Mr Shegan is AWESOME! His way of handling stressed parent minutes before the big show, his way of engaging kids VIRTUALLY during the shows, my kid and her friends had a great time celebrating my daughter's birthday virtually. Mr Shegan called the day before to walk me through what would happened, so I appreciated the walk-through and gave me a level of comfort despite the backoffice chaos i experienced the last couple weeks. What's really dampening the supposingly-stress-free experience is the back-office arrangement. Some of the highlights below - So the zoom info was given to me when I booked the party back in May. I called a few times to confirm the zoom info a couple weeks prior to the party to make sure what I had on the invite was still correct. What really caused me a bit anxiety is that when they did "confirm" the zoom info with me over on email, the info sent over contains a couple other kids names and one of their party information. Granted nothing really personal was shared, but this made me wonder how they handles guest information in general. The day of the party, apparently, the guests and I were in a different zoom room from Mr Shegan's, the "registration" page we were sent to had a different party date/time options to pick from, which confused a lot of us. Many parents were texting me just few mins before the party while I was confused myself, and not sure what happened since it was slightly different from what Mr Shegan told me the day before. I think there's a change of personnel post-sales coz I couldn't reach the person who I contacted during the sales to confirm all the logistics. Everytime I contacted KSL, I reached the voicemail, emails were unanswered. Granted they did call you back rather quickly. But that's kinda annoying and added extra layer of stress to a planner like me. And suburb buyers be aware - if you want virtual party, kits pick up time is 9-4 in LP. During sales time, the lady told me that they could arrange weekend pickup given I live in the burbs and DO work regular 9-5. But obviously, this didn't happen. We had to make an arrangement for a quick trip to the city. All in all, the experience was 5+ star DURING the party time, but it was less than desired during the planning phase post-sales. My son has spent countless hours at KSL Lincoln Park and has loved every minute. We began when he was three, and he's now six. We have utilized almost every service they have - weekly classes, winter/out of school camps/ summer camps and even the virtual summer camp! We obviously love this place. Post-COVID, he has participated in virtual and in-person camp. The virtual camp exceeded my expectations. I was afraid I'd have to spend the entire time helping him with experiments etc. Not at all. All the materials were shipped to my house and more detailed instructions (really expectations) emailed a few days prior. Really, I just put all the materials they shipped in a container, made sure the computer was plugged in and left him to it. He LOVED it! The entire week my kiddo maybe interrupted me once for work. Usually it was me sneaking downstairs to see what was happening bc I could hear him laughing or music (there's a 10 min snack break after an hour, one kid gets to pick a song - they dance/snack etc). I had my reservations about the virtual camp, but only have great things to say about it. My kitchen is a mess afterwards, but that happens anyway. In-person has also been good - temperature checks, masks, kids spaced out at tables. Everyone is obviously taken whatever precautions they can. Also, I appreciate everyone's flexibility. We had some last minute scheduling changes, but Keith and his team were beyond helpful and accomodating. KSL has given my son some sense of normalcy the past few months and it's very much appreciated. read more

I really like KSL. We have been coming here on and off for several years. We have even attended summer camp at the new location in Wheaton. Why the two star review? Because I am tired of the terrible attitude from the front desk receptionist. TIRED. OF. IT. She has dark hair, typically pulled into a pony tail and wears glasses. I have no idea what her name is but every time I have approached the desk for literally ANYTHING she has been argumentative and defensive. So, once our 3-month expires, we will no longer be coming to this location. Update: I added an two additional stars because the owner, Keith, contacted me and was a genuinely warm and caring individual. He spent time talking with me to find out what the issue was and showed real concern that a client of KSL was unhappy. That is customer service that cannot be beat. I still stand by the above review in terms of the receptionist's behavior but it is great to know I can reach out to Keith with any further instances. If your kid is just a little curious in the why or how, bring them here. read more

BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE I don't get what happen here. I am not quite sure and I am trying to process the craziness of the kids science lab. I will tell you the best thing about the kids birthday party here was the parents served wine and beer. Now that is what gets 5 stars but that is more for the parents thinking about there guests, then the scientist wanting to party. The party was suppose to be two hours long. It started at 2:30 and the staff let the kids play by themselves with toys in the lobby. They actually did not invite the kids in until 2:50 to start there experiment. The party was suppose to end at 4:30 but the final volcano was finished by 4:10pm and parents were starting to leave. So the party was closer to 80 minutes and not the 120 minutes I expected. The reason I point that out is because I feel bad for the parents not getting there moneys worth. If I threw the party I would have wanted non-stop blinding science experiments that filled up the whole 2 hours. I decided to look at the website and apparently this is there policy for the Big Birthday Blowout but at $975 that seems a little pricey Do not get me wrong the staff was very nice and very attentive with all of the kids. I would give them 5 stars on being happy and fun plus there were wearing cool white lab coats. There were 3 staff working with the kids and one manager. So why my 2 stars? I was watching the experiments and it seemed more like a bad science experiment or a show on Nick where you made slime. Yeah it was messy. The kids hands were covered. Luckily they provided plastic jackets for the kids or else it would have been a real mess. The second room was even weirder. At first glance it looked like a mafia hit because it was covered in plastic. The kids went in here and were encouraged to whip tomatoes at the wall. Now it would have been exciting if the tomatoes actually splattered but they seemed really hard and kind of bounced back at the kids. Again I kind of found this experiment strange. The third room was the birthday cake and the finale was the volcano in the lobby, which consisted of a Coke Bottle, mentos and a plastic tarp around a PVC tripod. It happen so fast that if you blinked you missed it. My poor wife missed it because she was busy getting invited to another kids birthday party. So for a kids birthday party this was the strangest event I've ever been to. Would I throw a party here? Probably not! Would my kid want a party here? Yes. There is also free parking which is a great feature but a total nightmare in the Whole Foods parking lot on a Sunday. The lot was a mess. So yeah I'm confused as to where to go with my rating. Personally I would never throw a party here and it is purely based on price vs what you get. For $975 I think I'd like a rocket launch or something. So my 2 stars is for the value and I just didn't see any. I would give the staff 5 stars for there positive attitude with the kids. I would give 5 stars to the appearance of the facility. In closing, its a nice place but I couldn't ever throw a party here. Yeah I'm still blinded by the confusion of what I experienced. read more

My daughter is a KSL groupie. She'd take classes every day if she could. In fact she has such a great time that we decided to share it with her friends for her 4th birthday party. And that was an awesome idea. KSL will custom design your party based on your child's interests and make the whole event super-convenient. I didn't have to set up/pick up/ pick out anything; just had to enjoy the event. 4 is a tough age for attention spans and while KSL has an open-play area with lots of fun toys, the kids stayed really engaged the whole time, making gooey messes and seeing giant bubbles. Even the parents were really entranced by a lot of the activities. I think what makes KSL different from so many other programs (and we've tried them all) is the staff. The teachers are incredible and have the patience of saints. The programming is original, creative and designed appropriately for the age of the children. The kids come home talking about water displacement and friction and they're excited to share the activities of the day. Free parking is definitely a plus too. read more

Talk about igniting my child's desire to learn, explore, and grow in STEM! You absolutely see what you are paying for each day when your child comes home full of new ideas and doesn't stop talking about them until you put her to bed. We have been going to KSL on and off for about two years and this summer we enrolled our daughter in a 3 week camp. Each week a new topic was covered: dinosaurs v. animals, engineering, and astronauts/space. I can attest that each day was packed with experiments and builds that made science accessible. 1. Teachers and staff are kind, attentive, and educated. KSL is creative about learning and definitely provides a hands on experience. The teachers & staff show patience with the children and a passion for what they are exploring/teaching each day. This is definitely a differentiator from other camps we've attended/researched. Every person I encountered at KSL knew my child by name and was by my standards professional & helpful. 2. The quality of the subject matter & builds is unlike any other place we've taken our daughter. It feels like the curriculum is designed to allow kids to ask questions and learn through hands on projects, reading, and experiments - (these are the things your child will not stop talking about for days...) 3. The materials used in these projects is so inventive. This year my daughter built a Mars Rover model that is truly better than anything I could have constructed... and she's 5! Each day I was impressed with the magnitude of engineering and creativity used in the projects that came home... yes there's still goo and snake venom but the fact that my daughter could talk about what snake venom does to blood blew me away... she took an understanding away from the cool experiments - it's wasn't just about making something slimy or gooey. 4. Location: KSL has parking in the Whole Foods North Ave. parking garage. This is an awesome thing for anyone toting around a second child (like me.) It's truly an easy in and out and their building is very secure. I never left my daughter feeling concerned or worried about her safety. Honestly, if you child has any spark for creativity (which I think they all do) try out a Saturday drop-in class. I think they sell packs so that you don't have to commit to being there every weekend if your schedule is nuts. It's an experience you won't find anywhere else. Last, but not least, here's the true testament to how great this place is: We commuted from Jefferson Park (Foster Ave.) to KSL on I-90 during rush hour for 3 weeks... yeah, it's that good. read more

