Honest people great prices and fast been there twice and I say on both visits

Extremely irritated. It's been 2 months since Hoven's had my car sent down to Gil's for work. Was able to get it back long enough to drive home. Check engine light came on and O/D started flashing. Of course, we got the blame for it. I understand calling before expected finish time causes a delay in the labor but if it's passed that, the customer has the right to call and check on the status. They don't like that but if Tom had done the job right the first time, my car wouldn't be back in there. Last time, they did not call me when my car was ready for pick up. He blamed Ford for pos part. Let's see what excuse he comes up with this Friday. Annoying! read more

I started having issues on my way home from work, I asked my boss who he would recommend? He told me Gil's always did him right and another shop that will remain unnamed. I called Gil's and they had room and gave me a price that sounded fair to me. I took it there Wednesday afternoon, I received a call with the problem and I let them go ahead with the repair. They called me the following Monday to come and pick it up. They did a great job, it shifts like it's supposed to and I'm happy with the turnaround time as well. Thanks team Gil's! read more

Update on my Chevy Van Had a mechanic look at my van, the conclusion was the oil filler tube was forced out because it was in the way, because it was forced out it could not be put back properly. The snorkel tube that connects the air filter to motor was removed, and was not replaced properly. The end result was a 171 code FUEL TOO LEAN. this is all caused by unproperly reinstalling said items. If Gils Transmission would have just taken a look at my vehicle this problem could have been resolved with no issues. See photos read more

My FMX transmission went out on my 1970 Mustang Mach 1. Gil's Transmission was the only place that really seemed to be willing to take it on. Just as a background, i had the transmission rebuilt in the mid 1990's by a Local Ford Dealership mechanic. It has always had a droning and vibration in it since. Just a few weeks ago, Gil's finished my transmission and it works perfectly with no droning or vibration. I had a slight fluid leak but they fixed that when i brought it back. They quoted me a price for the overhaul but actually did more hard parts replacement and had the converter rebuilt at no extra charged. I am exceedingly happy. read more

My car broke recently. For what it's worth, the car is a 2010 Honda Civic Si, purchased off the lot in Santa Ana. On the verge of being 13 years old, it's just shy of 335,000 miles. Mostly freeway miles! Longer story short, I couldn't easily put the car in first gear. Having had a clutch replaced some years back, I recognized the symptoms. At least this time I wasn't stranded off the 2 freeway in the Glassell Park neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles. I should thank, if briefly, Shane at Fruitvale Automotive. He was quick to tell me over the phone, that his shop doesn't do that sort of transmission work...and was gracious enough to point me over to Gil's Transmissions. The person who performed the first clutch replacement was a backyard mechanic. And kudos to him too. The car performed well after. For reasons I won't mention here, the customer service was unnecessarily awful. In regards to the services performed at Gil's Transmissions in November of 2022, all was great. Pricing was clear and transparent and relatively inexpensive. After all, on this car, it is a "transmission out" job. Customer service was good. The job itself took about two weeks or so, including weekends. Thankfully I was able to borrow my dad's truck. That said, I'd much rather someone take their time and have an excellent outcome, versus a quick, but poor turnaround. Who would want that?! Gil, i presume it was he, even showed me the old clutch and offered a suggestion or two on clutch preservation with slight shifting/driving modifications. As the old proverb goes, gray hair is definitely a sign of wisdom! To Gil and his staff, thank you again! I'll sing your praises till I end up in a pine box. read more

Very very honest! 2 mechanics told me I had transmission leaks. They checked it multiple times to reassure me. They didn't just say there was a problem and take my money. I will definitely return if/when I do need my transmission checked. Everyone was very nice and knowledgeable. read more

The most dishonest shop I've come across in years...start to finish! I'm 64, 4 ft 10, 99#, and handicapped...I had my bf at the time drop off my 04 f150 4x4 for transmission rebuild..3 weeks later!:( we pick it up..literally one week later, transmission codes, check engine light yada yada come on.. I have another male friend take it back for warranty work..Tom tells me " you don't own the truck, you bought it from Cliff!" I told him NO, truck is mine, always has been..Ling story short nothing was fixed and when my friend picked up truck TOM WRITES VOID, as the warranty isn't in her name:( I called BAR SACRAMENTO office and he was able to tell me that's not true, the warranty follows the owner ME! I called to see if they would have time to do a diagnostic on my car. Their phone etiquette is less than ideal. But in person the ladies in the office are extremely rude! We dropped the car off on a Tuesday morning, explained to them that we would need it back by Thursday afternoon if they couldn't get to it let us know. After two days of no information I called late morning to see if they had a chance to check it out, again speaking to the very rude lady. She explained that mine was next in line. It would still be a couple hours. After 3 1/2 since I called still no response from them. On my way home from work I stopped in to see if there was any progress. Because as we explained I would need it back(mind you this was for a diagnosis, I was understanding about the fact that if it needed major repairs I would bring it back another day). I was met with attitude by both women in the office. They seem bothered that I was even questioning if they had a time frame? Like the customer isn't allowed to asks questions after 3 days with no communication with them. The younger one of the two even mumbling "Jesus Christ what's the problem" when I was speaking to the other lady. I also asked if I could make an appointment next time, because God forbid a mother with busy kids may need an idea of how long her car may be in a shop. She rudely said that's not how we do it here. He may be a good mechanic but he needs someone with better customer service in the front. I will not be returning. read more

