The Giant Eagle on Murray ave, East end of New Castle, PA. It's clean, conveniently located, and although a bit smaller (JUST a bit...) than the average Giant Eagle, it has all of the cool stuff. Nice deli, a bakery (which is actually an inexpensive spot to get stuff like Danish) and all the aisles for getting in your steps on a crappy Winter (or hot Summer) day. Really I like Giant Eagle, I just avoid the fruit & veg (expensive) and bread (Schwebels Italiano for $4.75!?!) aisles. Not even worth walking down them. Just stick with sale items, items you get cheap because of the Giant Eagle card, and the meat dept. but only for sale and items getting marked down because the sell by date is getting close. The employees are always friendly, and helpful. The store is well stocked, except for Asian food items which is pretty crappy. Two kinds of soy sauce? Seriously? Overall, this Giant Eagle gets four of five stars. Oh, and a s###-ton of different brands and flavors of ice cream. I do like that. read more

Cute little giant convenient store on Murray Avenue called Giant Eagle. I stayed at an Airbnb in Squirrel Hill and needed some bottled water. I walked here not knowing what time it closes. I asked the security guard. Oh shoot. I got 5 minutes to shop. The store has a logical layout. I found what I wanted in a minute and rushed to check out. The cashier saw me as I was new to the area. He offered his loyalty card for my water. Nice guy. I got it at a discount. But somehow, I got charged for 10 cents more. I swore I hit I got my own bag. Oh well. Time was running out. The worst of the worst! Went in to pick up meds for my 92 year old Father In-law. Asked two store employees for assistance, after waiting for a lull in the personal conversation that they were having. They were beyond rude and annoyed that the reason that they are employed dared bother them on work time! I'm from the area, but was home for the holidays. Have to point out, I live in Florida and Publix employees are always courteous, polite and helpful. Get it together with your rude employees!! I went to the Squirrel Hill Giant Eagle's pharmacy to get my Covid booster, and my flu shot today. The pharmacist, John, was incredibly kind over the phone when I called. I'm a big baby when it comes to getting shots, but the pharmacist was so gentle that I barely felt the two shots! He must be some kind of magician because those were the most pain-free vaccines I've ever gotten. And Giant Eagle gives you a $5 discount on a future purchase for each vaccine you get from them; they link it to your advantage card. From now on, I will be getting all my vaccines at the Squirrel Hill Giant Eagle pharmacy. Everyone at the pharmacy was wonderful, and the staff at the store itself is always helpful and friendly. It was a very positive experience. However, people should be aware that this location is much smaller than many of the other Giant Eagle locations in the Pittsburgh area, therefore it can't provide the same variety and selection of food products. But I feel they do an excellent job of utilizing the space they have, and it's a good place to shop for staple food items, or to run in to quickly grab something. But for larger grocery orders, and/or for a larger selection of organic food, you'll probably want to go elsewhere. I'm giving 5 stars because I love their pharmacy, and I think they do a great job of making the best of the smaller space they have. read more

Since the majority of my friends live near this part of Pittsburgh, I'm a semi-regular shopper at this Giant Eagle. It's a great place to grab desserts for a get-together, ingredients for a potluck, etc. It's definitely not as big as the Market Districts, but the essentials are always available here when I need them. Thank goodness they have their own parking lot, though! Parking in Squirrel Hill can get tricky depending on the time and day of the week, so that guarantee is great. Again, I don't really shop here for a full list of groceries - I'm typically in and out in 10 minutes with a small basket of stuff. It helps that the things I tend to pick up aren't things that are likely to move around in the store itself. The fruits and vegetables, the bakery (which is kosher), the deli - very unlikely to migrate unless the whole store is overhauled. This is admittedly a relief since I don't particularly enjoy strolling up and down the aisles in stores and checking the shelves for things; plus, the aisles here are very maze-like. Not designed for a linear shopping experience at all. Checkout does tend to get cramped no matter what due to the size of the store; I've been lucky and haven't visited during peak hours for a while, but even when the number of people in the store is relatively low, there just isn't a ton of room for folks to line up. It's common for shoppers to have trouble pushing a cart through the lines of people waiting to pay, since the lines quickly stretch back into the aisles and block them off. This is the biggest factor in my decision to make this a 2-star review (instead of a 3-star one). If you opt to shop elsewhere, based on the other reviews, you'll be in good company. I've found that it's possible to run in and out for a few basics without difficulty, but for a bigger grocery haul, don't be afraid to travel elsewhere if you want to/can do so. read more