Not every child is cut out for soccer or t-ball. For kids who are more "cerebral," this place is a dream. It doesn't require any level of physical coordination, and there's no "winning" or "losing." The kids just work together, with one of the amazing instructors, to solve a problem or learn something cool. My four year old son has been coming here for a couple of months now, and he adores it. He talks about science class all week, and he has even started referring to himself as a scientist! His instructor is a biologist by training; but in practice, she's more like a first grade teacher. She's incredibly sweet, patient and encouraging with the younger children. He always comes out of class with such excitement and enthusiasm for whatever they've learned. Now for the details. Classes run for 12 week sessions, though you can pay a drop-in fee to take single classes without having to commit to a full session. The classes are drop-off and run for about an hour and fifteen minutes. They take place in one of three lab rooms, which have kid-sized tables and lab coats (my son's favorite part!), along with all of the necessary science equipment. In addition to the weekly classes, there are also a couple of open play sessions each week where the kids can come in and play with all of the educational toys in the lobby. Now for the price. I think we paid around $300 for the 12 week session, which sounds like a lot. But, folks--you get what you pay for. And here, that means a beautiful, sun-filled facility, built with natural materials, and top-notch instructors who have a genuine passion for teaching kids. I feel so lucky to have found a place where my child doesn't have to worry about coming in last every time he tries to participate. Here, his curiosity and effort are rewarded at every turn. It's made him excited about learning and confident in his problem-solving abilities. We will continue taking classes here as long as he's interested (which I expect will be a long time). read more

My kids are more than halfway through a 10-week class with KSL and have truly enjoyed each class. The teachers are enthusiastic and truly engaged and seem to be up for anything--inside and outside of class, which is an important detail, I think. In fact, anyone you come into contact with there, whether it's the founders or any of the other teachers or administrators, is extremely friendly and helpful and willing to go the extra mile to make your experience the best it can be. The class itself has been extremely well thought out and is as fun as it is educational. Their particular class focuses on castles and catapults and will use the 10 weeks to learn about the principles behind building both, culminating in building a tower which they will try to destroy with their catapults/trebuchets. Each class has focused on a different aspect of science/design/economics, etc, related to castles/towers/catapults. They have built with Magna Tiles, Legos, Tinker Toys, toothpicks, spaghetti, marshmallows, rubberbands and popsicle sticks. They have envisioned towers and built them, watched slideshows of the world's tallest towers, learned about building materials and cost for building each one. They've had marshmallow battles with homemade hand-held catapults. They've worked as a class to build strong structures with a good foundation, a tall tower, and a catapult attached. Last week, they were running and jumping (and sometimes sliding) on a giant beanbag, which was clearly fun for all. When I asked the boys what that part of class was about, they looked at me with a sort of "duh, mom" expression and explained that they were human trebuchets, that they were using their weight as they jumped on the bean bags to make a small block bounce up into the air. I cannot think of a more perfect space (for that in itself is breathtaking and deserves its own review) to be free to build and explore and play and ask questions and test out their own answers and most of all, to have fun, which is the very best way to learn anything, in my opinion. read more

I came here for two separate field trips with a 6th grade class and a 5th grade class. The sixth grade class did the electricity experiment, where you build a little house out of foam and connect a light switch to it. The 5th grade class did parachutes. We built our own and tested to see if it could keep an egg from breaking from a certain height. It is a really cool place for the kids to learn. The drive from Winnetka took awhile, but it was well worth it. read more

2012 - First Review Our kids (ages 4 and 5) wake up on Saturday morning and say "Can I have chocolate chip pancakes?" and "Do we get to go to Science Class, today?" They love KSL Chicago almost as much as chocolate chip pancakes. Curriculum is strong and they keep parents outside of the classroom (you can watch through windows) so that kids can really get involved in the learning and experimenting process. We also had a birthday party at KSL. It was great. Kids all had a great time. Parents were free to speak to each other. Whole Foods can caterer food for kids and adults, so it's very easy on the hosting parents. 2013 - UPDATE As a update, we moved from Chicago to Florida, but came back for part of the summer - enrolling our kids into a couple of the KSL science camps. The place is still amazing. Our kids (now 5 and 6) were there from 8:30am until around 3:00pm --- and we couldn't drag them away at the end of the day. Our son would say "15 more minutes ... PLEASE!?!?! I'm making a (plane, light saber, ....) with Mr. Shegan." They are opening a second location in the South Loop, but they should come way farther south, to Florida. read more

