If you're a foodie in London you've heard of Hawker House, Street Feast, Model Market and you've…read moreprobably gone... Bringing great food companies / stalls together, great bars with interesting drinks all in a custom made venue... Sounds fantastic... But I have to say that the shine really has faded. I went to the Oktoberfest after winning tickets (although it was so crowded, we had a beer and left without tasting the food), and then the opening night after winning tickets with Time Out, It's on my doorstep, so I was pretty excited...However whilst this meant we got few free drinks (and the frontier beer was amazing!), this didn't sway me. Okay if you're going to a nice restaurant you pay for good food and the vibe - but this is a 'street feast', of small vendors... and frankly while the food is very adventurous... street food shouldn't be the same price as restaurant food... I find it too expensive - especially considering you'll need to pay to enter (£3) after 7pm - and a touch pretentious. We tried: Bob's Lobster's Cheese and Lobster - this came as a small sandwich and all for £10. I really disliked the cheap American cheese they used. Spit and Roast £12 for steak (that was chewy and we couldn't cut with the plastic knives they gave us), fries (quite soggy) and bone marrow. Milk and Honey Mercury Bar for a £9 cocktail that was a bit haphazard (the barman admitted he had never made it before, and whilst I'd like to give him the benefit for this, shouldn't he know what he's making rather than reading it off of a card?) The bar was also really sticky and they practically ignored us when we wanted to pay. The only place I liked was the whisky bar - but then I love whisky so that explains that. I used to be a massive fan, but I think it's lost a lot of its charm of being great food and drink and whilst it's a great concept, I don't think I'll be a regular.

Thankfully they had the traditional sign of a decent bit of street food - a large queue. Wisdom of crowds and all that. It was well organised - you queue on one side, order the wrap and pay (I opted for the lamb and paid an extra pound for halloumi as well). Then you get given a little ticket and enter the next queue for collection. In that time, the pizza/wrap is moved over to the right side and heated up on a large hot plate. Quite how the chap keeps track of which order is which I'll never know, but it's an impressive system. Toppings are pretty much the norm if you've ever had a Turkish kebab of any type, but the one thing I really liked was that they chopped the cucumber and tomato up and mixed them together - so it was like you got a Greek salad of sorts added to the wrap. So mine came to £7 including the halloumi, which for street food isn't a bad deal. It's big but I found that it wasn't that filling - although that could have been my subconscious demanding that I go and get a second one because it was really delicious. The bread/base was light and airy, the salad was crisp and gave a good variety of texture next to the cheese. Really, really good and very much reminded me of my time in Istanbul last year - it certain compares quite admirably with the good food I ate out there.

However, when they came to UCL, I made a beeline to their stand in order to give them a try. The concept is simple: Bill or Beak? Bill is a shredded duck sandwich with a Vietnamese twist, and Beak is grilled chicken caesar sandwich (or salad). Part of me wanted to order both, but since it was for lunch, I opted for one sandwich: Bill. The sandwich was absolutely glorious! The duck was really tasty and the Vietnamese dressing on it really upped the flavor profile. The fresh herbs were a wonder. The crunchy fried shallots really added depth to the sandwich as well. I found myself devouring it really quickly. It was a bit messy but definitely enjoyable. I'd be really tempted to see if the Bird was just as good, but it'll be hard for me to not keep coming back for the Beak.

I lament the lack of good sandwich offerings in London regularly. In a city where so many of the…read moresandwiches are pre-made (or worse, pre-FILLED) I often crave the simple goodness of a sandwich that doesn't come into being until I order it. Today I arrived at Broadway Market for a long overdue catch up with a friend who lives nearby. "Vietnamese sandwiches?" I asked (though it may have come off sounding a bit more like a command if I'm honest.) "Never had one," came her answer though she indicated she was game. We wandered around crowded Broadway Market (which was absolutely heaving with people as the sun was out) until she spotted the queue at Bánhmí11. We fell in immediately behind a guy who talked about his off menu order (he takes the Quad Meat Special: sans the pate and with only the BBQ pork and roast pork.) I opted for the Cha Cha Chicken and whilst I realise that coconut and lemongrass marinated chicken is a bit of a departure from the traditional banh mi I couldn't resist. One bite in I was certain I'd chosen well. The toasted baguette held up well and the chicken was awash in complex flavours. My friend got the BBQ Squared and judging from the bite I snagged off her, that one was a winner too. At just £4 a sandwich, these babies were a steal (mine left me satiated through to dinner!) Now that I've discovered the 55 bus takes me direct to Broadway Market I know where I'll be headed on Saturdays!

Home-cured roast pork, pickled carrots, daikon radish, cucumber, coriander, red chilli, home-made hot sauce... it's all there. And it's all good. 2. Made to order goodness, none of this stale sitting sandwiches trend that London has going on all over the place. 3. They are extremely internet savvy, yet they don't have a brick and mortar shop. That's unexpected... and awesome. 4. On their website, they say: "You shout: Bánhmì11.... I am coming to eat you!" And that's funny. 5. They had a seasonal special called Op La Di, Op La Da...(It was incredible and involved steak in a soy and sake marinade, served with an organic sunny side up egg.) 6. ...and they wrote this poem to go with it: "Op La Di, Op La Da... Lala how the life goes on! Lala come before it's all gone!!" C'mon. You know that's amazing. It's so wrong it's right. 7. It's dirt cheap... for London. 8. Their card has a tube sign with a baguette going through it that says "Fill The Gap." Well played. 9.The ladies that run the cart are Hanoians and they just missed Bánh Mí so much they decided to stop whining about it (cough... Mexican food wingers... cough) and actually do something about it. 10. They are so friendly and excited to see you at the market, it kinda hurts. 11. They don't Londonize their food -- traditional liver paté is still high on the menu and the hot sauce is actually HOT! It's not complicated, it's not gourmet, yet it's still delicious in every way. Why mess with perfection?