So I can objectively say that theirr produce is in the best, and their prices are too high for my liking. My review is on the people from Inspire hanging out in front of Giant eagle trying to sell you a cheaper Electric provider. They lie from the start. I cant believe Giant Eagle is advocating this venture. One of the few giant Eagles that are open till midnight. There's both free parking in the back and street parking at the front. It's not the biggest giant eagle in the city and it's slightly smaller than the one in greenfield but it has a little bit of everything. There's usually only about 2 cashiers and most customers usually use the self check out. I really like their chicken pot pie :) it's hot and freshly made for just under $5 :) they have a kosher and asian section as well. read more

Twice I had to leave the seafood counter because there was no service. Once the person was on break. I was turned away and told to return in 15 minutes; the second time the person was talking for a very long time on the phone. Both times customers walked away from the seafood counter. The odd part is that two workers were right next to the seafood counter working the deli and they were just chatting. There were no customers. This seafood counter needs to be better managed. read more

Not my usual Giant Eagle but I was in the area dining and seeing a movie. We had parked on the street and happened to need a few items from the grocery so stopped in here just a few steps away from our car. Found everything we needed and the cashier line was small and service fast enough. What I thought was cool was how they have a brake system so you can't take carts off premises. The cart's brake locks when crossing the boundary. We asked the cart patrol to unlock the brake so we could take to our car parked on the street, which they were kind and obliged. Some say the true measure of an adult is when you actually start to enjoy running errands. Well I generally enjoy grocery shopping, but not at this giant eagle. It's so close to my house which is why I shop here, but every time I shop here, I regret it. The store is small, has a terrible selection of items, is always crowded, and never has good sales. Literally the only thing I like about it, is that it has a kosher bakery. I generally just don't have good experiences here and I will explain some below. I went shopping to grab some few essential item: yogurt, cheese, milk and of course ended up getting a lot more impulse buys. I get up to the cash register and the lady who was working was cold and unwelcoming. Looked like she really didn't want to be there. Okay fine whatever. I checkout, pay, and go home. I start to unpack my groceries and realize my cheese, yogurt, and some other things were missing. What the heck. The lady was the one who packed my groceries. I called the store, got transferred amongst multiple people and finally they told me they found the bag and someone put it in the fridge. So I went all the way back to the store and up to the same lady at the cash register. She literally just ignored me. I tried to say excuse me, still ignored me. Then she walked away from her cash register, walked right past me and still ignored me. Finally I just went to find someone else because clearly she was useless. A younger gentleman helped me find my bag. Reason I didn't get the bag, because she packed it and never put it up on the conveyor belt. Next: I needed a new connect card. Waited in a long line of people and finally bought one. Was told it would take 24-72 hours to load into the online system, okay no problem. I tried it everyday for a week. Kept saying it was invalid. Tried calling connect card but they said I had to go back to the store. Brought the receipt and the card. The guy at the register said oh the reason it didn't work was because the person never actually activated the card when they gave it to you. Are you kidding? I wasted all this time and it was all because they didn't activate it. Those are the two big incidents but there have been tons of other small things. I really just need to travel the extra 1.5 miles and go to the one in east liberty. read more

