another was years ago (cupcake decorating). Both times were really fun and positive things activities. A great unique way to spend the night! Cupcake Decorating: this was a really hands-on class that let us decorate 6 cupcakes, which we could take home. We practiced certain decorating shapes, then re-used the icing for the cupcakes. Because all the class was spent decorating, there wasn't time spent on making cupcakes or frosting. Boozy Bakes: in 2 hours, we made four great treats: blondies, a cookie tart, "tartlets," and cupcakes. All had alcohol in them. The class was a well-oiled machine, and we learned both recipes and techniques (rolling out tart pastry, making icing cones out of parchment paper, etc.) we made a LOT in the 2 hour period, so sometimes we had to share baking duties. COVID note: masks were required in class. 8 people were in our class total (though maybe that was always the case for classes). The small class was nice because 1. Safety, and 2. It meant the instructor could come along and offer guidance. Apparently GMSS has been around for 11 years. Hopefully they are around another 11 years or more!

An awesome place to spend a Friday night! I took my best friend here as a surprise for her birthday and we both LOVED it!!! We took the BYOB & Cupcake Decorating class. Jerry was super funny and the atmosphere was relaxed and laid back. Good music was playing and after learning a few tricks we were let go to do our own thing and talk amongst ourselves. I can't wait to take more classes here. I would definitely recommend.

Had a lot of fun having some work team bonding time at this spot while decorating cupcakes. It's a cozy, independent operation and the owner/instructor was sweet as pie (or cupcakes) in helping us set up, giving us some basic instructions, and letting us have fun. There aren't many fancy contraptions or ingredients to use with our cupcakes, which is just fine for a group of beginners. Instead you'll get some different color frosting and a sprinkle bar to bedazzle your baked goodies. At the end of the class you'll each take home 6 cupcakes. Yes, that's EACH! Some people said they found their cupcakes to be dry, but mine were just fine to me. Of course most of that gorgeous frosting was scraped off because it was way too sweet to eat with all the decor, but the yellow, chocolate, and red velvet were all tasty for me (and i'm ashamed to admit I tried them all). A nice option for a party or team building activity in the area for sure!

It was great since we all got to do more and hear better than with a normal larger group. Our Southern menu consisted of collard greens with pancetta, skillet jalapeno-cheddar cornbread, mustard potatoes with onions, and the most amazing flank steak + tomato chutney. Seriously, I'm still mentally drooling over this chutney! I can't wait to make it again! For dessert, lemon curd mousse. Delicious It was really nice to have our actual meal at a dinner table that was thoughtfully decorated and put together (versus in the kitchen around the stainless steel). We really had an amazing night and loved learning some new skills, recipes, and flavors. Looking forward to going back for a different menu!

An unforgettable cooking class--pure joy from start to finish!…read more I cannot rave enough about this cooking class. Four friends and I signed up on a whim, and it turned into one of the most memorable evenings we've had together in ages. The highlight was learning how to make fresh fettuccine from scratch--yes, from scratch--and somehow the instructor Jason made the whole process feel both totally doable and ridiculously fun. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and buzzing with good energy. Jason was patient, hilarious, and incredibly knowledgeable, guiding us through every step without ever making it feel intimidating. Before long, we were kneading dough, rolling it out like pros, and cheering each other on as our pasta strands got longer and more impressive. And the best part? Sitting down together at the end to enjoy the meal we created. The pasta was unbelievably fresh--silky, tender, and honestly better than many restaurant dishes I've had. Unfortunately, we ate so fast. We forgot to take a picture! Sharing that meal with friends made it even more special. After we ate, we were entertained by the fabulous Yuiza Beach! A local entertainer from Rogers Park. She was funny and charismatic, and kept us in stitches the whole time! Her performance was as fabulous as she was If you're looking for a unique, hands-on experience that blends learning, laughter, and seriously delicious food, this class is a must. We left full, happy, and already planning our next visit. Highly, highly recommended!

We started off with about a half hour of mingling, getting setup with drinks (BYOB) and the provided fresh baked bread with assorted cheeses, then all gathered around the large U-shaped island that would be our workspace. As others have mentioned, this isn't a you-cook-everything for your meal type of experience, rather, every step is demonstrated by the instructor then a few people in the class will take turns performing it while others move on to other steps. My class was the Bavette menu, which was (I'm not even going to attempt to write out the french titles for these) a bacon and mushroom puff pastry, sous-vide flank steak with duck fat roasted potatoes and Bearnaise sauce, and a chocolate lava cake for dessert. The food was fantastic. An absolutely amazing meal. But really the best part about this whole experience was the people and the group interaction. Throughout the night, we all got to know each other and had a bunch of fun working together. There was tons of laughter and it was an all around great time. It culminated in us sitting at a long table and having dinner together. It was also someone's birthday, so we all sang happy birthday. Overall, 10/10 experience! I will DEFINITELY be back. This was one of the best girl's nights we've had in a while, but it would also be great for a date or just a couple of friends. Hell, it would even be a great first date! Oh, and our instructor, Ryan, was incredible. He was hilarious and a great teacher.
