However, coming from someone who lives in nyc, this is def the vibe. A lot of pretty people dressed to the nines with their instagrams ready. We returned for a second experience because our first was so lovely. Unexpected I must say given the thumping music and promise of jungle vibes on the their sign. Both meals were fantastic - tuna tostadas and tuna tiradito were my favorite - beef tacos and ceviche were also big winners. Kisses in the car and the cilantro cocktail were both great! The music didn't stay thumping like a rage but meandered through different genres - it all worked. Well that wasn't as great as I would have hoped. A lot of hype not backed up. The wine list has no prices and we were quoted 1,000 pesos for Malbec that probably cost $8. Some of the dishes were gone. Portions were tiny. It's so overpriced- like $10 for a small baked potato. What a joke. Steak tasted good but it was like $60 and very small. Basically we paid $200 for four person dinner in Mexico. You can usually do that for $70 at a nice place. No more getting tricked into hot spots. I'll stick to yummy cheap Mexican food instead. The ambiance in this place was definitely chic and romantic. I loved the light strings everywhere, the greenery they have on the walls and in between seatings make it the perfect spot to sip a cool drink and enjoy company. I'm a lover of avocados, prepared any kind of way, of course I order the grilled avocado and the catch of the day which was a yellow fish, both were delicious. The fish was grilled and fresh. My fiancé ordered the grilled ribeye which was cooked perfectly (the way he wanted it- medium rare) paired with some greens and fingerling potatoes. 1 star for ambiance 1 extra star just because of Covid and there may be related issues about which I am unaware. Summary:. All surface and no substance The menu is limited, which is fine and to be expected. Tourism is down. It doesn't make sense for a kitchen to stock up a ton of inventory that can potentially go bad. That being said, there's no excuse for price point and execution, especially on a slower night. I had a far better meal the night before at Casa Jaguar where I enjoyed more items that were better executed and my bill was about 33% less The shrimp in the aguachile were clearly old and rubbery. The "agua" had no depth of flavor and was basically just lime juice and chayote, with no herbs or spice coming through. My 700 peso ribeye was a thinly cut, old piece of meat that came out med well instead of med rare. The menu said "roasted tomatillos" which apparently means 1 ounce of bland tomatillos salsa on the side. The Al Pastor Chicken skewers were extremely overcooked and very dry. Whoever was on the grill station needs to be retrained. The cocktails are watered down. I've been in the bar business 15 years and know exactly how much mezcal they ARENT using in that Gitano Margarita. The service staff is young and hip and very unnattentive. There was no checking in with us except when it was time to order and when it was time to bring the check. This may be a Covid policy but everywhere else I've dined, the server will at least quickly come by from a distance to check in. We wouldn't have sent our food back because we don't believe in wasting food that is edible but I would have liked to at least bring these glaring issues to their attention, hence this rare review from me. It's no surprise that Gitano has locations around the globe in other sexy cities/towns. It's one of those chic spots for well-off night lifers that appreciate the appearance of things but have no true understanding of quality. It was cooked perfectly and the grilled vegetables on the side were a welcoming taste. The grilled cauliflower steak was great, grilled perfectly. Breathtaking! This place is absolutely beautiful. Loved the dark ambiance with candles all over the place. I got appetizers the mango ceviche and quesadilla. The food and drinks were tasty! And they do have Vegetarian options for people. I did not see any locals this is definitely a hipster touristy spot. My friend and I joked around that we were the darkest people there (we are Mexican American) hahaha. With that being said everything was great, except the $17 drinks. I had really high expectations for Gitano. I was seduced by the photos in their Instagram account and website, but I soon found out that I was a victim of marketing and had fallen into a tourist trap. This was the worst restaurant in terms of service and quality of food during our entire 10 day stay in Mexico. I had convinced my group of 5 friends to have dinner on a Thursday night. We made a reservation on Open Table for 8pm. PARKING: the restaurant does not offer parking. Our hotel wasn't too far away so we decided to go back, leave the car and take a cab to the restaurant. FYI- taxis in Tulum charge 100 pesos standard fare - even for a 3 minute drive. SERVICE: horrible. The wait staff consisted of pretentious and clueless hipsters. When we were greeted, the host brought us to a table in the centre of the restaurant. I asked if we could get a table with a banquette, and was told that these were reserved. During our whole meal, we didn't see anybody sitting there. The waiter completely forgot about my friend's red wine, which we were all waiting for to say cheers and start drinking. We had to ask what the fish of the day was, instead of being nicely introduced. The waiter didn't know how many grams the rib-eye steak was. Two of my friends ordered the same tacos, and one dish came with sauce, while the other had been forgotten. MENU SELECTION: very limited, and they were already out of the pork belly. FOOD QUALITY: the rib eye was very fatty and not enough to fill you up. The shrimp tacos were very simple without any added garnishes. The Mezcal cocktails were so diluted. PRICES: grossly overpriced for the quality of food and service. I understand that Tulum is a medium- higher end tourist town, but the prices are unjustified. 