My daughter had her birthday party at KSL this past October and it was awesome. The staff was accommodating and creative and able to manage the growing number of 4-6 year olds that attended. ALL the kids loved the experiments and were equally engaged and entertained. The planning was easy and Whole Foods as a catering option made our life easy. They were even thoughtful enough to give us a card offering congrats on our new born baby. If you are considering a cool and unique place to throw a party-you should really talk to the folks over at KSL. These guys make science so fun! read more

Actual conversation with my 2 year old yesterday after I got home from work: Q: What did you learn about in science today? A (with glee and excitement): Rain and clouds and blue water and pipettes and shaving cream! Then she asked me to sing the Kids Science Labs song, and when I was done she said "Let's get some tools!" This is by far the highest quality toddler class that my child has gone to. She learns so much, and the experiments the kids do are interesting and age-appropriate. Her teacher Miss Katharine is so kind, enthusiastic, and encouraging with the kids. I will be sending my child here for a long time, and her little sister some day too. read more

My 8 year old daughter has been taking classes at KSL for over a year. KSL is not just a class. It's a place where kids are encouraged to ask questions, explore, and have fun all while learning science. We have taken two years of science classes and have attended about 10 different weeks of summer camp over the last two summers. My daughter, (just turned 5) and son (just turned 3) BEG to go to science. Our daughter is a bit of a wild, athletic child who loves her dolls. We were surprised by how much she has taken to science and it is completely due to the wonderful teachers at KSL. She loves Ms. Nina and Ms. Nina even chatted with her on the phone when I called to book a class. She was elated that she was able to "chat" with her "friend" on the phone and this just demonstrated to me how caring the teachers were at KSL. We have loved each teacher we have had. As for camp, she has attended 9-12 nearly every week this summer and has come home with a series of amazing projects. Our daughter has learned how every part of her body works, has built it using tubes, cups and tape ("Look Mom! My elbow is a hinge joint, my shoulder a ball and socket joint".) and has learned about the earth around her. She is constantly surprising us with her descriptions of daily activity, "Mom, this fell from my hand to the ground because there is GRAVITY that pulls us toward the earth." Not only has she learned, but I am learning too! It's funny how much I have forgotten since middle school science. I had to look up "kinetic energy" and make sure I remembered what it was after she learned about it at camp. Our son has also thrived. At two years old he was learning about attraction and repulsion, symmetry, pushing/pulling, etc. It was age appropriate and he was introduced to basic science terms. He looked forward to his class and loved wearing his lab coat. The classes were creative and fun and ended with an adorable song. We have spent many hours singing this song outside of KSL and I was thankful the amazing owner gave us a printout with the exact wording as my two year old yells at me when I get the words wrong :-) When my mother asked my daughter what she wants to be when she grows up, she answered, "A science teacher". read more

Absolutely one of the best kid centered educational activities in town. The staff are enthusiastic and kind as they lead the children though fun and engaging activities to get them excited about science. What could be better? Fun and learning all under one roof! All I think about everytime I go is why can't science be this fun in school, so more children would take an interest? They have a unique ability for capturing the kids' attention and do projects that even I find fun and often learn something from as well. The space is also very large and brightly lit with natural sunlight, which is just a bonus really, to an already great place to bring the kids. We had my 4 year old daughter's party there this weekend and had a great time! the space is big enough for at least 15 kids and parents were free to move around the space- there was a smaller play space for the little ones to play as well. The staff was helpful and the science guys kept the kids engaged. The science experiments were age appropriate- some other reviewers stated the science wasn't that in depth, but for a party of 3-5 year olds it was enough! the parties can be 1.5-2 hrs and themes depend on the age of the kids. they provide plates and plastic ware, all you need to bring is decorations food and cake. They don't allow alcohol now (boo!) but that would have made it even more fun for the parents Parking was free in the whole foods lot. they only do parties on SUNDAY, as on SAT they run classes for kids. Party times are 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm There is only 15 min turnaround time between parties but it worked out well. read more

The best place to host a birthday party. My son's 6th biirthday was a hit with the kids and the parents. Kids were focused learning about solid versus liquid, but alos laughing at the engaging instructor. Parents felt so comfortable and kids were so into the party, everyone dropped off and left. Some just went to Whole Foods right next door. The staff took care of everything...entertainment, food, setup, goodie bag(includes a free class for each child). KSL was so worth the money. This is the third summer my son has attended a week of camp at Kids Science Lab. In the afternoon, when I go to pick him up, he takes one look at me and frowns. "Oh, I don't want to leave. Can you come back later?" He learned about Carbon yesterday, told me no less than 10 times how much he loves it there. The owners are great. The instructors are engaged and enthusiastic. The place is clean and safe and fun. Don't think twice, sign up your son or daughter and feel comfortable that he or she will learn and have so much fun doing so. If you have a Lego lover - this is your spot. My only beef is that it's so great their classes fill up the day they are available for sign up, so you have to move fast. I wanted another week in the middle of the summer, but it was gone in a second.... read more