Argh, you dirty little cramped place you. If you wasn't for your late hours (until 1-ish) and proximity to where I live, I wouldn't frequent you. I'm so confused when I shop here. Do you remember that kid's game show "Fun House?" It's kind of like walking into that. Having to look for a clue as to where to find the item you want/need. I swear I walked around for 15 minutes once looking for the bread aisle only to discover that the bread was on the ends of several aisles (your clue) and you had to figure out which endcap you needed for the correct bread. Going later at night makes it hard to shop, especially since they are in full swing with restocking the shelves. (yet another piece to that fun house puzzle) Don't go for big orders ever here, be sure to have a small list and avoid grabbing a cart, you'll just add to the congestion. Not a fan. Outdated. I can't find basic items, but if you're Jewish and need whatever it is that you need (not being mean I just have no idea) then this place is for you. There is not much positive to say about this place. From the silly name of this chain to the panhandlers outside the store to the expensive prices of their produce, GE is complete trash. The only reason I shop here is for convenience; once I get a car, I will be frequenting places like the Strip District much more. The produce is overpriced. $5 a pound for cherries or snap peas is plain robbery; I understand that they are more "exotic," but that is just ridiculous. Their selection is also very limited as supermarkets go; stop by the GE in the Market District and you'll notice the difference. Finally, the quality ranges from fresh to disgusting; I've seen fruit flies over their "new crop" of peaches. As other reviewers noted, they are always understaffed. Come here late at night and you'll be stuck in one of two long lines of 10 people each. I don't understand why they close off the self-checkout lines after a certain time. They would be better off taking one of their bagging boys and staffing him at the self-checkout counters. read more

Yuck, yuck ,yuck!!! I used to come to this one because it was the closet store near me. It was always such a stressful experience. It was always super busy, really cramped, the cashiers talk to each other about their lives and ect while you're in line and they haven't even looked at you but are scanning your items. They always had an attitude. The floor always looked like it had gone months with out being washed, and a few times I had almost bought something and a box was busted but it was still on the shelf. Clearly the people that work there don't care about the store. The worst part is that it's smelly. It smells like b.o. when you walk in, mixed with smelly gym bag and rotten meat. I have been going to this GE for my whole life, and believe me, before they remodeled it, it sucked much more. Still, there are problems. For instance, There are never enough employees working at one time. I have NEVER seen all the lanes open. For a market district that has a million lanes, it's understandable to have 3-4 closed lanes when it is slow. Fine. The Squirrel Hill Eagle sees lane closings, often leaving only 2 available (not including self-checkout). Ah, but when you do get to a register you can forget about the happy greeting or any greeting at all. I have been told to hurry up by bad-mouthed cashiers who want to go on break. Thought there are a couple great managers (for those that know Sarah who has been there forever), but the rest are surly, unkempt, mean people. The stock...what stock? Though their selection on nonperishable is usually fine, you can forget about freshness anywhere but the deli (nice group at the deli). Fish is NOT, I repeat, not fresh. Mold can be found on almost everything in the produce department. I am meat connoisseur and even their top quality beef is a joke (try Fillet Mignon that has the diameter of a silver dollar with heavy marbling). The bakery is above average. But...damn is it convenient!! For many older adults and students without cars it is very hard to complain about much more. It's there for good. read more

As I've gotten frail in my old age, and they are so close by, it is often easier to walk the half block for stale bread and a morsel of greying meat that costs $20 than it is to walk anywhere else. Seeing as Giant Eagle is run by families from Fox Chapel, I have always had a feeling that they placed this dirty, understocked, apathetic and understaffed, shameful disgrace of a grocery store in Squirrel Hill as a 'screw you' to our neighborhood. This place is generally terrible. Overcrowded, understaffed. The self check out lanes shut down early. The grocery store is organized in the most counter intuitive way possible. There are always pan handlers asking for money standing or sitting directly outside of the doors. The produce is usually terrible. I gave Giant Eagle an extra star for convenience. This location is close to my house and it has it's own parking lot. They're open late and I'm a lazy shopper so that fits my schedule. But if you go late they are super understaffed and the self check out is closed so you will probably have to wait anyway. read more