200 pesos for Mezcal cocktails, 650 pesos for the rib eye. ONLY ACCEPTS CASH: on the menu, it is written that there is a 4% fee to pay by credit card. However, it turns out the system was down and our host had omitted to tell us. Thankfully we had enough on us, but it was definitely challenging to rally enough cash to cover such an expensive meal. OVERALL AMBIANCE: the restaurant was just too dark. I ordered the sea bass which was an entire fish including the bones. I couldn't see my meal at all and had to keep picking out bones from my mouth. There was also a sewer stench that came from the bathrooms but could be smelled elsewhere in the restaurant. Needless to say, this restaurant is on the jungle side of the Tulum Beach Road, which makes it very hot and filled with mosquitos. Basically, if you really can't bypass the chance to take a photo for your Insta, I recommend you go for one cocktail and maybe a round of snacks. Walk there and go early so that you can actually see the nice design. read more

My initial experience upon entering the place was the security guard was a total jackass. We had just left a boutique store and had a shopping bag of clothes with us. The security guard immediately said I can't enter without any reasoning besides pointing to my bag. I asked him why? He said there is no other food allowed into the establishment. Kindly giving a four, we went on a random week night and it was not overly busy. We sat and I put in an appetizer right away since we were hungry, that app didn't come for at least 40 minutes even after asking multiple times. Two people ordered fish (Mahi) it wasnt even edible, smelled so fishy, but they did take it off the check. Not sure this is on my list next time for tulum ! I tried a few but my favorite was ending the night with the Gitano Carajillo (mezcal/cold brew/honey/cacao). Robert, the general manager, and his staff are charming. I was treated like family and it felt so genuine. My first experience was so great I returned a 2nd time during my 4 night stay in Tulum. I couldn't get enough! This restaurant is great, mostly outdoors/jungley with tiki torches, yet has gorgeous chandeliers hanging from trees, and disco balls. The restrooms are like something out of architectural digest with the only lighting being candle light. The cocktails are authentic and exotic. The jungle fever was unique and delicious unlike any combo I've tried before. I also had a cocktail with passion fruit and lime ( I can't remember the name of the drink), but it was SO good. Food wise the chorizo starter was the best chorizo I've ever had, it was topped with a fried egg which complimented the chorizo perfectly. We also had the ceviche starter which I thought was just ok- wasn't the best ceviche I've had. Everyone in my group ordered something different to try it all. I had the chicken entree which was great- I highly recommend. The fish entree was good as well, flavored nicely. Both the chicken and fish portions were huge! We also tried the arugula salad which was nice and refreshing, and the steak which was juicy and good (I'm not a huge red meat fan, but it was cooked and flavored good). We had a beautiful chandelier hanging over us even though we were sitting outside under a tree and lots of twinkling lights stretched through the branches to provide overhead light. I think the positive reviews on here are related to the dining experience (sounds like food is tasty). We unfortunately did not come for dinner and were just grabbing drinks/looking for a fun scene. The atmosphere isn't super conducive to having a positive experience on that front - feels very disorganized, and there's not a great area for folks not eating dinner to hang out (especially as a larger group of 8). I wish they had specialized areas for folks like us/drinks only, and perhaps a bigger dance floor without dining tables near the live music. We ended up leaving after just one drink because it was too effortful to try to order drinks from the crowded bar and find a spot after to enjoy our drink without feeling in the way or crowding diners sitting at tables. That said, the over restaurant is big and ambience/decor varies by area which is pretty fun. Cocktails themselves were pretty solid/tasty - on par with the other nice restaurants in Tulum. read more

This is the worst place to go to in tulum. My boyfriend and i went there for food and it wasn't good and it was overpriced at that. They watered down our drinks as well so I don't think paying $10 for water essentially should be something someone does. tried going in and for the Friday night music and were immediately treated extremely rude and disrespectful. This place is homophobic and should be ashamed for the way they treated us. There was no reason given as to why we couldn't go in when obviously everyone else was fine to go in. Gitano?