We signed up our 8 year old son for the Physiology and Food Science Camp over spring break. On the second day of the camp, it came to my attention that the spring break session was to be on transportation and not on Physiology. We were very confused since the email we had received from Kids Science stated that we were signed up for the Physiology camp. I asked to speak with Shegan. My original comment to him was that I was confused about the camp we were in since we had signed up for Physiology. Unfortunately, his series of responses were those a small business person should never make. 1. He told me I was wrong, since he manages the web and there is no way I could be signed up for the physiology class. 2. After pushing back that we had in fact been signed up for the camp, his response was to go home, find the page on his website that showed the camp was offered and to print it out and show it to him. 3. After finding the email from Kids Science that showed we had been signed up for the Physiology camp, his email response was that their policy stated they could change the course. A couple of points I would like to make as a result of my interaction with Shegan. I am flabbergasted that Kids Science does not know who is signed up for what. This speaks to really bad internal controls and despite Shegan's admonishment that he is in control of the website and its contents, I beg to differ. God only knows if he knows what is going on in his company! Mistakes do happen. Unfortunately, Shegan did everything possible to lose a client and have someone who will share that experience with others. This speaks to the persistent feeling among some parents I have talked to that they are in it only for the money. Unfortunately, Kids Science Labs sounds like a great idea. But it is very worrisome when the owner has such a bad reaction to something that could have been easily addressed. read more

We hosted our son's birthday party here and had a great experience. The staff was great, both when booking but also during the party, and made sure the entire event was seamless and worry-free for us. Everyone working there had a ton of energy and all the kids seemed to enjoy it. It was 90 minutes long (1 hour for experiments and 30 minutes for food and cake), which was perfect timing. There was also plenty of space in the building for parents to mingle and an area for smaller kids to play if they weren't participating in the experiments. read more

Over Spring Break both of my children attended a class at KSL and had a ball! The content of the class was excellent, they learned about structural engineering and earthquakes, and both my kindergartener and preschooler were able to follow along. The instructors were able to appropriately teach the class, called Jake vs. The Quake, to both ages and make it educational, yet fun. The class was highly interactive and the instructors were great with the kids. The owners of KSL went out of their way to ensure that the class met my expectations and that my children enjoyed themselves. The owners embrace the concept of experiential learning and possess a true passion for education. The most positive thing I can say about this incredible program is that my daughter keeps asking when their summer session starts and have I registered her! read more

We started the classes in october of 2013 and since the first day (trial class) Mss Catherine from the South Loop made us so welcome that my son every friday after school wants to be the first in the lab so he can hang out and help the teachers to set up the class. I won't lie. The classes are expensive. But since I spend a ridiculous amount of money on the wonder boy, I guess I can just add it to the list. His organic berry habit alone is quite costly:) They have great classes, with an amazing staff. But the reason I am writing this stellar review is that I accidentally smashed the wonder boy's science project du jour. We stopped back in for a repair job. They could not have been nicer or more patient! His instructor, a nice French gentleman, Erve (forgive my spelling) basically spent the last part of his lunch break helping us repair a now oblong shaped Earth. So, they are the best science guys in town. And spending money to help my child gain a love for science, well, that's money well spent. read more

We recently had our 4 year olds boys birthday party there and it was amazing. The staff was so helpful and accommodating. we have never have seen 30 something 4 year olds sit still for 2 hours and enjoy creating and observing science projects. My five year old son has been going to KSL for almost two years. He has done both the weekly classes and the summer camp, and both have been fantastic! He comes out of class eager to explain what he learned and excited to show the hands on project he made that day. Today he was telling me about "physical chemical reactions" that he learned about in Wizard Chemistry Camp, and we had to test out some of them as soon as we got home. Fun classes for kids of all ages. Excellent teachers, kids have fun and learn too! Our son (4 years old) took three weeks of summer camp - all day sessions. The teachers were excellent, the facilities are great and the topics discussed are fun. Every day he came home with new projects and unlike regular school days, he was eager to discuss his experiments with us. Definitely worth checking out KSL. My daughter has been attending classes at KSL for about 1.5 years. Their approach to science is truly experimentation, rather than demonstrations that one would see at other types of kids spaces. At KSL, they guide the kids towards discovery rather than mastery--which fits my family well. I enjoy my daughter seeing the wonder in how the world works.