I have lived in five different states and never had to rely on such a terrible grocery store chain. Giant Eagle is intensely expensive compared to other markets and the customer service is always abysmal. After being glared for being so inconsiderate as to want to pay for my purchases every time I use a human-staffed checkout lane, I gave up and will now use the self checkout even if the line is four deep and there are immediately available checkers. The fact that the chain has a de facto monopoly is the only thing that permits such unpleasant experiences to be the standard here. This is consistently the worst Giant Eagle around. Thankfully, I live about equidistant between it and the Greenfield one, which is leaps and bounds above (and still not that great, which says a lot, lol). The aisles are tiny, and there are often people backed into them while waiting in line at the register, as there are NEVER enough cashiers. I have seen lines of 10+ people here at 11:30 at night. They also have a limited selection of food, since they are such a small store. The produce is usually abysmal (rotten grapes FTW), and the bread selection is cleaned out a good portion of the time. The pros: the deli staff is really nice, as they have a ton of patience in dealing with elderly customers who want to sample everything before they buy it (and I am usually stuck in line behind those people...). They have a Kosher bakery with some delicious breads and also homemade garlic butter. And, they're the only place in Squirrel Hill on Murray that has a parking lot (and also on the bus line if you don't drive). But that's where it stops. I'm just grateful that there is a nice, big, well-stocked GE across McKnight Road from my gym. This GE is there for emergencies only in my mind. read more

I was coming to this giant eagle fairly regularly because of the convenient hours and because it is within walking distance for me. Then one night my husband came back from there with bread that had mold (only visible when opened) and iced tea that was 10 days past expiration. I returned to the store the next day, more than happy to even just exchange the items, and they were extremely rude at the customer service desk. They accused me of not being a "regular custoner" there because I do not have an advantage card. Never once did they tell me sorry for the inconvenience and I had bronchitis that day and was so sick and miserable. I had to lecture their staff about what good customer service is. I won't be back there. No matter how far I have to go or how convenient it would be to drop in there, they won't see me again! read more

I prefer going to a market district giant eagle opposed to this one. They have a huge problem with stocking certain items and they are severely understaffed - meaning you are always standing in a line! The pharmacy isn't that friendly either. I wanted to move my prescription to Rite-Aid down the street (which has a 24 hours) and they renewed my prescription with my doctor without even asking me! So now I'm stuck. It is a great place for me to quickly pick up some items since I live across the street, but if it weren't for that I would never come! read more

Its good to have it around and a good thing about it is the longer working hours but don't expect so much from them. Not as organized as the one on center. Many times you may not fijd obvious things and they may have so few and low quality of fruits later at night that you may have wished you had druven to the further one. This is the Giant Eagle in Greenfield. It is a smaller store but does have a pharmacy and deli. It lacks many of the amenities of a larger Giant Eagle but it is convenient to Greenfield and Squirrel Hill with far less parking hassles than the Squirrel Hill GE. read more

I've been going to this giant eagle since i was a kid. there's no excuse for the company not to improve the parking and ease of navigation of this location given what i can only imagine is its tremendous profitability. in fact, the only reason it is so profitable is due to its great location and the neighborhood. the store is dirty, cramped and can't compete with other giant eagles, the strip, whole foods, trader joe's etc. for variety and freshness. the employees are totally useless, as is the manager who works nights. avoid. read more

I know it's bratty to move to a new town and complain about your neighborhood store, but I am not a fan of this Giant Eagle. I mean, A+ for convenience (two blocks from my apartment), but that's nearly all it gets points for. It's so small! Quite expensive, I noticed, and the "Giant Eagle card" doesn't end up saving you much money anyway. I think we'll try to only go here for brand items (Cheerios, etc) but get produce/meat/seafood/everything else in the Strip District. I have been to this store a few times and honestly, there are much worse examples of Giant Eagle (North Side to name 1 specifically, and Lawrenceville which shut down). There are positives to this store such as the service and it does carry a decent selection of products. It also is open 24 hours, which is 1 of the few in the city that is. I will say the parking can be tight during the day and the store itself is among GE's smallest. That means that it can be pretty cramped in there. All in all, not a bad store. However, with the neighborhood, a redo such as what was done to Market District on Centre Ave by expanding the store and moving parking underground could be a benefit to Squirrel Hill. Honestly, that neighborhood deserves a bigger and even better store. read more

One of these days I want to get the manager of the store and their produce manager and take a walk through the produce section and point out all the disgusting, rotted food they have there. It seems this store is NEVER clean, NEVER staffed right, and the panhandlers not only around the store, but INSIDE the store approaching you as you shop. I told the cashier once about that and he just shrugged and said "they have their rights too, you know." Well, I have the right to just not shop in this store ever again.
