Gilbert's Provisions Wow! If you read my reviews, you know I am as honest a reviewer as I can be, I try to withhold a review until I have explored a menu and had time to reflect. However, there are times when after a few bites, you know you are eating something special, and it takes all your focus not to hurry the meal & start typing, trying to capture the flavor and the essence of the experience in the words, Gilbert's Provisions delivers that type of product. New establishments are a badge of honor to review. I feel lucky to be the first to take a go at Gilbert's Provisions. I have only noshed there twice and both times I had the Wagyū which is Japanese beef, literally: "Japanese cow" or 和牛 if you have fancy pants or read digital kanji. The Wagyū was presented in "Cheese steak" mode, although, I think it should be named the Guilt Free Cheese Steak, or maybe the Top Shelf Cheese Steak, while I quizzed the chef, he jokingly called it a Super Sloppy Joe! If I recollect correct, my meal, it went a little something like this: The first time, my Sammy had some sort of grilled & seasoned onion, they were bright red and sweet and delicious; There is a good chance they were fermented or quick pickled or some other food magic applied to them other than simple heat, fat and seasoning. You see, Gilbert's Provisions market niche is in the world of pickling and fermenting and they do it well. The meaty mixture in question was Wagyū and bacon ends from a recent Old Bay Bacon session. You see, Gilbert's Provisions regularly makes up slabs of Old Bay Bacon for those lucky enough to get some, and the Bacon flies out of the shop, so wake up early, the Cheese was an aerated Chèvre, the roll was tender and chewy, each bite better than the last, Scrumptious. My Sophomore event took place early the next day, I stopped in to see what was cooking and there was one Wagyū Sammy left, just sitting there staring at me... This particular lunch item had a twist from the previous day, Calamansi kosho swapped in for the onions, the chef also threw in, on the side what I think was pickled cabbage, and some more Calamansi kosho. This extra treat can best describe as a deconstructed kimchee or gimchi, sweet and sour, super spicy, crunchy awesomeness. The shop: Gilbert's Provisions is located behind a lady's boutique and is quiet & unassuming. The prepared food, selection of dry goods and housewares is top notch, a must stop for foodies or weekend cultural warriors seeking those elusive diamonds in the rough whilst poking around the Town of Berlin, also a welcome addition for resident hipsters & shorebillies -- catering is available. It's rare for me to go to the same place two days in a row, and now that I know the Wagyū is gone for awhile... You see, daily specials are the thing at Gilbert's Provisions, you never now what is coming up next, unless you visit facebook for the daily updates. I am looking towards tomorrow for my next snack, and planning boast and bravado for when I take house guests to experience the fine fare on a dime, at a grocery you would expect in Williamsburg, Brooklyn but will take note of in Berlin, MD. The dill pickles are the best east (or West!) of the Mississippi! Now all I have to figure out is how to get them shipped to California...

What a great resource for the local community and visitors alike!…read more This was my first visit this sweet little store to pick up steaks to grill for our last night in Cape May. I chose 2 nice strip steaks that proved delicious accompanied by mushrooms, broccoli and potatoes for oven baked fries - which i also got at the store. I needed some deli meat and the woman at the meat counter recommended their own ham, which is very tasty and definitely much better than what you get in a package at the grocery store. So far I've made sandwiches and chef salad that were a cut above the usual. It would be perfect if they offered just a bit more produce...but I understand there might not be enough demand to warrant it. The people were friendly and helpful and the customers all seemed to be regulars. A great resource for locals and visitors alike.

Came here at the recommendation of fellow Yelper Dee M. I'm so glad she did!…read more Gaiss Market is old school corner deli & grocery, the kind of place that used to be everywhere, until huge supermarkets came along. For me it was partially a trip down memory lane. The market is small, cluttered, with a decent mix of dry goods, cold, packaged meats snd fresh veggies. The deli/meat counter is the star, with super fresh, high quality meats. I orders the supreme Italian hoagie. It was excellent. Fresh tomatoes full of flavor, great roll, generous quantities of meats. I also picked up some packaged goods, including Gaiss' own pork roll, vacuum packed and "award winning". It's delicious, as is their vacuum packed bacon which is cut at a perfect thickness. We liked them both so much I've got orders to stock up next time I'm down there. Nice people, it's now a bring your own bags store - local ordinance. Nothing is cheap, the quality makes it worth the higher price. Parking - pull up spots around the building. Definitely will be back soon.