Thirty miles into the Chimney Peak Wilderness when my 1990 K5 developed transmission issues. Managed to limp out to Lake Isabella and call for help. I'm not from the Bakersfield area, but a former neighbor of mine drives a tow truck up there, and he recommended Gil's. Not surprisingly, the rebuilt transmission I had put in 14 years earlier was done. Gil's rebuilt it better than before in three days, and I was back on the road home to Long Beach. This is where it gets good. I ran into some issues with the new trans going up the Sepulveda pass (torque converter wouldn't lock). I called Gil's and Tom gave me some practical advice to get me home. He then told me to take it in and see what was wrong. I'm thinking I'm screwed. Turns out it was a minor repair, a wire had come loose. Diagnostics and fixing the issue came to $300. Believe it or not, Gil's said they were sorry for the trouble and would cover the repairs under warranty. These guys are old fashioned, they stand behind their work, and if I'm ever in need of a transmission guy up there, I wouldn't hesitate to give them my business. Even my shop in Long Beach was impressed, and they were shocked to find out the warranty was 2 years, 24k, unlike their 1 year 12k. Bottom line, failures happen with mechanical things. Even new parts are sometimes bad. Gil's will stand behind their work, they are honest, and they will make it right! And since I read it several other places, yes, Tom does have a very dry sense of humor. I do get it, and I like it. I'd imagine it comes from years of dealing with the public. He's not a bad guy, he is just a bit more down-to earth than most. read more

was referred over for an oil leak. charged a significant amount of money for it. I was told my car was fixed and ready to pick up. Brought it home and the oil leak was still there and was told to bring it back The same day. they then tried telling me after i had to bring it back that I had two leaks when in fact they messed up and repaired the wrong thing. took the car somewhere else and they did the correct repair. They will not refund so we are forced to take action now. So sad places like this can take advantage of people read more

I took my truck yesterday, thinking my transmission was leaking. Gil's mechanics found it was not my transmission it was my oil pressure sensor. And recommended I take to my mechanic. They did not charge me for the diagnostic and are Very very honest. I recommend Gils Transmission. read more

I got referred to Gil's from my diesel mechanic who is right down the street. Figured if Hoven recommended Gil's then he has to be honest and fair. My repair was seal on the transfer case but could have been more once they opened it up. Gladly it was just the seal and when they told me the total I was trying not smile to big. They worked with me on my drop off since I was coming off a night shift and had it ready well before I had to return to work. Hopefully I don't have to come back for anything but if I do I will know I'm getting quality work for a fair price. read more

I had an issue with my Dodge 4X4 transmission. Took it into Gil's for a check up. He serviced it & said I should service it more often. The whole thing, not just let the lube shop exchange the fluid in it. A short time later it broke so I took it back to them. They do good work, & don't waist time getting things done. The only problem is with the Owner. He has a VERY DRY sense of humor that I am sure most people either don't get or don't like. My truck has been fine now that they fixed it. Very slow service. They told me I'd have my car back the same week, but 3 weeks later they still had it. They never call to update you on the status of your car and they only seem to work on it if you keep calling and asking for updates. And when you do talk to them, they tell you they're doing something that day, but then the next time you talk, they tell you the same thing that day. So basically they don't work on your vehicle or do what they say they're doing. This is unacceptable. Poor customer service and they're not prompt to get your vehicle fixed and returned to you. Had my 350 transmission done at gills it wasn't right so he said bring it on back down they had my truck my daily for over 4 weeks I'd call him they say they were almost done call in again next week over and over and over then when they finally give it back to me their exact words were I don't know what we did to your transmission but we got you another one cuz all I needed was a center shaft support replaced got back in transmission that did not go in reverse or drive had it towed to them and they kept it for that over 4 weeks and when I finally got it back I didn't even get my transmission which was cast aluminum I have a transmission that is painted chipped greasy Orange did not get back my reinforced torque converter they even tried to keep my drain pan with my drain plug in it I had to go back down there and get that they took my starter and put in a starter that was not mine same with the alternator and my Optima battery was missing do not ever use gils transmission they're Crooks liars and thieves read more

I want to thank Gil a long time employee who works at Gil's Transmission. A very genuine person. He came out on Saturday to return my car and asked me how I was going to get my rental vehicle back since I was there alone. He offered to take me to the airport, stopped to put gas in the rental, waited for me to return the rental & then brought me back to Gil's Transmission to pick up my vehicle. This was not part of the service but this is a genuinely nice man!! My car runs great and the service was fast. Also, they are very honest. I found some money of mine just on the floor of the car when I was clearing things out. Honest and nice people. Recommend them and will return in future when in need. read more
